  • About the "Robbie Hate" I think a lot of it comes from interviews Leon Helm has had in the years following the Band. Levon claims that Robbie took song writing credit for songs that were collaborative efforts; so Robbie receives all the Band royalties and none for the other members. Also, he and Robbie blame each other for the suicide of Richard Manuel. For additional details, there is a lot of info out there on the net and in several publications. As for me, I just enjoy the music.

  • @BIRISHPM To much bullshit

  • I miss these guys soooooooooooooo much.

  • Greatest song ever written!!

  • Certainly not rare. You can buy The Waltz Box set online.

  • any body who thinks robbie robertson wasn't a major contributor to the band just isn't on the same planet,,just like garth ,levon, rick danko and richard.. add robbie and there you have it..the band

  • I used play folk music in coffee houses and I did a lot of song from the Band. Robbie wrote lots of good stuff and I played a lot of it.

  • I love this song!!! Reminds me of my fiancee' who passed last April! He taught me alot about music!!!

  • @BinksGal ... you lost your fiance'? I cannot imagine how you are dealing with that pain, may it somehow make you stronger.

  • Robbie Robertson does get a bad rap, and its not warranted...when the Band broke up, he did a couple movies, fans didnt like it. Like someone pointed out, he wasnt the only one overdubbed for video, its done a lot. remember the Band for what they were as a whole, one of the most influential groups ever to play.

  • Fact is RR was a great guitarist and songwritter, together as a group none better...

  • Much of The Band tracks were overdubbed for The Last Waltz, including all members of The Band not just Robbie. Listen to the vocals and watch a close up of Rick yoddling on Cripple Creek and you'll see at certain points mouth movements on film not matching what you're hearing. Nothing wrong with that, it's done. But to single out RR as the only one that was overdubbed is false. Check out Rick's playing for Joni Mitchell as another example....

  • Blackhole641, I am going to assume that your comment is genuine. I question it only because the spelling "sole" is the bottom of a shoe but soul is something intangible but so much more important.

  • USAF '65-72'. Home on leave during Woodstock but couldn't make it. One of my most lost opportunities in my life. What is it in this music that still stirs my sole?

  • Fresh back from "Crazy Land," Viet Nam, caught the movie Woodstock, and immediately became a hippie! No longer a skin head! Some beautiful times followed. A lot of peace, exactly what I needed. That was my WELCOME HOME!!!! Screw the parade!

  • @TheAlohagil welcome home 3 tours

  • Why is there so much hate against Robbie Robertson (is there a particular incident or multiple)? What did he do?

  • THE Band !! The best damn Band on the planet !!

  • I have an opinion on this.

  • excellent quality video thanks for the post, p.s. 1 dislike , there always has to be 1 a.h.

  • Blazin for over twenty years to this joint!

  • Oh sheesh strings break that's why u can buy them ...ya think and Robbie Robertson is a DAMN good musician and singer stop being a hater

  • Levon Was The Man.....

  • robbie looks like a 1967 john lennon

  • 1 lonely person must be deaf, dumb and blind to dislike such a masterpiece.

  • clapton didnt break a string his guitar strap came apart from the guitar but i agree robbie got right on point im out

  • Robbie? Fabulous?? Absolutely. How about his writing? Wow.. Long live the Band. Love the Band.

  • you have 5 great musicians.garth was the spiritual and classical leader. richard was the soulful honest one.rick was the reasonable true voice. robbie was the writer /underappreciated guitarist.levon wrote sang and did everything else while playing the drums. the thing that impresses me the most is how they could all play every instrument.they were truly a band.

  • Nothin like the 60's. I'm 19, but the music lives through the generations. I know I worry how much longer it'll last but with a song like this, it'll last forever.

  • I'm also confused. Since the Band was left out of the original "Woodstock" film AND the director's cut version, where did this come from?

  • I'm confused. They say Robbie's mic was on but I only hear his voice in the first verse. I'm no Robbie hater but his voice is distinctly different from Levon's or Rick's and I don't hear it after the first verse.

