  • Television also divides the family...both my brother and my father pay more attention to the Television than me as a human being. I've talked to them, and had conversations with them, but their eyes are still glued to the TV.

They watch TV 5 to 6 hours a day, and I've never seen them pick a book up and read...I am saddened because I feel that my family is falling apart, and I've tried so hard to reach out to them :(

We need to educate our children about this before it's too late!

  • I walk into peoples' homes, look around and I think "Where are the books?!.." Almost 2,400 yrs ago, the Greeks were half naked and lucky to just have good paper!! And they were working toward solving theoretical problems of physics, music, arguments in political philosophy...Zeno was working on ground work postulate theory for quantum math.. No technology whatsoever aside from fiber/cloth tech for robes, the pulp works for paper (good stuff was imported!)..and their refined stone architecture.

  • Television is the ultimate mind-managing medium.. Although up until the late 1970's I considered TV benign in terms of it being used as a potential tool or instrument for conveying agenda and organizing perceptions.. And because it literally supplies the visual images, the brain's sense or ability to create it's own version of those images is not utilized or put to work, hense a "path of least resistance" condition occurs..resulting in a preferance for TV (visual) for info.rather than reading..

  • In the book:_Four Arguments For The Elimination Of Television_, the most important fact or point is that, for as much as time and attention TV takes up of our daily lives, yet the research about it's effects are not proportional, miniscule..Another point, although maybe from a different author, is how the main room of the house has similarity to an opium den...-the substance, TV as focus of the room, the room dimmed or dark, distracting outside world shut out, people in hypnotic like trance.....

  • news is garbage. some tv is good but people who watch it hours on end baffle me.

  • Asalamualaykum, What is the the full lecture called?

  • 4 people are addicted to television

  • facebook is the new tv .. the new drug.. way more addictive.. way more dangerous.. way harder to get rid of..

  • i am - the best part is when you seem to get threats to keep mouth shut..

    its a fun addiction(hobby)..

rubbish.. lol there is more if you just learn to look into it.. details.. thats right soldiers

watch salt and it tell you about another assasination..

  • mentioning qufar denegrating muslims; we have examples muslims denegrating muslims... denegrating dead people who ever it is, is bad

  • Religion is also an addiction and when people unplug they also feel symptoms of withdrawal.

  • @mikeyo1234

    Hey Mikekyo1234,

May I just say that I don't think addiction is the word that describes religion? In fact, it can be really easy for people to stop following it because a lot of the things it prohibits people to do seem to be fun and exciting...or at least a lot more than praying.

I know that different people follow religion due to different reasons, like some people are just forced to by their parents, etc, but I think most don't follow it because they're addicted to it.

  • @mikeyo1234

And in terms of Islam in specific, I believe that it actually promotes people to have self-control and tries to prevent people from being addicted to anything. Some examples of promoting self-control: Fasting (controlling one's hunger and thirst), prohibiting alcohol (controlling one's thoughts, as alcohol can make you drunk) and music (controlling one's body, as music can make you want to tap and dance).

  • @mikeyo1234

I hope you didn't mind me saying my opinion as you have a total right to yours but I hope this helps you re-consider what religion truly is.

    Regards and Happy Holidays!

  • Photo Journalists are not dogs! If they didnt do their jobs atrocities could go unnoticed. They bring the worlds attention to things that matter.

  • @erkziltonz

I must agree with you that if it wasn't for the pictures, a lot of us would miss the reality and it's not the same reading about it.

But I'm sure you'd agree with how desensitized the media has become and how the sense of privacy is so ignored. Personally I do think that it is disrespectful to the dead for taking their pictures and making videos showing them like that. I think it's just a question of considering the advantages and disadvantages...

  • @erkziltonz

We've just got to think whether it's really worth it to show someone dead through mass media (rather than to perhaps write about it) to have more awareness while risking to make it the norm to show the injured and dead people and making people desensitized, more tolerant, and when they move on, making them feel guilty if they choose not to do anything about it.

A debatable question indeed but I just wanted to express my view as well.

  • MashAllah, brilliant little clip/reminder

  • i like lindsay lohan

  • Where can I find the full lecture of this?

    Thanks in advance!

    Salam alikoum

  • Fortunately I rarely watch TV now. Even when I do watch TV, I just watch Discovery channel and NGC, stuff about science, technology and all.

