@flyforfunfunny Actually if he would've saved dead tissue there's a chance that once he frees himself that that tissue will recirculate into his body. Aron was actually lucky in HOW he was stuck once he was stuck, to the point that atleast the rock prevented infected and dead tissue to circulate back to is body. If this would have happened, he would have died from massive infection, an even more painful way to go saddly... But he did everything right surprisingly :)

@malicios It actually did get infected pretty badly. In real life this actually happened differently: he was brushing dirt off his wrist with knife, and he accidentally slid the blade into the skin, and when he took it out, decomposition gases sprayed out. So he knew the arm was infected, and that scared the shit out of him, and he thrashed around in a panic. His leg slipped as he was panicking, he lost his footing, and his arm bent. That's when he realized he could break the bones.

@malevmaliac Yes the dead tissue was but it obviously didn't enter the body which is what I meant. Of course it was infected but the alive tissue wasn't infected yet do to circulation being cut off from forearm to hand from the boulder.

@malicios Oh it did enter the rest of his body, and he got horribly sick because of it, but thankfully he survived. He was on a truckload of drugs for months. While he was in the canyon his crushed hand acted as an isolation valve on his circulation, which is why he didn't die of blood loss. But infections can still spread even without blood. If he had enough water to live for a few more days, he likely would have died anyway from gangrene or something.

This actually happened in real life - a mountain climber Aron Ralston was trapped for 5-6 days in a canyon, and he cut his own arm off to free himself. And yes, he did state he barely made a sound or whimper when he was cutting his arm, the only part that was almost unbearable was the nerve (in this scene in the movie, you see the actor scream in pain when he touches the nerve!).

Also, if I remember correctly, this was when he was already mentally exhausted, not many men with a clear mind would cut off their own arms, hence his calmness, besides not many men actually scream like a monkey when under immense pain, they tend to, well, momentarily lose their mind and act quieter or scream in silence.

In the documaentary he did, Aron Ralston describes the amputation himself & it was literally exactly the same as this scene - the man's reaction & everything matches what Aron said he did/what it was like. Youtube search 'Aron Ralston Part 1 of 6', the others will come up in the recommended videos. He helped to direct this movie & later said that it was about as factually accurate as it could get without being a documentary. What an amazing man.

In 2003 a man named Aron Ralston was actually stuck in that hole with his arm slammed to the wall by a rock for 6 days, 3 of which he had no food or water. Then on the 6th day literally cut his arm off... You should go watch the documentary about it, it's pretty extraordinary
