I'm disappointed. I loved the Black Swan, with it's attention to detail and work that went into the production (I work in a studio myself so I think about more criteria than most) Black Swan is still a piece of cinematic art that embraces the directorial/visual/storytelling style that makes us love Perfect Blue and other animes so much. Like the LionKing/Kimba thing, Aronovsky should have said the film was a homage to Perfect Blue and there would have been no shame, but a display of good taste.
aronosky little son of a botch. "buy the rights" it seems to be the perfect excuse for the lack of imagination and creativity in hollywood. and he even said black swan is not related with perfect blue? lol. Get inspired by the work of someone else is one thing, but rip off someone else's work is just not right, no matter if you buy it
Aronofsky is a dumbass. I used to like him for movies such as Requiem For A Dream but he disgusted me with his idiotic copy of Perfect Blue. Shame on you, Aronofsky; RIP Satoshi Kon ... and what about Paprika - Inception ... Hollywood really sucks.
Dude great job with the trailer. I also found Black Swan to be incredibly similar to Perfect Blue, even more so after I found out that Arronofsky bought the rights to the anime so he could replicate a scene shot for shot for his movie Requiem for a Dream. Personally I think Blue is far superior to Black Swan
@cesaraeon I perosnally think requiem was better then perfect blue. Not to mention to this day requiem is considered one of the most depressing films of all time. I felt like gagging after watching it. And aranofski bought the rights, so he could use the bathtub scene.
Before "The Matrix", there was "Ghost in the Shell". Before "Inception", there was "Paprika". Before "Black Swan", there was "Perfect Blue". Anime rules!!!!
@ecco1983 Ghost In The Shell doesn't have as much in common as Grant Morrison's comic, "The Invinsibles" does to it. Hell, they even used Morrison's work as a reference to when they filmed The Matrix, worth looking into.
The thing I liked about black swan was that her life turned into a very dark demented version of swan lake. It was truly beautiful. and had the perfect ending.
Both are different, but no less amazing. Perfect Blue is more about defining one's self based on others' perceptions and expectation of you and overcoming that. It touches on the pitfalls of celebrity-obsessed fan culture and is more relevant today especially in the age of twitter and TMZ. I've got to see this movie (I'm talking about Perfect Blue. I already saw Black Swan). I loved Paprika (better than Inception, though I do appreciate it.), so I'm sure I'll love Perfect Blue.
@Zergrushzerg I never understood what people meant when they said something was gay. Are you implying that if we were to anthropomorphize anime that it would have gay sex? Are you using it as some vague derogatory because you couldn't thing of a better way of describing the faults of this particular branch of animation?
@Superdude1999 I never understand how people can't accept that language changes and meanings evolves, get over the whole gay thing, it has a derogatory meaning now too, it used to not even mean homosexual.
@Zergrushzerg I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say you have seen both Black Swan and Perfect Blue (If you haven't then your some annoying jakckass who likes to go to videos other people enjoy and try to get as much attention as possible because you are a lonely miserable excuse of an person with a Youtube account and a desperate need for communication of any kind; But I highly doubt that ). What is it about Perfect Blue that you didn't like and thought Black Swan did so much better?
@Superdude1999 You seem to talk a lot of shit for a guy who repeatedly replies to someone who said nothing to you. No offense but reading your condescending comments and inane videos, you come off as gay and desperate.
@Zergrushzerg Okay I love Black Swan, it was my favorite film of 2010... but to call Perfect Blue a piece of shit in comparison is asinine. While they both cover similar subjects (a strong female slowly losing grip of reality) they are quite different. Perfect Blue is commenting on the consequences of fame, while Black Swan focuses more on the consequences of pushing one's body to perfection/ what happens "behind the curtain." I personally think both are harrowing and can coexist peacefully.
@Zergrushzerg you fucking moron you do know the creator of this anime Satatoshi Kon was FRIENDS with the director of Black Swan and that he bought the rights to make Perfect Blue into a movie in the future? fucking idiot.
