It was more the plan itself was retarded. If they would have retroed with some sort of A.P.U. turbine or something I could dig it. But rocket packs blowing right into the pilots face may lead to a crummy landings which it indeed did, and the last one was really bad.
@TheZa1994 rocket exhaust gases burn up to 5000 degrees, also the front rockets probably blinded the pilot and you can see how the plane drops on the ground ritght before touch down. and all the fuel is in the wings of the plane so when the plane dropped on the ground the right wing broke and the fuel caught fire.
The german BND is like cancer. It affects sane countries and starts to grow uncontrollable. The BND snitchers use their surveillance and brainwashing techniques to spread its metastases. These are then used to drain as much money and goods from the affected country to finance their greed and their aim of world governance. There is, as with cancer, only one cure. to reply to the darkfalls comment well the speed and range of a fixed wing aircraft was probably needed for the anticipated mission helicopters can land just about anywhere but lack in speed and range sometimes this would of been before the deployement of the v-22 Osprey witcht combines speed and range of a fixed wing with a helicopters landing ability
Northrop was the original designer of the F/A-18 or then known as the YF-17. The YF-17 was the prototype made to compete with General Dynamics's YF-16 (aka F-16 Falcon) in the LFP (lightweight fighter program). The USAF took the F-16 model with the Navy/Marines taking the YF-17. Northrop hired McDonald Douglas to help produce the F/A-18 and MD eventually bought the rights and design outright. MD merged with Boing in 1997.
what i dont understand is why are they using something like this aircraft to rescue the hostages when you can fly a helicopter or two right into wherever they need to go.. i dont think there were enough people under captivity to require a c130's carrying capacity.
@TheDarkfalls what i believe is the reason for them using a plane instead of a helicopter is that planes have a longer distance that they can travel then helicopters. Also, planes are a lot faster then helicopters and when ur trying to get out of a hot zone, speed is very important. and again, this is just what i think.
If you are really asking who is the maker of that plane is the famous Lockheed one who maked famous Lockheed F117 and SR7 Black bird ( i think its still the fastest jet) and i think that they are the ones who created the era F16 F18 F22
Why didn't they fire the rocket after touch-down? I guess that would have avoid the wing breaking off, which I suppse isn't very desireable on a plane!?
WTF! who was the genious who invented that??? I think could be more simple, cheap and over all, safe, to send another kind of plane! Illuminated brain!
This plane was developed for when the US was trying to plan a rescue mission to free the American hostages in Iran. The only place they could land near the embassy was a soccer field. No other vehicle existed which met their specifications to do the job.
A rocket boosted machine can be as safe to carry people as the challenger. Many times USA like to take high risk missions with low probabilities of success. In this case, I don't know the political reasons but, unless they were wanting to carry tanks, I'd think about using helis or even ospreys (with all its cons!) or just to parachuting the machinery (also the tanks) from the C-130
if you really want to know who genius who make that is THE FAMOUS Lockheed one who created SR7 Blackbird ( i think its still that fastest jet) and Lockheed F117 and the era of F16 F18 F22
There were JATO bottles on the fuselage under the rear portion of each wing... This was supposed to be to rescue the American Hostages from the Iranian Idiots in 1979
It was an experimental aircraft rigged to rescue US hostages held by Iran using a soccer field as a runway. The pilot is NOT an idiot, he's risking his life testing a top secret aircraft.
@dorbie i agree that the pilot is not an idiot and yes hes risking his life, but u have to admit he did make a mistake that pretty much stopped this project. I personally thought this project could have really gone somewhere but because the pilot started the rockets before he touched ground was the reason why the plane crashed. The way it was meant to be used is the rockets are to be deployed after u touched down. I really thought this idea was really great, just feel bad for the pilot.
@dragon9112 Maybe a chopper isn't big enough, or the airlift point is to far away for a chopper. the c130 can do some tactical approches from an altitude of 28000ft. you can only know if it works if you test it. Many people give there lives for evolution of aviation not only military, also in civilian aviation.
@Maaarteh There was an attempt using helicopters and refueling with C-130s but it failed, in due to the lack of reliability and poor conditions. 8 U.S. servicemen died on that mission. This secret aircraft was going to be used in a second rescue attempt.
No, that was a engineering design fault. Not pilot error this time! An untested hybrid experimental aircraft, configured to pull off the near impossible "Hail Mary" maneuver ever asked of a aircraft this, or any size! Even the famed Lockheed Skunkworks can error in design when the flight envelope is pushed so very severely. But their record of excellence in achieving the utterly extraordinary is unchallenged!
was NOT a design fault, there was an investigative documentary on the history channel regarding this. The pilots fired the rockets WAY too early causing them to stall and drop to the tarmac. Hence the crash..