Used to watch news before but then I realised its all B.S. propaganda and don't watch that anymore either.

I'm starting to read more now once again. Internet seems to be taking a big chunk of my life now. Guess it has taken over as a TV substitute. But then I wouldn't have known about Hamza Yusuf if it wasn't for the internet!!

  • lol @ plugin drug. The title says it all.

  • 2:23, Umm Im not a dog over caucuses, Im a man trying to show the world what the hell is going on, and by doing so I'm destroying part of my sanity just to show the world what the fuck is going on, So once more I have a heart you fucker, and a mind that lives with every image I have ever taken

  • What did he say at 2:18 "dogs over caucuses"? Did I got this right? Please, can someone explain it to me?

  • @Batyralp dogs over carcasses

  • @chinosvoice

thank you very much....barak'Allahu feek :)

  • wa feeka baraka ya akhi :)

  • I wonder why do I feel sorry for the kuffar?

May be they are just stupid.

The secular extremists need to take their secular dogma and re-evaluate their stupidness or go home and cry or somethin. Don't hate.

  • The most detrimental hypnotic affect on human beings, salahudeen, is religious dogma, and this is absolute certainty.

  • @wodun9 You are bigoted and presumptuous to make such a statement about me. My comments had nothing to do with religion, so your response to my statement has no relevance whatsoever. It shows your lack of understaning and intelligence that you would use stereotypic, ad hominem, and scurrilous language as a mere insult rather having the capacity to formulate intelligent commentary.

  • Are you so naive...even you can't be so obtuse ...You are bigoted and presumptuous ....

    and you're not?????

  • @salahudeenabduladl

What statement in particular did I make ABOUT you, salad? You pride yourself on your knowledge of the English language but can't even interpret the meaning of a simple sentence. So who's insulting who?

  • @wodun9 As for religion, even you can't be so obtuse as to consider the religious motivations of Martin Luther King, Jr., Mahatma Ghandi, and Mother Theresa as having been misguided. Or the incredible historical civilizing effects of Islam (throughout Africa, Asia, and parts of Europe), Confucianism and Taoism (in China), Buddhism and Shintoism (in Japan). You are truly uneducated (or miseducated) if you are not aware of the historic relevance of religion to human civilizations.

  • @wodun9 Also, when you say "dogma." Are you so naive as to think that this term can only be applied to religious beliefs. Fascists and demagogues, of all stripes, have resorted to dogmatic rhetoric, that is not to be challenged or debated. Even, science can be dogmatic, at times, in its absolutism, debarring furtherance of knowledge. This is then called pseudo-science. The white supremacist so-called scientific eugenics movement, of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, is a case in point.

  • ms21k1986

    i'm sorry i don't know.

  • pls whats the title of this lecture?

  • TV is what you make of it. You can find all the negatives you like to present as a deterrent, but there are just as many positives. The choice is yours, isn't it.

  • @eccomiqui8 No. Actually the technology of TV does emit waves that have a hypnotic effect and tend to alter brain chemistry with continuous, protracted viewing. So, despite the the content of TV programming, it does have a deleterious effect on the human brain. Read any book you can find on the biopsychology and effects of TV viewing. Also, read Gerry Mander's book and comments about TV and its role as a tool of mind control and manipulation of public opinion.

  • Well, Abdullah, to each their own delusions....

  • @eccomiqui8 Another ignorant bigot. You're fooling yourself if you believe that your approach to promoting atheism is anything but "religious." Rule of Thumb is: "Whatever you do religiously 'is' your religion." Just think of the fanatical atheist, Madalyn Murray O'Hair. So you are the one who is delusional and should get off the soap box. Anyway, your bigoted reference to "Abdullah" has no relevance whatsoever--to my initial comment about the influence of TV. YOU'RE EXPOSED AS A VILE BIGOT.

  • @eccomiqui8 You don't need to believe in God to be a "fanatic." Aren't the white supremacists fanatical about their supposed racial superiority. This type of fanaticism has been wreaking havoc throughout the world for centuries as Europeans, under the banner of "White Man's Burden," colonized, raped, and pillaged non white peoples and their lands. Thus I will correct you by stating that, yes, you should take issue with fanaticism, in all its manifestations. But first look in the mirror.