@Kellox17 Yeah, he's such friends that he didn't even give the guy credit on the Swan DVD/BD. Nor did he even prompt Portman to mention Kon in her acceptance speech.
@Zerudah so? he is going to make a life action movie of Black Swan also dude Kon died some time ago show some fucking respect for the dead. Look it up they were friends he even said that while Black Swan as not based on perfect blue he did understand why people think that. So your fucking wrong.
@Kellox17 "show some fucking respect for the dead."
I am.
"Look it up they were friends he even said that while Black Swan as not based on perfect blue he did understand why people think that. So your fucking wrong."
Darren's full of shit, and he knows it. The only reason he's acknowledging Kon at all is he got nailed.
@Zergrushzerg I'd rather be gay than something like you: A pathetic, cowed little troll living in a cave of ignorance. Angering people on social media is all you'll ever achieve in your futile life. Deal with it.
Christ, he did it again. From Dark Horizons: "The story follows a 20-something man who meets a woman on Facebook and begins a digital relationship with her, only to find she has taken the relationship to an obsessed and stalker-y place. "
So, Nina's mom was her doppelganger? And hired Lily to freak her out, then tried to kill her, so she could be the swan queen? That would've been interesting...
Well, it looks like, according to Anime News Network, Aronofsky will contribute a (personal?) message to some Japanese book on Satoshi Kon. So I can move on now.
There's nothing new under the sun and a performer being consumed by their passion has been done(The Red Shoes) but come on, the scene with the paintings talking is pretty much exactly the same! Mima/Nina ...
I still think both(and I saw PB before BS) are pretty good and BS does have the better ending.
Black Swan is like a lot of movies. Not only Perfect Blue. For example, Etoile, a ballet thriller made in 1988 with Jennifer Connelly. The finale of both these films are extremely similar as they feature both Swan Lake and a Black Swan dance.
Now the twat talked to Japan Times and managed to name-drop Polanski and Shyamalan, but not Kon. Fuck his lack of gratitude, and I hope the rest of his career is full of Fountain-level bombs, and I hope he goes bankrupt from his custody battle with Weisz, Nick Cage-style.
Aronofsky could at least honour Satoshi Kon (he didn't even do it after his unfortunate death) for giving him the basic skeleton to construct his greatest work up to today. Shame no one seems to care and they only keep cheering BS, totally ignoring the presence of PB.
(and you hear all these from someone who actually liked BS.)
@worldsquiethere AGREE. He already stated the similarity between the two, however I find that insulting because PB is simply amazing, while BS is great too it doesn't compare the two whatsoever that when they said it was the LIVE ACTION of PB I literally call BULLSHIT. The fact that he's dead should be more reason to honor him by giving some credit. Not like that will kill him, what burns me is that he saw PB before making BS. That drives me nuts. What a hypocrite.
You did such an AMAZING job! I showed this to some people, and they really believed that it was the the literal Japanese version of Black Swan... "Natalie Portman did this movie?" lol but yeah, Aronofsky should give SOME credit to Kon, not, "There are some similarities in the two films." You bought the rights to the film, I mean, really? This should be more public.
After seeing the Inception trailer you made as well, I'm beginning to think that most of the major films of 2010 were inspired if not riped off from these animes, There seems to be a lot of simularities in concept and visuals between the anime and the films you've done trailers for.
Loved it! It really fits the dialogue, I can't believe I didn't notice before, it's almost the same idea of an evil double that is after her. Should have known, he did a scene Perfect Blue in Requiem for a Dream
Wooooow, it's a great idea to make the trailer with the pictures of Perfect Blue... it fits really well together and looks creeepy!! o.O *lol* Now I wanna see the movie once again, both of them ;) 5* from me!
Looks like Darren and Nat also took credit for their stand-in's work. From Entertainment Weekly + Mark Cina @ THR: “They wanted to create this idea in people’s minds that Natalie was some kind of prodigy or so gifted in dance and really worked so hard to make herself a ballerina in a year and a half for the movie, basically because of the Oscar,” says Lane. “It is demeaning to the profession and not just to me. I’ve been doing this for 22 years…"
Gwen Stefani has donated $1,000,000...to help in the relief and recovery effort in Japan.
