Hey man good lessons! Are you using always your index finger for the 'rake-style' mutings?Sorry,I cant see that on the vid and.I use usually that finger which I hold the note.
@KellyIsMusical yea i learned that song a while back and it made learning this lesson alot easier. this sort of raking is a bit harder than the riff in cant stop
True but cant stop is more of a mute strum. raking is a bit different but work on a similar concept. learning to mute every note out except the one you are playing makes learning raking much easier
How great does the blues junior sound? Because i've got a fine marshall combo, but many says the Blues Jr sounds fantastic, and it is also smaller and lighter than my current, so im thinking of getting one.
Thanks for this, would a higher action help with this? I find that when I really dig in some other strings start to ring out no matter how hard I try to keep them muted. My action is more on the low side of the spectrum.
Higher action will help with this because you've got a larger margin of error. With low action you can barely rest on the strings without fretting them. Just make sure that you have the guitar checked out when you raise the action to make sure the truss rod is set correctly.
This is a a real good lesson on an essential component in playing in the SRV style. Nice work. Lots of people are going to find this helpful, I'm sure.
Yeah, my wife tells me that I talk too loud. I have no idea why I did this when recording these lessons. Maybe I thought that I had to talk over the guitar amp :)
Can you give some tips on raking with just the palm? i see many players raking without muting with their fretting hand, but everytime i try, the strings ring out too much.
The key to raking and muting with the picking hand is to follow the pick with the side of your hand, resting it on the strings right after the pick passes over them.
Check out my website in the next week, I'll be addressing this issue in my video podcast. You're not the first person with small hands to wonder about this.
Perhaps one of the best videos ive seen yet that opened my eyes to something new. Good stuff! Thanks man.

If learning to improv on the pent. scale is the broth, learning rakes is the meat.
Blues is not blues without rakes and bends, as far as playing it goes.

A good example of this technique that is not a blues tune, is the Chili Peppers' song "Can't Stop." Thanks for this by the way. :D

Are you using your Hot Rod Deluxe in this vid? It sounds really good. Thank you for all the lessons, they help a lot.

This was before I got the Blues Junior, so this would have been the Hot Rod Deluxe.
