  • I can't conceive a song like this ever getting to number 1 again. :-(

  • A little bit of me died inside when I saw James and Nicky rubbing shoulders with Peter Jones on Saturday Kitchen. We're all bourgeois now.

  • This song makes me want to attempt a coup de tat and declare Great Britain a Socialist Republic. ;-)

Sick of not being able to afford my own house, in and out of work for the last 2 years, sick of 'celebraties' earning a fortune for bugger all whilst there are good honest hard working people frightened to death of losing their homes and jobs, uni fee's are a disgrace at £9000 p.a. and no job at the end of it.

  • Very punk, similar to Cockney Reject's, Sex Pistol's, Nirvana and other various punk act's out there. Would not be out of place on a footy hooligan film lol

  • I miss anger like this in songs. Everything now is horribly self-absorbed, or is entirely concentrated on material gain

  • Pretty proud of the boys being the first number one of this Millennium and pretty proud of the general public at that time for getting this beast of a tune to number one. Good work all round!

  • Is that Noam Chomsky in the beginning?

  • @Gurra88 yes

  • Hardly their last truly great song. Thought Journal for Plague Lovers had some great songs, I'm particularly partial to All is vanity and Virgina Epileptic State Colony.

  • I think this is the finest number one ever made.

  • This song knocked westlife off the top spot to be the first number 1 of the new millenium.... great tune and all the better for beating westlife :)

  • WHY and i must repeat WHY? 4 fu?!ing dislike's!!!??? WHY? can ANYONE answer that?

  • And of course it went to number one, good call!

  • Now this is a number one record that deserved to be a number one.

  • One of their heavier moment's.. combining Sex Pistol's and Nirvana for that ultimate punk rock song. Bordering toward's heavy metal in the chorus.

  • was this the last truly great Manic's song? please discuss.

  • @saneman32 Oh ok, if you want a discussion. I like the music they've made since this song, but I suppose nothing they have done since this song has been as good as this song is... if that makes any sense.

  • @Boxyno1

True, although i've liked the music they have made since this. this is the last song they made that has made me turn it up loud and really enjoy like I used to with there earlier work.

  • @Boxyno1

That's the point I was trying to make. Yes they have made good music since this song, but nothing has matched this song.

  • @saneman32 Oh please. Journal for Plague Lovers is by far one of their best albums!

  • @saneman32

Ah there's been lots of good songs from them since. Nothing like they used to be though. No knocking them though. Gimme Motorcycle Emptiness any day

  • @saneman32 until journal for plague lovers, i think jackie collins existential question time is on par with this!

    just my opinion of course

  • @saneman32 No. "The love of Richard Nixon", "There by the grace of god", "Some kind of nothingness", "Hazleton avenue", "Williams last words" and many more.

  • @saneman32 I quite like found that soul, but this is the last one that has that sense of rage and protest abut it, yeah.

  • @saneman32 whoa, bag lady, sorry, cant ignore it.

  • @saneman32 their Send Away the Tigers album is fullfilled with this kind of sound/energy/felling, so no.

  • Was this the last truly great Manic's song?

  • great stuff

  • Arguing about chart positions on a Manics video ? Weird.

  • It's longevity that counts in music. Anyone can have a No.1 really. But not many bands make singles & albums that stick around the charts for months or years.

  • I remember when this single was officially announced as No.1 on Radio 1's 'Top 40' show! I believe it was the 1st No.1 of the century, which was a perfect fitting for the nature of the song. It was one of the more decent No.1s of the last decade. It was such a breath of fresh air, after Westlife's domination of the poll position! Too bad that whore, airhead Britney Spears knocked it off with 'Born To Make You Happy' after 1 week! Shame! But to be honest, No.1s don't really matter. It's longevi

  • Fucking love this song, probably the best Manics' track since the Richey era.

  • Cn you beleive Manics only had 2 number one singles in UK? But those two songs were in my opinion 2of the best singles ever to reach number 1. Brilliant

  • Was always going to be number one, no doubt about that! and that chorus.. just one of the best there has ever been. Over eleven year's old now! and has become a piece of welsh history.. 10/10

  • ah man cant stand patronising same old thing over and over again marxists

  • Empty left wing populist rubbish, coming from a Manics fan.