"I've been inspired by Japan for many years and have a true love, appreciation and respect for the Japanese people and their culture,” she said in a statement Wednesday. “The disaster in Japan is beyond heartbreaking and I want to do anything I can to help....”
I just saw BLACK SWAN and I must admit, I saw a lot of PERFECT BLUE there. Maybe I was nuts, but it was fantastic! 7th Art rocks! Thanks for sharing the video, looks great.
From a Movieline article entitled "Why Hasn’t Hollywood Rallied for Japan Relief?": “Usually there is a celebrity from the disaster area who really picks up the banner and rallies other celebrities and makes it a reality to us Americans, but who is that giant star [with ties to Japan]?”
Yes, which celebrity with ties to Japan would really motivate the relief effort? Hmm....
@Blazenix1 obviously it's a perfect footage cuz "Perfect Blue" was the original story which created Black Swan and that Darren Aronofsky bought the remake rights many years ago just to use the bath scene in Requiem For A Dream and now he used all the Perfect Blue's potential.
Funny story. I simply asked @foxsearchlight if Darren would possibly acknowledge Kon on the Swan DVD/BD like he did with 'Requiem, and I got PM'ed "Dude...Let it go." So waddya say, Superdude1999? Is it time to move on, or do ya think we should still keep this up until Darren does the right thing? ^_-
@Zerudah Well Daren Aronofsky didn't even write Black Swan, he just directed it. I don't think he should have to thank Kon every time he makes a movie just because they cover similar subjects. Still, Kon should be remebered as one of the greatest animators of all time, like Miyazaki and Disney. His work should be apreciated on its own merits, not because others made movies like his.
>I don't think he should have to thank Kon every time he makes a movie just because >they cover similar >subjects.
Perhaps, but given that this is his biggest movie so far, and given that he wouldn't be doing Wolverine 2 without Swan, he definitely owes Kon something for this one. Especially since he still has yet to acknowledge Kon in general, after he died.
>His work should be apreciated on its own merits, not because others made movies like his.
@Zerudah Either way, though, I haven't felt this empowered as a fan since we got Disney to release the Japanese track of Princess Mononoke on DVD along with the dub. It's one thing when these mash-ups get a lot of hits, but it's another thing when studios actually feel pressured to do the right thing.
@Superdude1999 Aronofsky did write Black Swan - at least in the sense that it's his concept and basic story. The reason why he didn't have a writer's credit is because of strict Writers' Guild rules about who qualifies for that. If a director has written a story but then handed it over to professional screenwriters for rewrites then those people take priority in the credits. There's a max of 3 people who can be credited as writers so often the original concept/story writer is uncredited.
@revol06 Okay, I can see that. However, my point is still that two things can exist that are similar without being connected. I'm pretty sure that I made a similar arguement on my Inception trailer about that and Paprika. They both start at the same place (a performer can't cope with the pressure being put on her) and we see two differnet ways the story can be told. I will admit that these two are more similar than Inception and Paprika are (especially in tone), but my point still stands.
@Superdude1999 Oh, yeah, I wasn't really trying to make a comparison between the two films, just thought it was worth mentioning that DA doesn't get some of the writing credit he deserves (same with the wrestler which was his concept/story too). I agree with you regarding the Perfect Blue thing, and i think Aronofsky has always been pretty upfront about where he draws his influences and inspiration from.
@Zerudah Why did he buy the remake rights if he wasn't going to remake it? I assume your argument is that he has with Black Swan, but there is not enough in common with them that he would require remake rights to make it. We get plenty of "war is hell" or "teen romanitc comedy" or even "man on a mission" movies every year despite having similar premises. I didn't know that he knew Kon, which is actually really awesome. If only they could have worked on a movie together.
