  • I wish I could find this on DVD, this is one of the greatest concert videos ever next to Pink Floyd's Delicate Sounds of Thunder.

  • Wow !!!! Actual LIVE musicians, playing REAL, not "virtual" instruments !!!!! What a novel concept !!!!!!!!!!! Thanks so much for this post !!!!!!!! It's always great to hear that drum track underneath Tony's legato melody of "Cinema Show", and I can't help but smile whenever I hear "Colony of Slippermen" !!! :-)

    Peace:-)

  • I totally forgot about the "In That Quiet Earth" segment in this medley...love it! Thanks for posting this!

  • Thanks for posting this so much Genesis is deleted or a link to some other web page where I ain't goin !

  • This medley is sooooo sooooo sooooo good! I used to have this show on VHS and wore it out completely. Thanks for posting! Thank you thank you thank you!

  • You are very welcome!!

  • THANK YOU SOO MUCH! :)

  • sober8 thanks so much for posting this i've been looking for this thanks.

  • you are very welcome

  • phil just fuckin kicks asre on here man cool as fuck.............

  • spine tingling stuff from the best rock group by far FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is an absolutely incredible video! A far superior product compared to the original versions. I can remember stumbling upon this on MTV and being completely floored at the musicianship. The rest of the video is good, but this part is truly memorable! Thanks for making it available to us.

  • I was hoping he Mama Tour would be in the new Live DVD box set...Oh well :o(

  • it is

  • I don't like the sound Banks uses for cinema show at all...three sides is much better

  • I'm assuming you the first part that he played on the Synclavier. Most of it is played with the Arp Quadra and is the same keyboard and sound he used on the Three Sides Live Tour.

  • Which Genesis video is this from?

    The actual one!

  • Comment removed

  • Is that a Steinberger M-Series MR is using? I was dating them much later.

  • dont pretend to know about gutars you fucking muppet

  • It's a doublenecked Strata.

Strata were one of the first companies to make headless guitars. Sadly, there is very little information on the web about Strata :(

  • Genesis were and still are an amazing band! Incredible performance from the consummate musicians.

    Shame they aren't still together....

  • wow, in this tour they were pratically perfect!!!!

  • Where's the choir in Cinema Show? I couldn't hear it.

This was the one tour when Tony Banks sat in the middle - it still looks odd now.

  • Why does it "still" look odd now?

I did not look odd then, it does not look odd now. It must be a matter of opinion.

Strange way to see things: Odd?

Take a look in the mirror; now thats odd!

  • I just meant because that's the only time it happened. No need to start making personal remarks.

  • i was so psyched untill ..in tha quiet earth.

that is one of my fav. genesis songs, and they start ahlf way through. so disheartening. ah well.

  • iv'e got this on an old VHS original and its great but sound and pic a bit toss from playin it to fuckin death.................

  • Moog Bass Pedal!!!!!! YEsssss!

  • I saw these guys on every tour from Trick of the Tail thru Mama sometimes multiple dates, then I skipped a couple because I didn't like I Can't Dance and all that crap, But I saw thrie last tour I think 2007???,

And I have to say that the band is tighter than ever althought Collins' voice is going out.

  • it is a great melody. Re what keyboard tony is playing, life is far to short to be so bloody anal! It sounds good end of...

  • Comment removed

  • Quite tight but missing the blast of the mellotron. The Korg vocoder just didn't get it.

  • The Korg Vocoder was not used on this tour. The Melotron sound was duplicated with the E-mu Emulator and is clearly visible in the video.

  • Yiptie doo...it cleary sounds not as good as the mellotron.. I've said this that it was possibly E-mu on another clip. Congratu-fucking-lations...

  • You were wrong, admit it. No reason to get all pissy.

  • My point is, like the one on the top of your head, is that I prefer analog Tony compared to the harsh, cold sound of the 80, 90s.

  • On that, we agree! Even though the Arp Quadra was one of the best sounding keyboards Banks used and he used that well into the 80's.

  • I agree - artistically. But I suppose the mid-1980'ies just weren't an era where organs and Rhodes fared well. Imagine Invisible Touch with all-analogue synthesizers! What would Bateman have said! ;-)

  • "Just Dont stare at it! Eat it!"

He'd would probably be talking to those two sluts about Peter Gabriel!!!

  • Don't you love it when the Prog Heads get proved wrong over and over again!!!!

