I remember once reading that this piece of music was the most identifiable piece of music in Canada, after the National Anthem. Sadly, younger people will not remember it quite so fondly as us old farts. Live on in our hearts, Friendly!
Just like Mr. Dressup, I miss the Friendly Giant. The music was so cool. I remember back in the 1980's somebody made a paradoy of the show and I felt it was in very poor taste and I was a teen! The Friendly Giant was our hero. We miss you.
Know whats cool? They were worried the jerome puppet Might get destroyed, Or damaged some how, And.. They could Never made another one like it, They tried and tried but it never came out the same way as the puppet.. Weird xD
I am from the province of Quebec and I remember watching this show as a little boy in the 60s. I did not understand one word, but I loved it. Even if I did not understand English back then, it seems like I understood. Such sweet memories of my childhood. I remember also Mr. Dress Up and Chez Hélène. We were always exposed to both French and English in our house.
The program started in 1953 on Madison, Wisconsin radio station WHA-AM. Shortly thereafter, the show was moved to the UW-Madison's WHA-TV. Kinescopes of these shows were distributed to a few other non-commercial stations, and some of them made it to the CBC headquarters in Toronto. At the invitation of Fred Rainsberry, the head of Children's Television at the CBC, in 1958 Bob Homme moved the show to Canada, where it became a staple show for several generations of young viewers.
"look up,way up". Watched this on channel 9 in Detroit for years back in the 70's. Mr. Dressup also. Canada had some cool stuff for kids and we were fortunate enough to be right across the river to see it.
Ahhh the days of my youth! As soon as that clock struck 10 I'd plant myself infront of the TV and hide the remote just so I could watch Mr.Dress Up, The Friendly Giant, The Polka Dot Door and Sesame Street followed by lunch and a three hour nap!
I love it at rhe beginning when the friendly giant says ''Look Up, Way Up!'' and the theme song starts and the castle doors open slowly! That would have to be my favorite part of ''The Friendly Giant''!
I remember watching this way back in the late 60's early 70's I was only 4 or 5 yrs old at the time! Wow! Thanks for the memories here Bert! I havn't seen this show in almost 40 years!!!!!
Awe you betcha! Please do post it if you can! I use to get so sad whenever the show came to an ending! I loved that cow jumping over the moon! Ah yes, Our more inocent days in life! Wish we could turn the hands of time back to that era in our lives! How did you get these clips? Taped them back then?
I actually taped this when it was being run on a channel about 10 years ago or so. I copied it...it IS the ONLY one I have of the friendly Giant. I also felt sad when that closing theme played...the Giant's flute sounded so sad when he played it. I felt sad when he passed away. Too bad they don't play these shows for kids on YTV or Tele Toon. Would do them some good. Instead of stupid boring cartoons they have now.
Me too. At least 44 years for me. I even forgot about the "friendly giant" written on the doors behind the draw bridge.
And look at the simplicity behind it. We were satisfied with it back then. Sad to say, but I doubt if they would bring it back. It would probably be unsatisfactory because it would lack media rich content people expect to see. You know the bright colours that jump out. Kids dressed in trendy clothes. Technology added to the content.
I hated him even when I was 3 lol! and I already had the sense to know that Mr. Dress Up didn't like woman!