@Superdude1999 Well, technically he bought the remake rights for the bath tub scene for Requiem. And I disagree about the commonality between them, or you wouldn't have enough material for a parody trailer. Hell, just Google "Call Me Mike, Black Swan VS Perfect Blue" to see the stuff you missed. :) Anyway, forget working with Kon, I just want Darren to *acknowledge* Kon, since he owes part of his success to him now. .
@Superdude1999 He originally bought the rights so he could use the bathroom scene from Perfect Blue in Requiem for a Dream. Then instead of crediting Kon for influencing his movie, he denies that it has any influence on it. What a load.
You can check out a decent write-up on it by googling "black swan perfect blue". It's the first link on google.
@Superdude1999 He bought the rights so he could use the bathroom scene from Perfect Blue in Requiem for a Dream. If you just google "black swan perfect blue" there's an article that comes up as the first hit on google.
@Superdude1999 I think it's SAFE to admit the fact that Hollywood really likes ANIME and has acknowledge that they are far more creative and have amazing plots and thus a result of millions of fans across the nation tuning in on just animated films, because most are masterful, and Hollywood said 'I WANT IN', and there you have it. I heard that DiCaprio is planning to do an Akira Live Action movie, and also Cowboy Bebop as Keanu Reeves as Spike. KILL ME NOW. PLEASE.
@Superdude1999 I happen to agree, however the fact that MANY are comparing it AS THE LIVE ACTION of Perfect Blue, I find that really insulting as a fan of either movie, they are nothing alike except for some overtones of similarity. If I had directed a movie and many fans were comparing it a popular film, I would definitely show credit and look into that film if I haven't seen it. And if they are alike, I would be assaulted with lawsuits, this seems to fall under 'he's dead, who cares', SAD.
@SOOLTV Well, the thing is Darren *had* seen PB. We've established that fact. He just doesn't want to give credit. As for lawsuits, if the contract is on the up-and-up, then I'm not sure what can be done. Of course, some guy who worked on the Passion script sued Mel when he was lied to about it being a "small" film, and eventually got his cut. But then I'm not a lawyer.
@Zerudah It is also stated that Satoshi wanted to meet Darren in the early 2000s, I guess he must had caught wind of his future projects, considering it's a decade later. But that meeting never happen. He should just give credit and call it a day, many sites are already establishing that it's not a coincidence and that he should. Even though he said he acknowledged there being similarities between Perfect Blue and his film Black Swan, (fans got to him) but said that it was not an influence. BS!
@SOOLTV I don't really know that Kon wanted to meet Darren, since disproportionate world-wide distribution of indie films like Pi means that it would've been under the radar in Japan. And I missed my own chance to see him in person at a screening and settle it. But I chose to ask Nolan, who was honest enough (or sounded honest enough) to say he hadn't seen Paprika. Guillermo Del Toro did praise Kon at that Q+A, though, so what's Darren's hold-up?
@Zerudah That's what everyone is asking and expecting for Darren to do, to give credit. His only defense is that it's not like PB, which he's right on that, but it does have subtext on it. Mere coincidence or not, the way he's acting if pretty defensive, like a guilty person. I prefer if he kept this up, this only stirs up the media and makes BS and PB more popular to the masses so they can see the comparisons themselves.
I expected nothing less from Mr. Del Toro. He's awesome.
@SOOLTV The irony is that they're in the same boat, as Del Toro was trying to adapt Otomo's Domu, while Darren's been trying to adapt Lone Wolf and Cub. But only one of them's acting like he's suddenly above anime and manga just because he finally scored his first hit.
So not only did Kon not get an honorary Annie Award, an honorary mention in the In Memoriam Segment at this year's Oscars, Nat couldn't find a place for him in her acceptance speech. Oh, well, at least Crave gave him his due under "The 10 Biggest Oscar Snubs of the Last 10 Years". (Google it.)
@Zerudah I agree that he should have been mentioned in the Memoriam Segment, but why would Natalie Portman say anything? It's not like she wrote it. I doubt she has even seen Perfect Blue.
