Daekol: regarding your comment, I am an OFF ROAD DRIVING INSTRUCTOR and have been for 10 years and been driving Land Rovers for 16 years at work. More recently in dusty places ;) so I think I do know what I'm talking about when I say you DO reduce TYRE pressure when driving in sand. As per other comments it increases the amount of tyre on the sand, and decreases the ground pressure applied. This is why certain high end serious off road vehicles have auto inflate/deflate devices fitted eg: Humv
Daekol, do you know what you're on about? I'm an off road instructor and when driving on sand you DO lower your tyre pressure (tyre, correct spelling).
Never EVER lower tire pressure to get better grip on newer tires. That was in the 80's. Tires on the market today doesnt get better grip with lower pressure on sand/snow etc... Trust me, ive tried. :D
It's my wife who got stuck there , the main problem was her hard breaking on soft sand and tires not being deflated.... BTW the same year I bought myself a 2008 model Mitsubishi Pajero 3.2 DiD 4x4 , it has a 2x2 - 4x4 - 4HLc - 4 LLc - and a diff lock, after driving this baby on snow or sand or mud, you can easily say without any doubt Volvo XC70 is no off road car. My wife still drives the Volvo and she loves it much more than the Pajero... :)
I don't think the gender of the driver has anything to do with it. Just know how to drive in the sand and how to prepare for it (lowering tire pressure primarily). I am a Volvo fanatic as well, but while they are the safest cars if you get into an accident and they have the most comfortable seats of any kind of car, if you want the best AWD, you've got to go Subaru.
yeah its great at driving on ice at speed but its not that good while driving on rough roads with slopes and stuff, i am a volvo fanatic but unfortunately volvo's awd are not the best compared to other, theyr solution with differential is simply wrong, the front wheels get stuck and does not get enough help from behind. this then is of course on bumpy roads not tarmac with snow and a bit ice on it
It has a 40/60 torque split when the viscous coupling engages. and 2003+ XC70s have an electronically controlled viscous coupling, so it will stay engaged for longer once it detects 1/7th of a tire rotation of slip.
Seems pretty stupid that you have to floor it to make the rear tires move at all. I was actually considering this kind of car but after I have seen a few videos on how this AWD system works I think I will go for another car. The car's body is ok - a lot of room for stuff but what's the use if you can't get moving. Now I am looking for some subaru (looks horrible but performs better it seems)
You don't even need to take air out of the tires. Just replace the air in the head of the person who doesn't know how to drive a regular car, yet alone an AWD.
Please people, don't hate on volvo. This person is obviously inexperienced... i drive a 98 v70 xv as well as my stang, and i love that car. great on gas, looks nice, and its turbo'd and all wheel drive. Plus the sound system is great! what more could you ask for, heated seats, cuz i got that too ;)
@redfoxbody i have the same car but a 99. i love it. perfect donut machine on snow and ice. i just recently put a cherry bomb muffler on it. sounds awesome! like a v8 actually. you should do it too. im 16 years old, and kids at school laugh at my car. but i shut em up in a race, i also put in a 15psi wastegate in the turbo, thats what shuts em up. they call it silver bullet. lol
you should have turned off the traction control, it maintains stability control, but doesnt brake wheels.. When the TCS activates the brake it causes you to dig in more. It only works good for light snow and slippery conditions where you CANT dig into soft surfaces.
Come on man stop bullshitting around, what you said is exactly opposite of what is said there. BAS means STEP ON IT (on the gas pedal) so BAS BAS BAS means I'm desperatly asking my wife to step on that gas before we get stuck on that sand at the first day of New Year where everybody around is still sleeping or hang over from the party night before.
Subaru rally cars cost about $400k. £200k. The little cheap models you have are much heavier... Rally Cars (Proper ones arent really road legal. And also Volvo are the safest cars in the world probably. The door on my dads C70 Coupe must be 6 Inches wide. And weighs about 2 Tonnes, not that good for rallying.. But will save you if you think your going to crash into a Subaru.
Does it really matter how good the car is if the person can't drive it this person slowed down thats the first thing not to do when driving on sand as you can see the AWD system was working as it should a Subaru wud have gotten stuck as well.
so, you're saying subaru is made of plastic like a toy, and that they're not safe? lol
whatever the case, there has got be some reason why they're used in rallying. there has got to be some reason why they actually are considered safe vehicles. there has got to be some reason why they can do the pretty impressive things off-road. just search for them here on youtube. you'll be watching them all day long.
Subaru is the only car company that every car they make has the hoghest gopverment crash test ratings for both front and side impact. How many off road rallye races has volvo won compared to Subaru? Also I guarantee you a Subaru Outback XT will blow the doors off of a xc70 any day of the week off road and 0-60
don't be stupid, there is a method to drive on the sand, read what's written as information ,that explains how to drive on sand. I'm a member of a 4x4 club, and I can show you many pictures of Subaru's, Range Rover's, Land Rovers, Toyota's geting stuck on sand. Any car may get stuck on sand, all you have to do is to do the tricks explained here.
you guys are morons. Subaru AWD is symmetrical, (the best). the engines are of superior design, and pacement, CG is better. i agree, Volvos kick ass, but an Outback caould have done that better. I know because i have one, have raced it in RCCA, and driven it for fun through all the sand you can find. never been stuck in the sand.
The Subaru maybe made of plastic and not have "kwality" but at least it drives like a car. The Volvo is made of of (heavy) metal and drives like a tank. I know, I drove both before buying my Outback XT.
I probably think you have never ever seen a tank in real life and you don't know how they drive , Volvo XC70 is much more superior to any Subaru at quality and it's absolutely faster than the Forester or the Outback for sure.
The Haldex System is used by Audi but only on the A3/S3 models. The quattro system on other Audi models uses a center differential with a viscous clutch. The quattro system is a fulltime awd system.
I think you need to learn about driving on the sand before making such stupid comments, any 4x4 could get stuck there, just read the information written about the video, it's not about the car, it's about the driving style makes you get stuck.
Actually the AWD system in your Volvo isn`t the best for sand at all. Power is only sent to the rear wheels when the front wheels start to spin. Since this takes a moment, the front wheels allready start to dig themselves into the sand before the rear wheels start turnin. Fulltime AWD is the better choice, as it comes in an Audi Allroad Quattro for example.
The Volvo and Audi\VW AWD system are both the same system, called Haldex. The Volvo one is actually better, its reaction time is quicker than the version used in VW's and Audi's.
precisely. and also, a full time AWD system doesnt exist-the whole concept of an AWD system is that power is relayed to wheels depending on traction. there is full time 4WD however.
Neither did I :) It was just the first day of 2007 and we were driving home from a new year party, when I saw the deserted beaches I couldn't resist driving into the sand :)
I have a Volvo XC70 AWD manuel 06 :D