  • @zipandzug That may be why this is the only Band video to surface from Woodstock. The soundman must have heard how bad Robbie sand and turned him off after the first verse. I'll admit it, Robbie hater. Great guitar player and COLLABORATIVE songwriter, but he screwed everybody else in the band when it came to money.

  • @shoutingthomas thanks for the explanation but as I said before I am no robbie hater, I quite like him just as well as the rest of the Band. As for the matter of him screwing everyone else, well I don't really know very much on that matter, I'm just watching for the music, man.

  • Robbie is probably one of the most unappreciated major rock musicians of the last 50 years.

Listen to his "Clairvoyant" album. Still a great writer and performer.

  • @dunmoria Couldn't agree more. Brilliant player. Soulful voice. His solo work is incredible. And he's adopted the mid-late 60's Lennon image in this video, hardly unique, but he did it with style.

  • love this tune reminds me of my dad everytime sleep well my mate love you save me a pint enjoy the easiness this tune rolls great stuff

  • Makes me long for hippier timess of beliefs in peace love aand brotherhood aand all those ludicrous ideas..

  • im 15 and they kick more ass than any band nowadays

  • This video and the song are'nt played in the same show, right? The words of the singers don't follow the imagine in the video..

  • Lots of electronic organs at Woodstock, so what's the fucking stigma? Save one in your neighborhood today!

  • Somebody was high!

  • @KeyGordy richard

  • Jealous americans.

  • @hanmerdan Levon Helm (singing!) IS an American. Sheesh...

  • It's true that this was never released bc of a contractual issue. However, it's also true that Robbie's mic was on during the show and he mucks up some songs. The torrent of the whole show is out there, go get it and listen for yourselves. Check out "Ain't No More Cane" and "Wheels On Fire", those are the glaring examples.

Even despite that, this is such a legendary performance, and it's a shame it was never released. Half the people who talk about Woodstock forget The Band was even there.

  • you want to share your thoughts? your feelings? fleeting thoughts? don't doublespeak. plain it. clear, unfettered with insidehead expressions that don't articulate. know what i mean, jellybean? or fatschlamp or whatever.

  • herrlich!

  • God but Levon is such an amazing talent.

  • Is the backing singer (Robertson?) tripping? Sounds like it. Sounds good.

  • Anybody other than Levon Helm singing this song is just plain wrong. There it is. simple. Right out there...

  • where's manuel?

  • Long live the band!

  • i didn't even know they were at woodstock, why were they not on the film

  • If you've taken time to look this clip up, do you want to listen to it & enjoy it? Maybe this back and forth crap over Robbie needs it's own page, instead of using this one. I spent time @ Bearsville Studios w/some of these men. Robbie Robertson is a very talented & devoted songwriter & musician, but all of them were. And I'll never dignify this thought by defending it on this page. Enjoy the music here, and take your asinine fights elsewhere. Thanks.

  • Happy sunny day to all my friends

  • Oh man! This is the first time I've seen the Band's appearance at Woodstock, oustanding! Thanks, where did you get this?

  • show me a band like THE BAND with this emotions an joy! Let me feel young again. And hope that my chldren and grandchilds will share this feeling, too

  • Two things... First, Eric Clapton himself has often talked about how amazing Robbie is on guitar... One only needs to watch The Last Waltz when Eric came onstage for Further On Up the Road when he broke a string on the opening lick. Robbie took over without a hitch, and it was amazing.

Second, the Beatles were ALWAYS in the studio during orchestral arrangements. Mark Lewisohn is the definitive authority on their sessions. Read his books and you will see the light.

  • @gzackerman I know exactly what part of The Last Waltz you're reffering to. But, I think Claptons strap just came loose. I could be wrong. But, picking up a solo isn't difficult at all. They were trading solos back and forth in whatever key it was. I'm not saying Robbie wasn't good. Personally, I think he's far better than Clapton. His style is way more fun.