Well, Darren and Nat, tonight's the last chance to name-drop Kon before people will forget why they liked you after the mismatched Wolverine sequel and that R-rated Willow-wannabe and that CG Masters of the Universe-wannabe. If Guillermo Del Toro can do it at a Nolan Memento Q&A, when he doesn't even have a horse in that race, then what's stopping you two?
@HumansHaveFailed "that's why i get annoyed when people call masterpieces" sounds like that's a personal and anal problem. I don't know what to tell you. They are cartoons. They're in they're own category, but that's what they are. It's not incorrect, it's just moer specific to refer to anime as anime, but they are still cartoons. Sorry, but it's not my fault you associate cartoons with young children (the old Bug's Bunny was not meant for children btw. That didn't really happen until 80s).
@HumansHaveFailed Lol! Nice try. A) Cartoons are NOT limited to what children watch on Saturday mornings. You're so off the mark it's ridiculous. B) Anime is a form of cartoon (with much worse animation quality in general to be frank). C) I know what animation is. I have a degree thank you very much. D) The first amendment is cute and all, but you need shut the fuck up and get your ass off of wikipedia because you sound like a fucking idiot.
Well, Aronofsky does own the rights to Perfect Blue.. he bought them so he could re-create the bath scene for Requiem for a Dream. Sorry if somebody's already said this, I couldn't read all the posts!
Oh shit, I totally forgot about how Mima saw all of those pictures talking to her. That was definitely another scene homaged in Black Swan, along with the subway reflections, theatre scene etc..
When I first saw a trailer of Black Swan, I thought 'It reminds me a lot of Perfect Blue," finally a month later I finally devote the time to see it. Yep a lot like Perfect Blue. I'm not going to say that I didn't like Black Swan, though I think credit goes where credit is due.
Just like Avatar copied Pocahontas. Hollywood seems to forget about the origins of these movies. I'm sorry but anyone who has seen Perfect Blue, knows that yes Requiem for a Dream and now Black Swan, inspired from it

What's sad is that I heard that this was similar to Perfect Blue before I went to see it. I had high hopes for this film and it turned out to be one of the worst that I have ever seen. It makes me sad that Black Swan got so many positive reviews when the source material is being completely neglected. :/
@Electryzza With the exception of Paprika, I saw both of these movies years ago and I was awed, pure and simple. Then these movies come out in theaters and people gush about how original and inventive they are and they are actually very derivative. Frustrating...
@Electryzza it breaks my heart every time one of this movies comes out. this time aranofsky has the rights for perfect blue (got it after Satoshi Kon died) and made references to it in requiem for a dream (bathtube scene) and denies even that black swan was inspired by perfect blue.
@pitachokx3 Yeah, that article was phony, unfortunately. But Nolan did seem to show interest in Paprika when I brought up Kon name-dropping TDK before he died. Guillermo Del Toro, who was moderating that Memento Q+A panel, however, called Kon "great".
@Electryzza They're not really remakes they just have similar contexts. Also for Inception its not really that much like Paprika the movies are really different just similar in the dream sense(also I liked Inception better). But anyways people just get inspired by other works of art. I mean Einstein was inspired by Isaac Newton. Its not really all about who does it first but who does it better. oh and btw I really want to see black swan and perfect blue now I haven't seen either.
I know that maybe i shouldnt said remakes, but the point in my comment isn't what is copied or what is influenced by something. My point is, that even if you make an anime movie, who was released earlier and has the similiar story line and plot like - "for example" - inception, it will never be ACKNOWLEDGED and praised like inception.
@Electryzza The plot of The Matrix has little in common with GITS. GITS (1989, the manga) borrowed heavily from Neuromancer (1984). Early cyberpunk inspired everything after it. They both borrow from a common culture, not eachother.
@TheBilly Well maybe i shouldnt have said "re-make" and you are right since i prefer ghost in the shell what is more mature and has a more complex story than the matrix it cant be the same. But this wasnt the POINT of my comment, the point was, even if you make an anime with a storyline and plot "like" for ex. inception what was praised so much in the media. Paprika what came out 4 years before inception will never be acknowledged like inception.
