  • Crap, wrong Paper Tiger.. But.. I do love Beck..

  • touche, my friend

  • looks like michael cera

  • @wickedalibis Michael Cera looks like him.

  • this is plagiarism

  • <3 Capsized boats in the sea

  • Hey Beck, maybe I could appreciate your brilliant lyrics more if you didn't MUMBLE SO GODDAMN MUCH.

  • @onlyhere4commenting he doesn'y mumble in this one, but yeah i see what you mean. I don't know, i like a song where you cant undeerstand what the fuck they are talking about. Makes it that much more exciting.

  • this song makes me melt

  • AMAZING orchestration.

  • another artist indebted to lush orchestral arrangements made for rick music, as was Julian Cope for "Scott 4" 1969

  • even if beck is clearly imitating Gainsbourgh style, he has made one of the most profound albums of the past decade, i believe

  • love the orchrestra

  • beck id cool, so many great funky jams!

  • Best "break-up" album of all time.

  • you can tell this song is inspired by Serge Gainsboug's album Histoire de Melody Nelson, which is only a good thing. I love Sea Change, great album.

  • Can't believe it's been almost ten years since Sea Change came out.

  • Although his previous work was good, this album will be remembered as his zenith. Pure genuis.

  • this song wasn't mixed very well but i like it still. the bass and kick drum are muddy sounding

  • @PaulWykel Your listening to it on youtube 240p dude.. Don't judge the mix based on this.

  • @kenrben i used to listen to the cd all the time and it was the same back then.

  • @PaulWykel It's just the crappy Youtube audio compression. It sounds perfect on the CD.

  • @MetalSlugzMaster buy the CD.

  • @maitreperiard buy the CD.

  • 11 are just fucking retards who are on internet to say shit an rate theirs asses

  • it's a song about how his body and mind were taken over by celestial parasites after giving himself to scientology!!!!!!! beautiful, creepy... :)

  • ***8*** ~ All Day Every Day ~

  • awesome bass, amazing arrangement, lyrics, strings, voice, guitar, tempo....

E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G about this song is ON POINT!! I could listen to it forever.

  • @lapetrov Between two Melody Nelson sessions...

  • Beck does sample other artists, but the thing that separates him from other artists that sample is he "samples" unlike the others who shamelessly steal the entire song and claim it as a "sample". Sampling is a true art form, and Beck does it justice. Besides, he doesn't even sample THAT often.

  • @Dunderhead36 Before sampling there was borrowing... before rap there was talk over... and Serge used the same recipes than Beck.

  • This song is so GREAT!

  • Papercuts are the worst.

  • I haven't a clue how much of the arrangements on this track are either directly sampled or just inspired by Gainsbourg's Melody Nelson album.

What I do know however is that "Histoire De Melody Nelson" has been my all time favourite album for many years and Beck's stylish reworking of parts of that album here are almost as inspirational as the original, it's a gorgeous piece of music.

  • @CPL593H72 thanks for that- I know a little Gainsbourg and have loved what I've heard. Your helpful comment has spurred me on to investigate further :)

  • @hannahbufton You're welcome. Start with a copy of the compilation Initials S.G. as it's a flawless overview of his career, and of course a copy of Histoire De Melody Nelson if you haven't already, best album I own, although Sea Change ain't far behind either :)

  • I can never get enough of this

  • love this song<3

  • Top notch Beckness right here.I heard his marriage was breaking up around this time.I wish nobody had to go thru that hurt.

Thank you Beck Hansen for so many wondrous tunes. You mattered here on Earth, where you made us laugh and made us cry and made us shake our collective booties.

  • Even though this is such a beautiful arrangement and every part shines, Justin's bass line is just nasty!

  • Scott Pilgrim...?

  • @WenceslaoMontana

Bit more masculain and talented ;P

  • I love the sounds he creates on this whole album-- definitely started with Mutations and then came to fruition with this album. I love him-- he's earned a place as one of my favorite artists of all time.

I've been trying to capture some of his sound with my music lately. If any of you have a free moment, I'd love to hear what you think of it-- check out my new music video on my channel. Thanks!

  • Simply fucking amazing.

