That Camaro is set up a lot better suspension wise and traction wise ( note the wider rear sticky street tires) and this proves that when you consider all the Variables (Vehicle Weight, Traction and Weight transfer) sometimes a more powerful Car doesn't always mean it's gonna be the quickest. Or, like the other Guy said, maybe the Chevelle was the lower compression 396; hell of a dif between 325 or even 350 vs. 375 hp.

i have a 79 monte carlo with a stock 400 and a 700r4 and it launches way faster than those cars do. its all in the way you set up the drive train. lows gears are a big help when taking off.

@mutherfo Low gears are a big help, but with high horsepower you can have trouble hooking up with out slicks. I'd prefer to run maybe a 3.55 or 3.73 rear gear with street tires to compensate for the wheel spin you most likely would get.

I've got a '78 El Camino with a '73 350 2bbl that's stock except for dual exhaust, glass packs, and a high flow air filter. It's a fun old car that sounds and looks cool but I know at best it might turn a mid-low 16 in the 1/4. I don't go around claiming my car can beat pro-street muscle cars with slicks.