  • @ray5401 IMO Genesis are a band who have written together, played together and performed together. Calling All Stations aside, they've always produced great music that I could listen to forever and a day :o)

  • spine tingling superb at there best what i would give to have been there for that.....

  • 3:55 BAM-BAM! BAM-BAM!

  • This is my favorite Cage Medley

I also like the one from '86 that ends with Supper's Ready

  • Banks rules, Collins smokes and check out Rutherford's base @ 5:22. Genesis is #1, all others are #2 or lower.

  • so what tour is this? Abacab?

  • The Mama tour. The tour for the album that had Mama on it,Illegal ALien, Home By The Sea among others

  • This is my favorite version of the Cage Medley.

Tony's incredible keyboards and Phil using his full arsenal. Love how Mike uses the double neck. I had seats close to the stage last year and loved how he switched from rhythym guitar to bass and back throughout the song. Check out the guitar work at 1:07then to bass in 2:07.

    Thanks for posting S8

  • this is such a gr8 track

    so emotional and atmospheric

i fell in love with genesis when i was 16 am 34 now

    best band ever

  • was at this concert (or maybe one of the other nights) at NEC great light show fantastic performance .wonder will this ever come out on dvd my old vhs is in pretty bad shape heres hoping

  • Saw this and bought drums.. Young and stupid. For young drmmrs whor starting.. Neil Peart or Chad Wackermann or Steve Gadd.. Also, it's amazing how good you get when u have other players, especially a bassist who knows some shit.

  • I started playing guitar in 1986 because it was always the "cool" instrument to play; I'd been a fan of rock music since 1984. My mom started trying to get me playing piano and I was very turned off to the idea. Then, I saw this on KABC-TV Channel 7 in Los Angeles and immediately and completely reversed my attitude toward keyboards. Rush and Genesis really knew how to put keyboards and guitars together into some of the finest progressive rock heard in the late 70s and early 80s.

  • He used pearl up until 88. Iv got a video with him and chet mcrechan and thats 88 and hes useing sonor with sabian

  • tony Banks was so under-rated as a keyboardist. Next to Keith Emerson, Tony is the best I have ever seen live.

  • I used to be a Keith Emerson fan, also. But Tony Banks has so much more going for him with song writing, composing, etc. Someone made the comment once that Emerson was keyboards mixed with crank.

  • Tell me about it. I love reading best keyboardist polls that have Geddy Lee and Eddie VanHalen rated above Banks. Talk about clueless. Banks should always be in the top 3 with Rick Wakeman and Emmerson.

  • Why was the Cage-medley in 2007 not as powerful as in 1981??

  • they are a lot older

  • Yeah, but not better.

  • What's your point? This isn't 1981 anyway, it's 84.

  • This is the only time I've seen this stage set up with Banks in the middle. All other live performances I've seen he has been stage left. Considering his great dislike of live performing, (not playing live, just his stage presence), ths is quite a departure.

  • Nice to see this back up on youtube.

  • THE best In The Cage medley

  • To me, there's no greater joy than getting to watch Phil Collins get behind a drum kit :-D

  • Holy shit! This ROCKS!!!

  • the best part me was "In That Quiet Earth", great theme and give Tony Banks all the credit in this whole medley. He stuck out the most. ROCK ON, GENESIS!!!! You STILL got it!!!!

  • Banks writes much of Genesis music. Its no wonder its keyboard centric.

  • great stuff - the decsion to lump all of the old stuff together like this was inspired

  • Tony Banks looks like a computer programmer but give him a set of keyboards and he is God, Genesis, best band in the world, ever, ever, tying to think here, no I'm right, EVER !

  • That's what I like about Banks. He's not a no-talent showboat like many musicians. He may not have much stage presence, but his playing is the best.

  • What drum kit is Phil playing?

  • Not too sure, but it certainly is nice

  • I think Phil is using a Premier or a Gretsch kit and Chester might be using either a Premier or Sonor.

  • Chester's playing Pearl. He didn't play the Sonor stuff until the 90's.

  • Now with DW like everone else!!!!!!!

  • Premier with 22" bass drum.

  • that's fantastic!

with this video I fell in love with genesis..it gives me every time the same great emotion just as if it's the first time I watch it!

  • Gotta love the Cinema Show, and the clip from Slippermen! Nice to see no Slipperman costume, those things are freaky!