  • This is the one track that will never fail to give me shivers each and everytime I listen to it. It is just so absolutely pure and the orchestrated theme makes my soul delighted.

  • I always get shivers right at the end of the song where he sings:

"One road back to civilization, but there's no road back to you".

There's no going back, and you will never be the same person again. There's only going forward. I avoided Beck for the first few years. My loss. He is a genius, to be sure.

  • Wow, this sounds exactly like Gainsbourg. Check out v=Rwk1MX9wbag

  • @n0td4v3 it's a sample :)

  • @n0td4v3 Yeah, Beck sampled Gainsbourg for this song. You can check online.

  • @mascadanator I'm french and I agree :)

  • "Tu t'appelles comment ?

    - Melody"

  • Fix yourself while you still can....

  • Most music to me is both complicated and simplistic, both internally and externally.

  • Beck's dad Dave scored the strings on this track

  • Gainsbourg anyone?

  • @WetKant Completely. it sounds like a cheap cover.. cause the original is so much better!

  • @WetKant Melody!!!

  • @WetKant Not Gainsbourg , Jean-Claude Vannier ;)

  • @WetKant cargo culte anyone? =)

  • best track off the record imo

  • Who needs drugs when you have this song?

  • love how the guitar is lower than the bass it confuses my soul but makes perfect sense perfect sense...

  • it's a copy !!!

Just listen Serge Gainsbourg ("cargo culte")and you will understand.

Gainsbourg is a god and Beck just copy him, nothing else...

    P.S. : i love Beck

  • @seb59160 Thanks for writing that....because if it wasn't for you i would never have listened to that song, loved it, figured out you were right, then bought L'histoire de Melody Nelson. Maybe somewhere down the line i wouldve read about it but most likely not. I swear ive listened to that album over ten times now, its a masterpiece. Thank you very much!!

And ive noticed Beck takes ideas from a lot of artists like Nick Drake, Skip Spence, and many others. He knows his shit though, hes great.

  • @415BAY415 : glad I did know this album, I advise you also the album "Aux armes etc. ..", a sublime album of reggae master Gainsbourg (with The Wailers!)

  • @seb59160 Serge Gainsbourg is not a Reggae master, was a MUSIC master. His best solist album ''Le Ballad de Melody Nelson'' NOT HAVE NOTHING OF REGGAE.. Much of Psychedelia, Funk, ballad and orchestration.

  • It's as if Melody Nelson was reincarnated at this guy.

I was wondering what happened to her after "Cargo Culte".

  • Melody Nelson a les cheveux rouges et c'est leur couleur naturelle.

  • How does that violin speak to me without words.

  • OHHHHHHHH YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • Fuck, this video made my brain go into shroom mode

  • So heavy I broke my back.

  • I think it's my favourite song off Sea Change.

  • Gainsbourg

  • @HeleneForever0086 Yup! definitely Gainsbourg's "Melody Nelson"! Nice one!

  • @HeleneForever0086

    Oh, yeah. Certainly

  • whiskeyclone period net

  • And it was a good song. I remember, my producer is very particular about that kind of thing. I was like: 'I don't know, can we put this out?' And he said: 'It's fine. It's a good piece of work.' But yeah, I love the way Gainsbourg uses the orchestras. It's not afraid to be dramatic and bold and emotional. There's something really cool about the sound too."

  • But when we were making the record, I wanted to do something with strings that was very dramatic. And we were listening to that. And (he chuckles) we ended up with something that sounded exactly like it (Melody Nelson). I didn't intend that. But we did it and it came out so good, in my opinon, it sounded like a tribute. But it transcended that.

    (continued)...

  • This is what beck had to say about Serge:

"I've always listened to him. When Air came out and some of the other mellow (French) pop musicans I felt like it was their territory. I've been listening to Gainsbourg for years and I've always wanted to do something influenced by him. To me, a record like Melody Nelson has so many possibilities.

  • its a good album but its not better than odelay.

  • Fan

  • mrth

  • i wonder who the 5 people who disliked this are we should molest them

  • @SEAchefMojii I strongly agree. We should make them eat their own dicks, crap them out & make them eat 'em again. Maybe it was just Pete Doherty from 5 different accounts. I fell down the stairs holding a guitar & accidentally wrote a Pete Doherty song.

