  • This was not actually an alternate ending. Coppola was required by the Philippine government to destroy the kurtz compound when he was done shooting this is just the footage of him destroying the compound

  • @madcowjr1999 that's true, but it was used as an alternate ending in some versions of the film. some versions have actually incorporated this as an actual scene rather than just a set getting blown up. notice the changing camera angles.

  • Perfect ending:

    "The horror...the horror..."

    *everything gets blown up*

  • I remember watching this sequence in the theater back in '79, so it was deleted after the initial release. IMO this perfectly captures what befalls all peoples and nations that naively work for western governments, they will be turned on and destroyed.

  • For me, the movie was the best as it was release in the cinema in 1979. All this Director's cut and other ending make the movie look dumb. The ORIGINAL was just PERFECT in my eyes and couldn't be made better...

  • Alternate ending? I saw the very same ending in the theater during its first run. Canoga Park California, 1979.

  • Seeing this scene, the Doors were right I suppose. At the beginning it was day and now after the journey into the darkness...the act is in shadows. Damn

  • Where's the music ?

This WAS the theatrical ending form 79 and the HBO version as well.

  • I can see why it wasn't used,,, exploding coconuts? Would have turned the entire thing into a comedy.

  • Devo dire, che questo film non mi ha entusiasmato!

  • It was the perfect ending. And now it's gone. I won't watch Redux, it's a travesty.

  • This ending is far more powerful than Brando babbling "The Horror!".

The incendiary bombing suggests that the more powerful society is capable far more horror than Kurtz and the VC he emulated ever were. "Power corrupts" makes a complete circle here.

With this ending Apocalypse Now would be rated as superior to The Godfather by nearly everybody.

  • @nlanich as far as your last statement goes, that's not necessarily true. the reason this ending was not put in the theatrical release is because it was met with much criticism from audiences and critics during screenings of the movie. while i would agree it is a superior ending, it wouldn't necessarily have made the movie superior to the godfather.

  • @legendarywar1 cont. . . . So you can see how I was confused with the ending. Until I finally got around to listening to Coppola's seemingly flamboyant commentary. I should have known, what with all the myths he demystified as coincidences or ad libbed dialogue, that this would be another one.

It turns out that Francis' original ending stopped just before the credits. The stone head and the registration of the movie. He gave the first audience program pamphlets like old Hollywood. cont. . . .

  • @nlanich That ending was intended to parallel the ending of Heart of Darkness more

  • @nlanich,,Kurtz wasnt emulating the VC simply because he saw 'genius' in their methods...You honestly think audiences were stumped as to who was capable of more horror? What fucking planet would they have had to be living in? This ending doesnt suggest shit like what you're claiming..its boring and if you think because of a climactic ending this movie would rank better than the Godfather (which it already does) you probably need to stick to the Godfather. More of an obvious tale.

  • And so the truth goes up in flames...

  • Not facing the cruel brutal animalistic part in us causes "The Horror", not accepting that we humans are the most vicious and deadliest species ever populated this planet.

Do one remember what Kurtz said about the cut off arms of the little babies? - Charly's never haunted by "The Horror" because he is able to face the beast, to stare directly into its eyes, emotionless, without passion he does what has to be done. For Charly there are only 2 simple ways out: being extinct or survive.

  • @MrBaebel Now that I think about it, the horror is not what's inside us, the horror is just an awakening. Inside every man is a beast, an instrument of war, rape, violence, and the desire to conquer. The horror just activates the beast within us, much like it is in war. War and all it encompasses is the horror, and within every man is a heart of darkness that the horror needs to survive.

  • @legendarywar1 cont. . . . Of course, this wouldn't last. He can't give papers to everybody in the world. So Francis had to make an ending with credits on the screen . . . and he added footage from the explosions (and you can see some of them in the overture-like intro) of the last set, which he had to do as apart of his contract and it's deadline, to it. So he put that alongside it . . . until he realized in his absent mind that people would think Willard called in the airstrike. concl . . .

  • The original version is of course far better than this one.

This alternate version suggests that "The Horror" might be fightened and destroyd in the end with our sophisticated weaponry and all would turn out fine.

When Willard and Lance leave the scene simply behind "The Horror" will live on, luring in a mighty dark damping warm jungle haunting us in our worst nightmares...on and on and on...

  • @MrBaebel i think the point of this alternate ending is to show that even though it was destroyed and maybe even defeated, the horror will always rise up from the shadows and return. i think it also shows that despite the horror of kurtz gone, it was a futile attempt, since the horror is not in one man, but in all of us.

  • @legendarywar1 I too thought that and I felt that this original ending meant something too. I thought what with the fact that Almighty was the name of the jet plane (was that the name) and the bombs here meant that this is how the world ended. Hence Apocalypse Now. Then I thought how in The Hollow Men, inspired by Heart of Darkness (the first words of the poem are Mistah Kurtz - he dead), the world ends not with a bang but with a wimper. I assume Eliot was thinking of his last words. cont. . . .

  • @legendarywar1 conlusion . . . So FFC swiped it for fear that people would think it was an ending.

So he says . . . . . . Oh, how it makes me wonder how much damage this film did to his morale and I'm not just talking about the one time I saw a real animal sacrifice on film. I mean . . . to not notice that. Maybe this is Coppola's confession coincidentally superimposed on Conrad's. Makes me wonder. Were those really the last words of Georges Antione Klein?

  • @MrBaebel the horror is not only in the location, it is in the shadows everywhere, in all of man. People must make a choice, Williard chose darkness. Coppola showed this brilliantly, every scene where you can see the contrast making Williard a silhouette is epic. When he killed the woman on the sampan to get a move on, the screen fades and you see Williard as a shadow and later when he pauses with the festival in the background, Williard is again a shadow. Good job

  • STILL- too many men- a paradise like vietnam- of course they have to rape /destroy it- cowards dont shoot their officers-cowards shoot women/children-isnt there a a way to depop violent men- without killing women/children?

  • @lmollot honestly, no, there isn't.

  • Really? Blackhawk down didn't appeal so much to me I mean it's a great story but the actors didn't have too much charisma and there wasn't really a comradeship type bond between the actors and the battle that took place in Somalia was a weak effort by the government to end anarchy in Somalia which didn't make a great war story however the heroic efforts made by the Soliders are always outstanding

  • @Messmaster08 I would agree on some level. It's difficult to successfully craft a war film that is realistic, violent, and historical while simultaneously balancing the difficulties faced by the soldiers on a physical, mental, social, and emotional level. In essence, black hawk down had a tall order, and the fact that they managed to achieve it on an adequate level speaks volumes for the film industry. It wasn't a perfect movie by any means, but it was certainly praiseworthy.

  • This ending was the best IMHO! Maybe some slow mo and another track could have done it..."why me worry, lol" I was too young at that time, and do i hear some coughing ont that track? Thieves, lol! Watch the RE-RE-RELEASE of the Vakyrie Ride in 5 days on my channel, folks!

  • @misterpeaky i appreciate that you like the video, but please refrain from spamming or your comments will be removed.

  • This ending was the best IMHO! Maybe some slow mo and another track could have done it..."why me worry, lol"

  • I think that Full Metal Jacket is better than saving private ryan and black hawk down

  • I think they're all good, but yeah it's all based on opinion on which war you think is the most exciting. I think they all are.

  • @Zikan13 I liked it when slappy was dusted in the head.

  • The best war movie ever!
