I bought my daughter a 97 protege and paid 1600 for it. Was lx model and had 53k miles on it. That was when she was 17. Shes now 21 and has 115k miles on it and it still runs like a top. only routine oil changes and tune ups. Gets 36 mpg highway and over 30 in the city. Great investment for me. Try changing your spark plugs out.
Man when check engine light blinks like that you dont wanna be driving it. Its one thing if its staying on that means there is a code that popped up and need to be addressed. When its flashing it means you dropping fuel into your exhaust which will cause your car to catch on fire.

i got the same car and the check engin light blinking was the egr valve that needed to be cleaned ....

check the Oil Level or the Spark Plug cables mess up. N like i said may be that you just need to add Oil...

try the spark plugs and wires.. if not then it MIGHT be the head gasket