  • @eccomiqui8

Absolutely, I agree with you about it being our choice at the end of the day. It's just some people find it hard to make the right choice and thus, end up being addicted.

There are a lot of great, informative shows on TV that you can choose to watch and rule out the useless ones, but I don't know if there are just as many positives as the negatives. I think the balance is tilted more towards the harm for the general population despite TV's potential.

  • @eccomiqui8

And regarding what the Shaykh is talking about, he also stresses on how reading is much better than watching TV (again for the general population) and I think that we can all agree about.

Hopefully I haven't sounded disrespectful in any way.

    Kind regards :)

  • A very well-articulated argument against television. I appreciated Hanson's promoting the books of Neil Postman, Jerry Mander and Marie Winn, all of which were instrumental in my own awakening to the dangers of the tube and to the agendas of those who control programming. I especially agree with his saying the hearts are dead of those who can watch dead bodies on TV and then eat dinner. TV is a desensitizing medium intent on selling us things (goods, ideas). Thank you for posting this message.

  • I honestly watch television about 4 or 5 hours a week. I think that's pretty good for this day and age. I dislike most of what's on TV so i try to stay away.

  • @CReedProductions

what are you watching during those 5 hours?

  • you could choose what you wanna read or watch from the internet, both TV and internet are an addiction materials, but internet is a two sided coin, it could be either good or bad, but i conseder TV as one sided coin, because we don't choose what we wanna watch, the media does, but the internet on people's hands which is a good thing. thank you.

  • You claim to be living in the U.S. so you have more than 1 channel available to you. And not just more than 1. So you DO get to choose. There's not just garbage on TV but quite a number educational programmes.

  • regarding Hamza's definition of addiction "something you do in a daily base", my advice to u is to not look at the words, focus on the content on the subject. thank you.

  • what about praying? IS that an addiction?

  • @musty911

    COM'ON! Stop being stupid.

I could say the same thing about SLEEPING? What about sleeping? What about EATING (every day)?

    And what about PRAYING?

These are things we NEED to sustain ourselves and stay alive?

    Duh...

  • what about the internet? Which is worst, tv or the net?

  • I think the tv cause you dont choose what you want to see...

  • couldn't agree more ..

  • Television is now synonymous with satellite viewing.

So yes, television is Bull Shit and people should stop utilising Bull Shit

  • IN THE ABSENCE OF THE SACRED BY: JERRY MANDER read this book , brothers and sisters.

this brother is right on point

  • are we addicted!

  • I think it is obviously, what I mean.

  • ok.....

  • Life is too short, to waste the time with watching TV. There are so many things what a human beeing can do (of course halal) in this live. Don't waste it for TV.

  • Very true

Jazak Allahu kHair (May Allah Give you Good)

  • Comment removed

  • Get rid of the television.

  • I turned my tv off years ago, thanks God! Television insults my intelligence. And what parades as "news" are either full out LIES,or DISINFORMATION,or simply entertainment masquerading as "News". All other show's on TV are called "Programs" for a REASON,it programs your mind to they're way of thinking and behaving.Of how you "should" live your life&TV is the most dangerous propaganda tool and mind control known to man.

  • herehere

It is such a powerful tool

we know that the tele puts your brain in a sleep state while bombarding you / programing you

I always noticed that a tele that is ON is very hard to ignore

    turn off the light bulb

  • Yep. Mine is off, unplugged and covered under a blanket. I just gotta talk the wife into getting it out of the house altogether.I want that satellite OFF the roof of my house, and that tv OUT.She's having a harder time than I in making that final step. She wants to keep it around "just in case",but she doesn't watch it anymore either now, thank God.

  • @FREEW0RLD2012 Agreed.....I heard that an avid reader will only read between 1-2000 books in a lifetime. I threw my TV out about 18 yrs ago and I am way past that number already. We now KNOW that the so called News is somebody (the savvy amongst of knows of whom I am talking) else agenda. Yes of course there are some very good TV programs but on balance my own opinion is that it's not worth it. Many Thanx

  • Really reallygreat advices..and I agree with him

He just said important ideas in few minutes!

I liked the idea of not exposing the dead Muslims..it makes the heart dead in the end!

As our children play these games which contribute in such a thing

I am not addicted to TV..but I am addicted to the internet, and I hate that!