    -Joe

  • Yeah.. Visual effects, okay, but only lights and some animations.. not those stage performances which peter prefered to do.

  • The lighting rig used in this tour was using state of the art equipement that had only come out 2yrs previous, Genesis were providing light shows unlike anyone else at the time.

  • They were one of the first acts to use the vari-lite system. They were very advanced for their time and the had to be operated by a technician sent from the company.

  • I tought the vari-lights were fist used at the invisible touch tour, ( Dvd live at wembley.. Phil tells about it in an interview )

  • According to Wikipedia, the made their debut with Genesis on the Abacab tour.

"A prototype was built and demonstrated in London to the British band Genesis (band) who decided to invest in developing a system for one of their tours. The engineers returned to the USA and developed the VARI*LITE® Series 100™ system. The Series 100™ system made it's debut on the Genesis (band) "Abacab" tour on September 25, 1981 in Barcelona Spain with 50 VL1™ luminaires and a custom built console"

  • well, guess you were right then, my bad ;) thanks anyway!!

  • you are correct. I remember seeing those lights and I'm like "what the hell kind of lights are these guys using now?"

  • By far their best medley!

  • It might have been better to go straight into afterglow after Quiet Earth....

  • Phil and Chester are LOCKED IN. I saw them in 07 and it was like 15 years never happened

  • I'm telling you, Phil is ruling the rhythm with his drum kit!! Between him and Chester, we've only dreamed of wonders so very charming and fruitful as to indulge in the magnificence of such drummers that are the equivalent of two men who has a lifelong fetish!

I must complement! Tony has special fingers which can roll notes at speeds a bit dazzling for a regular pianist.

    Mike is a great guitarist.

  • No, Mike sucks at the guitar. He's a bass player.

  • He is obviously one of my favorite bass players of all time. Very creative on his instrument. But he's not a bad guitarist though.

  • Much prefer the harder guitar part on "In that Quiet Earth". It was drowned out by Banks' keyboards on the album version.

  • Obviously he played bass on the records, I mean in public's eye he only played guitar.

  • Goosebumps...

  • Sorry for my ignorance but I don't know the meaning of "underated". You'll see that my mother tongue is not Inglish but going to the point, I want to know its meaning. I can't find that word in the dictonary. Thanks!

  • Basically it means that someone is better at something than he/she gets credit for. So in the case of Mike, he is a terrific bass player but is not someone who is credited for it. Probably because during Genesis' most famous period he pretty much only played the guitar, especially in videos and TV appearances.

  • I agree with spikejrt concerning how Mike is just KILLING Slippermen, and agree also that he is underated as a bass player. Phil Mike and Tony ALL kill on this clip. Tony always slays Cinema Show, fingers everywhere. Thanks for posting this. Just Great!

  • Look at Mike's fingers go in Slipperman! He is a much underated bass player...

  • This is, as usual, a par excellence performance but not quiet as sharp or as happening as the Three sides medley IMHO.

  • Great i look after this part of the show for a moment ago.

    Thanks a lot.

  • Thank you sober 8 for posting. I recorded this concert one evening as it was played on a local radio station over 20 years ago. I don't play the cassette that often for fear of ruining it. It was such a gas to find this on line...you made my day! This is one of the finest passages of live misic when combined with The Cage just before it and Afterglow endiing the concert. FANTASTIC!!

  • You're welcome. It's nice to see somebody just leave a compliment and not compare the Gabriel era with the Collins era. Both eras are good.

  • I concur (Re: The Awesomeness of this Medley). While I prefer Phil as a vocalist, the music from the Peter era is awesome, like the In the Cage Medley/The Lamb, among other things! Gotta love Mike on the double-necked guitar and Tony's fingers of silver! And of course, Chester and Daryl! Thanks for sharing, do you have "Afterglow"? I always think of the In the Cage Medley as a journey, probably because I saw them do it on this recent tour with "Duke's Travels."

  • I just downloaded a bit torrent from that tour.

    Awesome show!!

  • I agree that goin into "in that quiet earth" was a great choice. Ya never really hear them do that on any concert footage in this track. Just awesome!!!!!!

  • THANK YOU for posting this!

Love this version of Cinema Show into "In that Quiet Earth" from this tour.

    All Tony Banks synth, fantastic!

  • Thank you so much for posting this second part!