  • It is the greatest tribute to Serge ever done. I LOVE it!

  • that electric guit is just too good

  • and I enlist hereby

  • ive been listening to all of his albums lately...this is soooo much better than midnight vultures

  • Excellent! Very clever homage. It's great that this sort of thing can gently point all the young people to the real source of inspiration - SERGE GAINSBOURG! Hail to the real genius!

  • @gemear2 Melody Nelson

  • mutations mutations mutations

  • @78wolfe indeed.

  • this seems ripe for the 3hr mark of a good L trip.

  • @turkeysub3000 been there done that

  • @turkeysub3000 3 hour mark?!! lmfao, sounds like that requires some practice, getting fine art down to a fine art.

  • Epic funk, Epic Riff, Epic lyrics.

  • exactly. this album was miles from his "party" style releases - but still my fav of all of his discs

  • Beck's best album in my opinion, when someone drops everything about what people know them as and there style just becomes naked for an album its just beautiful.

  • @justinorville

Agreed! This is how I felt about Jar of Flies by Alice in Chains, as well as Nebraska by Bruce Springsteen. It's a definite sign of talent and precision when artists can do that.

  • @justinorville

He did that on Mutations, too, though. Personally, my fave is Mellow Gold, but that's the great thing about Beck. He does something so new each time, that most of his albums are great, even the ones that utilize sampling, which I'm completely against. He makes something out of it. If you haven't heard Beck's VU & Nico covers yet, you should.

  • @mussman717word there are seriously still people alive who are "completely against sampling" ? I just figured they all died off somewhere around the Korean War.

  • @nichobert

No, people who listen almost exclusively to real music made with real instruments are still around. We're just few and far between in the age of Lil' Wayne.

  • @justinorville -Absolutely agree! Sea Change is a great Album!!!

  • @justinorville i agree.

  • yeah mango chunk is probably listening to lady caca

  • although i really like beck a lot, i personaly likes Serges version waaaaay better. Just even only the french singing of gainsbourg is crazy good, so are the 70's...

  • It's all a matter of opinion. I would rather listen to Beck's version because the Serge Gainsbourg version seems foriegn to me. I see the similarities in the songs but Beck's version is more modern and i like the canges in rythm. It's obvious Beck Hansen is a great musician, singer and song writer. Great song, Great Band.

  • Gainsbourg though, the more I learn about him, the more he fascinates me...but it would help if I learned some French lol

  • Serge Gainsbourg- Histoire De Melody Nelson

  • Welcome to the post-modern world folks. Everything's been done before and most things reference something else.

  • @MangoChunks or the daughter of Serge Gainsbourg colaborating with Beck.

  • Maybe I'm just musically inexperienced, but I think Beck's song is quite a lot different from Serge's, melody, lyrics, feeling, and just about every way except that they both have a high strings (violins?) playing over a deep bass; inspired by it maybe, but not a copy. But anyways, don't base your opinion of Beck on one song, his style changes drastically between albums, and usually his songs sound like little else, combining multiple influences across genres.

  • @HenryfracCT

I politely beg to differ. I have only slept with women, including yo mama. Go lunt a chunt.

  • WTF?? Do you know absolutely NOTHING about Beck, he is was of the few true artists left these days, and considering that Beck co-worte and performed on Charlotte Gainsbourg's entire album, I don't think Serge would mind. Stop being so negative, if you don't like it then don't listen to it, simple as that

  • i dont know the bassline from darkstar is bad too

  • One of the illest beck basslines ever. The strings are insane too.

  • The problem is that, it's a melody from Serge Gainsbourg!

type: serge gainsbourg-melody in this website ;)

look for the video that have 7:31min and enjoy !

  • even though its simple, it reaches to my heart..

  • @imontape It aint simple. You couldn't be more off.

  • @imontape This is anything but simple.

  • @imontape ohhh, this song is by no means simple.

  • Okay, so the similarity to Melody was intentional? Yahoo, I'm NOT insane! The first time I heard this, my immediate thought was: this sounds like Gainsbourg!!!