I will try to see the "H" channel documentary you mention. I admit my info was 10 or more years old, but published in a reputable aerospace magazine. It cited unintended cross rocket ignition caused by the rockets exhaust plumes igniting others therefore defeating the planned ignition sequence and leading to the crash. Thanks for not flaming like so many here, I will withdraw my comment if found to be incorrect.
Rocket motors of that size would not ignite so easily. Because of the size you need to instantly ignite a vary large surface area to build up the pressure required for a sustained burn.
All of those motors ignited IN SEQUENCE which makes me highly doubt your theory
If that was the plan, and then it would require an interlock for something a pilot should know with certainty already nevermind the hottshot they picked for the mission. Better to leave it to the pilots, unfortunately it never worked out. Rather it failed in test than in Iran.
It's not at all clear he fired them. You're making a lot of assumptions from the video when we don't even know how the firing sequence was initiated or how automated it was.
This was no remotely piloted experiment, there were crew aboard this ill fated test of a system to rescue the Iranian held hostages in Terran. I would have loved to see a successful test of this concept, seeing a big c-130 transport come in on a rocket propelled hover landing like a harrier jump jet and landing within 50-75 yards or less on an unprepared surface? Then turn around and take off in that same short distance? WOW! A STOVL C-130 Hercules!
the C-130 is a short field aircraft, allways scarred the hell out of me, we'd climb so steep, this rocket things a hoot, maybe for a younger guy but not me
I have witnessed on a few occasions, the Blue Angels Fat Albert support C-130 expertly piloted, do the shorter than short field LAUNCH turboprops at full throttle shredding the air, 3 rockets on each rear side blazing propelling that transport at an impossible to comprehend angle of attack skyward more like a fighter zoom climb than that of a C-130! I noticed when the rockets ran out the airspeed dropped swiftly and the nose did as well, wringing the very most climb out of time it could muster
If you mean there wasn't anyone inside flying it, yes there were. And you don't land on autopilot.
I think there was a show on the History Channel about them testing the idea out so they could rescue prisoners/hostages in some other country (can't remember where now) by having this land in a soccer stadium where they were being held, turn around, and take back off with the assistance of the rockets.
The rockets fired to soon due to a mechanical problem / glitch of some sort.
apparently this is real.If you post this on 10 videos you will either get asked out or get a kiss. But if you break the chain you will see a little dead girl in your room tonight.
dood your retarded no one died on this crash it was a proto type for a C-130 with jet thrusters to slow its decent to land on a strip of land the size of a soccer field it was a genius idea just the pilot screwed it up but no one died and they decided that that the plain was fine how it was.
as a matter of fact, it wasn't pilot error, it was a rocket failure. The top rockets fired on time, but the bottom rockets fired a simple couple seconds early creating a stall.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Indeed, what a tragic loss of the first prototype vehicle, C130. The valuable aircraft was destroyed instantly, burning at 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, killing all 50 passengers. Sadly, the superheated scrapmetal of the legendary craft could not be salvaged. Even sadder, when the craft violently exploded, all 150 gallons of expensive jet fuel were burned away. Even months later, hundreds mourn the untimely loss of such an iconic airplane. Please remember the C130 in your prayers tonight.
This wasn't pilot error, this was caused due to, as the nariator sais, the horizontal rockets fired early, sence all the pilot did was intiate the firing of the rockets, was a computational error, I think some programer just lost his paycheck :P

dood your retarded no one died on this crash it was a proto type for a C-130 with jet thrusters to slow its decent to land on a strip of land the size of a soccer field it was a genius idea just the pilot screwed it up but no one died and they decided that that the plain was fine how it was.
monnotman 3 years ago
as a matter of fact, it wasn't pilot error, it was a rocket failure. The top rockets fired on time, but the bottom rockets fired a simple couple seconds early creating a stall.

This wasn't pilot error, this was caused due to, as the nariator sais, the horizontal rockets fired early, sence all the pilot did was intiate the firing of the rockets, was a computational error, I think some programer just lost his paycheck :P
viperfan7 3 years ago
They positioned forward-facing rockets to slow down the landing...
Right?
Is that what we're watching here?
Is there at least ONE government "scientist" out there that doesn't have his/her head up his/her ass?
Maybe I'm wrong. I might've missed something.
Maybe I'm the stupid guy in this equation...

I give this crash a 5.3,not very dramatic but the flames were a nice touch, next time experiment more with flamable materials and large crowds. But I did enjoy the wing breaking off variation.

What's wrong with saying"Darn thing blew up when we threw in the switch"? Every engineer in the world says so once a week.