@Electryzza I believe the most scary part is that they don't only like to take things from animes, but make them into like action films themselves, script entirely. I caught wind of Hollywood trying to recreate Cowboy Bebop as Keanu as Spike, since he's a fan of the series, and maybe DiCaprio in the remake of Akira. KILL. ME. NOW. Such gems that will be ruin by Hollywood! Dx
But I agree that they should give credit, even if it's not word per word copy. The theme is the same.
This is one of Aronofsky's few films that he did not write. I'm sure he was aware of the similarities but he didn't pen them.
The protagonist is Nina instead of Mima, she's chased by a doppelganger, someone is murdered with a glass shard, there's a womanizing producer "with a reputation," a face is stabbed with a small sharp object, a timid girl faces delusions on the way to becoming an adult woman, et cetera.
Black swan reminds me more of perfect blue than inception of paprika. I'm actually surprised by how much black swan has taken from perfect blue, the main one was inception but inception was so uninspiring for it to have taken from something as grand as paprika. Inception is very much an action heist movie wearing a disguise as ambitious which it isn't and not hard to follow at all. Black swan though is literally perfect blue with a ballerina backdrop.
*laughs* It makes sense because Black Swan seems like Perfect Blue!

There's nothing new under the sun and a performer being consumed by their passion has been done(The Red Shoes) but come on, the scene with the paintings talking is pretty much exactly the same! Mima/Nina ...
I still think both(and I saw PB before BS) are pretty good and BS does have the better ending.
sunnygirly2k4 9 months ago

Zerudah 9 months ago
Aronofsky could at least honour Satoshi Kon (he didn't even do it after his unfortunate death) for giving him the basic skeleton to construct his greatest work up to today. Shame no one seems to care and they only keep cheering BS, totally ignoring the presence of PB.
(and you hear all these from someone who actually liked BS.)
worldsquiethere 10 months ago
@worldsquiethere AGREE. He already stated the similarity between the two, however I find that insulting because PB is simply amazing, while BS is great too it doesn't compare the two whatsoever that when they said it was the LIVE ACTION of PB I literally call BULLSHIT. The fact that he's dead should be more reason to honor him by giving some credit. Not like that will kill him, what burns me is that he saw PB before making BS. That drives me nuts. What a hypocrite.

After seeing the Inception trailer you made as well, I'm beginning to think that most of the major films of 2010 were inspired if not riped off from these animes, There seems to be a lot of simularities in concept and visuals between the anime and the films you've done trailers for.

@NathanielSan127 No, it was a "great idea" that Aronofsky used the scenes and part of concept from Perfect Blue to make his movie Black Swan.

I’ve been doing this for 22 years…"
Zerudah 11 months ago
From Mark Cina @ The Hollywood Reporter:
Gwen Stefani has donated $1,000,000...to help in the relief and recovery effort in Japan.
"I've been inspired by Japan for many years and have a true love, appreciation and respect for the Japanese people and their culture,” she said in a statement Wednesday. “The disaster in Japan is beyond heartbreaking and I want to do anything I can to help....”

Is it time to move on, or do ya think we should still keep this up until Darren does the right thing? ^_-
Zerudah 1 year ago 9
@Zerudah Well Daren Aronofsky didn't even write Black Swan, he just directed it. I don't think he should have to thank Kon every time he makes a movie just because they cover similar subjects. Still, Kon should be remebered as one of the greatest animators of all time, like Miyazaki and Disney. His work should be apreciated on its own merits, not because others made movies like his.
Superdude1999 1 year ago 12
@Superdude1999
It should, but (cont.)
Zerudah 1 year ago 3
@Superdude1999 (cont.) it isn't appreciated, partly because Darren's hogging all the credit.
Zerudah 1 year ago
@Zerudah Either way, though, I haven't felt this empowered as a fan since we got Disney to release the Japanese track of Princess Mononoke on DVD along with the dub. It's one thing when these mash-ups get a lot of hits, but it's another thing when studios actually feel pressured to do the right thing.