  • same here, its very similar, the bass, the guitars, the orchestra

  • this reminds me of how much I love Histoire de Melody Nelson

  • definitely an album worth play to my children

(i havent got any thou! ;)

  • 5 STAR CD!!!

  • This whole album is just amazing...

  • I think we should talk about an influenced creation instead of a cover. Beck definitely rocked this one off with the same atmosphere as Melody, but with a nostalgic taste that really fits better the strings adaptation.

  • there's one road to the morning

there's one road to the truth

there's one road back to civilization

but there's no road back to here

    great lyrics

  • *but there's no road back to you

  • sounds alot like Serge Gainsbourg's "Melody". pretty good cover i have to admit :)

  • It's not a cover. A homage, yes. But not a cover. Lyrical content isn't even close to similar.

  • thank god.

I love the music, but the lyrics are creepy. (for Melody Nelson)

  • that's true

  • Nice version - still cant beat Serge Gainsbourgs original. Also check out David Holmes cover 'dont die just yet'. Not as chilled out but still great

  • 0:47 I love that work with the string instrument. Does anyone know what it is? I want to say violin or cello.

  • eletrics guitar

  • I know, dude, i love that! and it's a combination of mostly violins and some cellos.

  • yeah a big part of cello and some violins

  • Wow! The sound effects here are the best

  • Great cover of Serge Gainsbourg's Melody.

  • When I heard this song for tyhe first time on my iPod, when the strings came in at 0:46 It was an eargasm to me! I love becks music!!!

  • it sounds more like a modern guilt song than a sea change song

  • great song ;)

  • Awesome video of the Jeremy Blake covers.

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again: A Beck song with his dad composing the strings makes the song even more incredible. They really make the song sound so powerful. Fav. strings: 2:24.

  • hey budnick, I hope a paper tiger mauls ug

  • i'd actually never heard of Beck until i looked up an alis morrisette song from the breaking dawn list and someone commented that the music was arranged by the same person. its exceptional his voice is really beautiful and i agree he could do a brilliant James Bond theme song

  • Joli hommage à l'album légendaire de Gainsbourg

  • Omg... he probably didn't know it at the time, but he made the greatest James Bond theme song !!!

  • what a great song. sums up my current situation perfectly. "I just hold to nothing to see how long nothing lasts"

    sigh.

  • Thanks, Jigsauce. Great song, clever video. I agree w/ most of your 'post'-ers: Beck's stuff is fresh because he's a consummate student of pop music history, and makes Gainsbourg, Skip Spence, etc. his own...very much like The Beastie Boys or Quentin Tarantino.

  • dont worry........cant use enough characters to complete the outermost rings on the same side of three complete humingbird bilingual conection plates

  • the music is taken from the french singer Serge Gainsbourg ''Melody''. I prefer the original but this is still a good song.

  • no it's not it's a nod to/rip off - but the music was arranged by his dad David Campbell. but you're right it's very similar to Gainsbourg's album.

  • It means you haven't heard it well...

  • are you talking to me? I have very good musical ears, this is not a sample of gainsbourg, the strings were arranged by david campbell - his dad, and are very similar to melody nelson. please don't try and tell me my business. thanks.

  • I don't say that you have no musical ears, and I have never said that it was a sample, don't say what I haven't and calm down, I didn't meant to get you angry De Niro... This song is inspired a LOT for Vannier's work, it doesn't make it bad, on the contrary.

  • I never said it was bad - I like beck, i like gainsbourg. is vannier gainsbourg's former string arranger?

  • Yup, on Histoire de Melody Nelson. ^^

  • loved sea changes his best in my opinion!!!!

  • i love the orchestra in the background

    it's so sweet~

  • Sea Change

  • beck hansen is just...a musical genius!

his music is so different, and amazing, not like anything else.

  • absolutely awesome - Beck rulz!!!

  • @Darkblighttmo: Whut.

  • its the 'strings' in this one that sold me. marvelous.

  • absolutely point on. havn't heard stings used this way since madman across the water....unless of course one wants to discuss the grand ole sounds of the seventies via stereo...and of course, by this, i mean analog v digital. try em'.

  • love his style not your general mainstream crud thats out there today. wish i saw him when he was in oz.