  • @gzackerman I dont think he popped a string. His strap just came off which he just fixed in a matter of a second.

  • @gzackerman claptons strap came loose,,watch it again,,they both had a good chuckle over it and robbie plays a great break.. I like to call them the canadian beatles if thats ok? I hear that levon is a real hothead.

  • @gzackerman Robbie wasn't amazing on the Last Waltz, his solos were overdubbed later.

  • @badbobdebraj Buy ears!!!!! He WAS and IS great in the Last Waltz!

  • @gzackerman nice!!!

  • @gzackerman Robbie sure can play.. and Clapton is God.. remember? further on up the road, form the last waltz, ... they traded leads.. Robbie was awesome, Clapton was magic...lots of fun... Actually used it one of my videos second song... see video responses

  • @gzackerman actually it wasn't a string Clapton broke. if you watch closely the strap comes off the top of the guitar and throws him off.

  • Harry Potter on guitar!

  • Amazing.

  • ...gee, how long can a band page go without a robbie-hater showing their ugly mug? it's like some form of skin-itch that keeps coming back....

i always imagine these people leaving the computer and walking back to enjoy dinner with their families with a straight face...the hate bubbling underneath...

  • @fatschlamp1 Wow. You probably aren't far from the truth.

  • @fatschlamp1 at the moment...in all it's new year glory, I have a totally age inappropriate crush on Robbie... I would have his kids any time he says. *SWOON!!!*

  • @noahstfuboi. more than half of the songs performed by The Band without Robbie were written by Robbie, so your comment/opinion is irrelevant and stupid.

  • @noahstfuboi You are an idiot! Robbie is a fantastic guitarist and composer!

  • WHY was this not in the film?

  • hate robbie robertson...didn't he know they never turned his microphone on?

  • @larkjd That's ok. He hates you douche!

  • Just fantastic

  • love Rick Danko

  • Thank you for sharing this beautiful capture!!! Why have I never seen this performance before? It's the best live I've heard of this iconic song. And why this wasn't on the Woodstock CD or maybe I'm just confused but I know i've not seen this before.

    Thanks for posting it!!!

  • @mythtree Their manager, Albert Grossman, could not come to terms contractually, so that is why The Band, one of THE headliners, did not appear in the Woodstock movie (or soundtrack, if I remember correctly).

  • @rinkster22 thanks kindly, that is too bad, for it's such a gem of history & in the spirit of the times it seems $ to get in the way of sharing's somewhat ironic to me. I mean Woodstock wasn't exactly about making $ now was it in the end. I guess he thought he knew what he was doing, I mean he discovered peter paul & mary, & janis joplin...& surely many others. At least there is this medium to share. & what a nice share, right? & thanks again for your reply!

  • Levon Helm wrote in his book that because Robbie's microphone had been live (instead of turned off as it typically was), they couldn't use any of the Woodstock audio.

  • @HagbardCeline42 Well that's just bullshit. Sounds great. It was Albert Grossman.

  • It needs to soughted so it doesn't deteriorate anymore. You can HD it up. Its so rare and pure. This live version is the one I know the best. The live version got played more then actual record. ESPECIALLY THIS WOODSTOCK CLASSIC. WELL DONE. Just get this to someonje who can crisp it and keep it for all time.

  • never realized it was the drummer singin lead :) pretty $@#&in cool

  • @bbbbbum. Levon Helm: best singing drummer ever!

  • their performance is simply great ... just close the eyes and enjoy the music...

  • Too bad the video isn't synched up except for the first half minute or so.

    They all look so young!

Great video even with it being completely out of sync!

  • @weadley -yeah but it's such rare footage

  • Incredible almost moving performance. Why it wasn't featured on the final film is weird. Was that Alvin Lee walking off stage at the begining? great to see drummers singing. Thanks so much for uploading this beautiful song

  • @Django5198 What filma re you talking aboout

  • @Dane333W The woodstock movie. They were'nt on it

  • nice