Zerudah 1 year ago
@Superdude1999 Aronofsky did write Black Swan - at least in the sense that it's his concept and basic story. The reason why he didn't have a writer's credit is because of strict Writers' Guild rules about who qualifies for that. If a director has written a story but then handed it over to professional screenwriters for rewrites then those people take priority in the credits. There's a max of 3 people who can be credited as writers so often the original concept/story writer is uncredited.
revol06 11 months ago
@revol06 Okay, I can see that. However, my point is still that two things can exist that are similar without being connected. I'm pretty sure that I made a similar arguement on my Inception trailer about that and Paprika. They both start at the same place (a performer can't cope with the pressure being put on her) and we see two differnet ways the story can be told. I will admit that these two are more similar than Inception and Paprika are (especially in tone), but my point still stands.
Superdude1999 11 months ago
@Superdude1999 Oh, yeah, I wasn't really trying to make a comparison between the two films, just thought it was worth mentioning that DA doesn't get some of the writing credit he deserves (same with the wrestler which was his concept/story too). I agree with you regarding the Perfect Blue thing, and i think Aronofsky has always been pretty upfront about where he draws his influences and inspiration from.
revol06 11 months ago
@Superdude1999 Well, yeah, except Darren had the remake rights and visited Kon, so it's a little more than just "coincidence" in his case.
Zerudah 11 months ago
@Zerudah Why did he buy the remake rights if he wasn't going to remake it? I assume your argument is that he has with Black Swan, but there is not enough in common with them that he would require remake rights to make it. We get plenty of "war is hell" or "teen romanitc comedy" or even "man on a mission" movies every year despite having similar premises. I didn't know that he knew Kon, which is actually really awesome. If only they could have worked on a movie together.
Superdude1999 11 months ago
@Superdude1999 Well, technically he bought the remake rights for the bath tub scene for Requiem. And I disagree about the commonality between them, or you wouldn't have enough material for a parody trailer. Hell, just Google "Call Me Mike, Black Swan VS Perfect Blue" to see the stuff you missed. :) Anyway, forget working with Kon, I just want Darren to *acknowledge* Kon, since he owes part of his success to him now. .
Zerudah 11 months ago
@Superdude1999 He originally bought the rights so he could use the bathroom scene from Perfect Blue in Requiem for a Dream. Then instead of crediting Kon for influencing his movie, he denies that it has any influence on it. What a load.
You can check out a decent write-up on it by googling "black swan perfect blue". It's the first link on google.
zolmaster 11 months ago
@Superdude1999 He bought the rights so he could use the bathroom scene from Perfect Blue in Requiem for a Dream. If you just google "black swan perfect blue" there's an article that comes up as the first hit on google.

@Superdude1999 Arranofsky owens the rights for Perfect Blue and all other works of Kon. You can't denie that!
khosrow 10 months ago
@Superdude1999 I think it's SAFE to admit the fact that Hollywood really likes ANIME and has acknowledge that they are far more creative and have amazing plots and thus a result of millions of fans across the nation tuning in on just animated films, because most are masterful, and Hollywood said 'I WANT IN', and there you have it. I heard that DiCaprio is planning to do an Akira Live Action movie, and also Cowboy Bebop as Keanu Reeves as Spike. KILL ME NOW. PLEASE.
SOOLTV 10 months ago
@Superdude1999 I happen to agree, however the fact that MANY are comparing it AS THE LIVE ACTION of Perfect Blue, I find that really insulting as a fan of either movie, they are nothing alike except for some overtones of similarity. If I had directed a movie and many fans were comparing it a popular film, I would definitely show credit and look into that film if I haven't seen it. And if they are alike, I would be assaulted with lawsuits, this seems to fall under 'he's dead, who cares', SAD.
SOOLTV 10 months ago
@SOOLTV Well, the thing is Darren *had* seen PB. We've established that fact. He just doesn't want to give credit. As for lawsuits, if the contract is on the up-and-up, then I'm not sure what can be done. Of course, some guy who worked on the Passion script sued Mel when he was lied to about it being a "small" film, and eventually got his cut. But then I'm not a lawyer.