  • @swanseajackwales tbh the lyrics seem to be more like condeming their critics. But either way, fuck you :)

  • Either this is a really low quality audio, or the song isn't as good as I thought it would be.

  • brilliant

  • no video or promotion and it STILL got to number one!!

1st single I ever bought, hearing them play this at the millenium staduim is still the best moment of my life!! :)

  • i have this on 10" vinyl,mint condition never played.had it 10 yrs...any offers on a price for sale

  • should this be the public's song against the new world order , the tyranny of the private central bank , built to enslave us all .

  • one of the greatest songs to ever reach #1 in the UK singles chart.

    manics forever!

  • @jazzmanEE Spot on, and possibly one of the last great ones I can remember

  • @jazzmanEE 2 fuckin right m8 SMASH THE CASH DEATH TO CAPITALISM!!!!

  • Lets start a campaign on facebook this back to no 1 on the 10th anniversary of the single. It would be the first time a song has returned to no 1 only the 10th anniversary after it's release. The only other songs I know of to return to the top are Queen 'Bohemain Rhapsody and George Harrison 'My Sweet Lord'

  • im in

  • @ajcfc1983 mee to

  • @ajcfc1983

If you get it going and I'll force everyone to buy it.

  • @ajcfc1983 Nah, fuck that. Let's get Motown Junk to Number 1.

  • I think you'll find that Westlife was number 1 for christmas 99, and carried on to be number 1 into January 2000.

The info bit of this video clearly states that this was the first NEW number 1 of this millenium

  • @suspectVandal Yeah that's exactly what I said word for word, why the attitude? Especially when you're repeating exactly what I said.

  • @Boxyno1 I guess he misunderstood your comment as an attack on his description of the video... it's kinda funny how he blows up. :)

  • @Boxyno1 Erm, the millenium began on Jan 1st 2001, FYI..... so both of you failed.

  • @pssecho No, you just failed because the millenium started 2000. Thats what they call an Epic Fail my friend.

  • @SuperMegabar My friend, year 1 - 1000 would count only 999 years, so that's why a first millenium counted from 1 - 1001, second from 1001 - 2001, and third 2001-and counting....

so THAT's what they call a double-back-flip-inside-out-back-around-again EPIC FAIL, my friend :)

  • @pssecho No. go onto Wikipedia and type in Millennium and you will see that you're wrong.

  • @SuperMegabar as a matter of fact Wikipedia is not yet determined whether to start counting with 0 or with 1, but since the dawn of man we've always started counting with 1 just so you can always tell how many "apples" are there in a sack or whatever the case you wanna come up with. For example if you count like this 0, 1, 2, 3 and came to a conclusion you have only 3 items, you'd fail big time. So go on now, shoo shoo!

  • @pssecho Exacly. its undeterminded. So why act like such a dick. Anyway, im done with arguing with people over youtube.

  • till the manics knocked them off

  • A Chomsky quote at the beginning will make any song good.

  • I NEED TO BE RESTRAINED!!!! THIS IS FACKIN ORGASMIC!!!

...might have overdued that one, but Daaaaamn! this is Bi-utiful!

  • TUUUUUUUUUUUNNNNNNNNNNEE

  • Maybe they should do Masses against the classes part two perhaps..? would take some doing in equaling this though. Saying that the Manic's are clearly capable of rising to that challenge.. James are you reading this?

  • Seeing them tomorrow!

  • grrr *jealous*

  • AWESOME!

  • brilliant!

  • best number one single ever

  • what a tune and a very upbeat one for a change from the manic's! stunning vocal's from james as usual. a well deserved number one for them. 10/10

  • REVOLUTION!!!!!

  • ...

  • The first single to reach number 1 in the 21st Century = FACT

  • Quality. This did not appear on Know Your Enemy but coupled with the Album and the fact that they performed in Cuba as soon as the Manics went to America the were under surveillance by the F.B.I.!!. Could only happen in America

  • There best song and the best number 1 of this decade. Saying that im not a big fan but its a cracking song!

  • The MSP are the best thing to come out of Wales (apart from the roads lol) ;-))

  • cheese on toast!

  • its def a tune lol. feel good song. u can imagine driving down an american highway with a harley davidson on a film set with this playing in the background lol.. ok maybe its just me ha hah a....

but they are welsh ;) woop woop cymraeg am byth!

  • One of the few deserved number 1s