Zerudah 9 months ago
@Zerudah It is also stated that Satoshi wanted to meet Darren in the early 2000s, I guess he must had caught wind of his future projects, considering it's a decade later. But that meeting never happen. He should just give credit and call it a day, many sites are already establishing that it's not a coincidence and that he should. Even though he said he acknowledged there being similarities between Perfect Blue and his film Black Swan, (fans got to him) but said that it was not an influence. BS!
SOOLTV 9 months ago
@SOOLTV I don't really know that Kon wanted to meet Darren, since disproportionate world-wide distribution of indie films like Pi means that it would've been under the radar in Japan. And I missed my own chance to see him in person at a screening and settle it. But I chose to ask Nolan, who was honest enough (or sounded honest enough) to say he hadn't seen Paprika. Guillermo Del Toro did praise Kon at that Q+A, though, so what's Darren's hold-up?
Zerudah 9 months ago
@Zerudah That's what everyone is asking and expecting for Darren to do, to give credit. His only defense is that it's not like PB, which he's right on that, but it does have subtext on it. Mere coincidence or not, the way he's acting if pretty defensive, like a guilty person. I prefer if he kept this up, this only stirs up the media and makes BS and PB more popular to the masses so they can see the comparisons themselves.
I expected nothing less from Mr. Del Toro. He's awesome.
SOOLTV 9 months ago
@SOOLTV The irony is that they're in the same boat, as Del Toro was trying to adapt Otomo's Domu, while Darren's been trying to adapt Lone Wolf and Cub. But only one of them's acting like he's suddenly above anime and manga just because he finally scored his first hit.
Zerudah 9 months ago
@Zerudah Wouldn't be the first time that happens.
SOOLTV 9 months ago
So not only did Kon not get an honorary Annie Award, an honorary mention in the In Memoriam Segment at this year's Oscars, Nat couldn't find a place for him in her acceptance speech. Oh, well, at least Crave gave him his due under "The 10 Biggest Oscar Snubs of the Last 10 Years". (Google it.)
Zerudah 1 year ago
@Zerudah I agree that he should have been mentioned in the Memoriam Segment, but why would Natalie Portman say anything? It's not like she wrote it. I doubt she has even seen Perfect Blue.

@pitachokx3 Yeah, that article was phony, unfortunately. But Nolan did seem to show interest in Paprika when I brought up Kon name-dropping TDK before he died. Guillermo Del Toro, who was moderating that Memento Q+A panel, however, called Kon "great".
Zerudah 11 months ago
@Electryzza They're not really remakes they just have similar contexts. Also for Inception its not really that much like Paprika the movies are really different just similar in the dream sense(also I liked Inception better). But anyways people just get inspired by other works of art. I mean Einstein was inspired by Isaac Newton. Its not really all about who does it first but who does it better. oh and btw I really want to see black swan and perfect blue now I haven't seen either.
09tranm 11 months ago
@09tranm
Electryzza 11 months ago
@Electryzza True. I agree with that.
09tranm 11 months ago
@Electryzza The plot of The Matrix has little in common with GITS. GITS (1989, the manga) borrowed heavily from Neuromancer (1984). Early cyberpunk inspired everything after it. They both borrow from a common culture, not eachother.

@Zerudah As well as a pile of other things: "Early cyberpunk inspired everything after it. They both borrow from a common culture"
TheBilly 10 months ago
@TheBilly Well maybe i shouldnt have said "re-make" and you are right since i prefer ghost in the shell what is more mature and has a more complex story than the matrix it cant be the same. But this wasnt the POINT of my comment, the point was, even if you make an anime with a storyline and plot "like" for ex. inception what was praised so much in the media. Paprika what came out 4 years before inception will never be acknowledged like inception.
Just simply because its an anime.
Electryzza 10 months ago
@TheBilly Yeah, but the Wachowskis started co-producing anime and anime-related projects after The Matrix, not cyberpunk stuff.
Zerudah 10 months ago
