@Dorisequador … There are so many ways of doing things in the garden it’s hard to go wrong. I try to keep it as simple as it really is no gimmicks. Glad you enjoy the vids……Donald
@carlocol2 … Will most times use a 50-50 mix. If I’m adding worm castings maybe 1/3 of each. I’ll also add perlite to keep it from compacting. No fertilizer to the mix. Unless it’s a real poor starter mix very seldom will I use fertilizer once the seedlings are up. Tomatoes should be started 6-8 weeks before planting. Move your seedlings into the sun as soon as they break the top of the soil or they will get leggy…….Donald
WOW! I could learn so much from you, I have been trying to grow from seed for two seasons now, I have had no luck what so ever, I buy my plants and have no trouble growing Tomatoe, cucumber, capsicum, silverbeet, celery, sweet corn, pumpkin but I would love to be able to grow from seed, I am going to keep trying...thank you so much for posting this video.

Thanks for mentioning the spacing out of the planting times - I'll be making my first attempt at gardening this year and probably wouldn't have thought to do that.
Thanks for mentioning the spacing out of the plantings - I'll be making my first attempt at gardening this year and probably wouldn't have thought to do that.
. The plants have stood temps of 3 degrees outside! The plants look like they froze but as the sun comes out they raise thier heads and by nightime they look very nice.
We are growing lettuce, spinach, carrots, kolarabi, beets, radish, swiss chard, collard greens, broccali, cauliflower and cilantro! We aren't sure that we will be able to get heads on the broccali, cauliflower and kolarbi but even if we don't we can eat the leaves or feed em to the rabbits. Today it is 34 degrees outside with snow on the ground and 20-30 degrees warmer in the greenhouse
When the weather turns 60 outside we will start tilling the ground in the greenhouse so that we can pick it up with a shovel and move it wherever we feel we need it! In the meanwhile we are growing vegetables in pots which we have set on top of the rabbit cages!
As I sit in my TV room with seeds to the left of me, seeds to the right and seeds in the freezer as well as in my five drawer tool box I anxiously await the dawning of Spring! This last fall I put up two greenhouse at $100 and $300 respectively and placed my 50 cages of rabbits inside to create a little compost for me. We have laid down newspapers and covered them lightly with Starbucks Gardengrounds and a littlle straw and leaves that we picked up this last fall!
Don I like to place my container with the pots in it on top of a heating pad or on top of the refrigerator! If you are in a cooler climate this will help the seeds germinate earlier and form a better root system!
Thank you so much for the information. People like me who are "quasi-gardeners" each spring don't have the actual complete info. This is the first year I've tried starting from seed, and so far, so good. But just seeing how you pack the pots to the top before adding seeds and using the pencil is a BIG help!

Hey cool video.I started a small garden in my yard.Watermelon, pepper, eggplant, tomato, black beans, cantaloupe. Its (O.K.)for my first try.
I had to move the watermelon down hill to wetter ground; they were being lazy.I just dug holes about a coffee can in size and filled with your mix then placed the seedlings in.After the harvest the sod can cover the hole back over.We have a tourist company that gives their manure to the public. I mixed it with the dirt from the holes and backfilled.

can you re plant the ones you took out into new pots i done some about 3 weeks ago and there up. Is lettuce, broccali the same to can i re pot them. ive got about 50 tomatoes plants just need help potting some sweet peppers i tryed but they didnt come up
@TheMcginn1 ... about the only vegetable I would repot is tomatoes cause you can just stick them in soil and they'll grow. Peppers need a soil temp of around 80 degrees to sprout....... Donald
@webcajun Hello im starting some spring flowers inside using a small greenhouse dome container (also im in an apartment with not a lot of sunlight around me and i was wondering when they start to sprout should i try to use an artificial light? if so what kind is cheapest and more effective? and also should i remove them from the dome when they sprout of is it safe to put it in the light. hope this is part of your expertise. thanks
@NPwrestler103 ... I don't use lights just natural sunlight. Join the forum on the web site and ask your question there. Lots of good people there that can help....... Donald
I'm starting everything in an incubator, but the temp won't go any lower than 80 degrees. I seeded 10 days ago. My basil, broccoli, peas, beans, melons, and hibiscus are all doing very well, about to go to pots. My toms haven't started yet, not have the peppers - Lots of varieties. Do you think 80 deg is too high for pepper and tom germination?
@everythingeco ... 80 is just right for the peppers. Tomatoes don't really need that high of a soil temp to germinate but they should be OK. Tomatoes usually germinate in about a week or less........... Donald
I started my seeds indoor with a grow light last Sunday and I now have some seedlings. I'm concerned that my window doesnt provide enough sunlight and its too cold for me to move them outside. Can I keep them under the lights or do I have another option?
Donald, you are so helpful and come across as such a nice person. You should have your own TV show!! :) Hope you have a productive season this year! God bless you & your family! :)
sorry i dont agree. I nature there are no do's or don'ts and a plant will adapt to just about any conditions. No offence but they let retards germinate seeds without fail
I'm growing 200 slow growing Pinyon pines from seeds indoors with grow lights. Will plant on my mountain lot next Fall. PHX, AZ is TOO HOT in Summer, so they will stay inside. Looking great now!
I want to learn how to do some growing of Vegetables in my backyard and was wondering where do i start. Do you have any programs or tips or something i can follow ?
I would suggest joining the forum on the web site. We have at least one other fellow from Australia that could give you plenty advice since your seasons are different than down here. We called him Tunaman....... Donald
Thank you for taking the time to go over everything step by step, best planting videos I've seen on here yet, I can really understand what to do and you're not obnoxious and annoying like some of the others are, :) , you just give the info, much much appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to put these videos on here for the rest of us. God bless.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Will have an in depth DVD coming out soon that covers it all including several problems you can run into and how to solve them. Thanks....... Donald
Hey... I really love your videos, they have honestly helped me out more than other videos on youtube, Great hints and tips,, easy to understand unlike some people who get nervous on camera and hesitate a bit, And you seem to have a great deal of knowlage in Gardening, Please keep the videos coming! :)
Aint that right buddy lol.. I'm a 17 year old country kid myself and I garden more than just a hobby, looking to start maybe a business and make a profit from my harvests, but I look up to these videos when I need a little extra help, Once again ... I greatly appreciate it
Or you could probably use Ladybugs, You can usually get them at any pet shop or anywhere online, they will ship them right to your door,, Thats what I did, and they took care of the entire problem in my greenhouse, Thay do work wonders in a garden
I've got two good sized aquariums and I find if I water the plants using water from the fish tanks, they do better than any commercial fertilizer that I've tried. When I siphon the gravel out to clean out the crud from the bottom of the tank, that water goes to my plants as well and they love it.
I guess its kinda like using natural water from a pond as opposed to just tap water which has nothing to offer really...
Yes, I've noticed that no amount of watering the grass and flowers in the back yard using tap water makes them spring into action the next day like a rain fall. I guess rain water collects nutrients on the way down. Anyway I wanted to say great vids :)
Rain water is SOFT water and not treated with chlorine and fluorides. There is no substitute for it. Remember it comes from God's water district. Pure and perfect.
I want to dry out my own tomato seeds for next year, rather than buy them again. Got any tips anyone ? I heard you could put the jelly like soft tomato seeds into a glass of water
Hey Tom ... Probably the hardest thing about starting your own seeds is learning "how much to water". I kill more seedlings because of that than any other reason. I use 2 1/2 inch pots almost 100% of the time......... Donald
Go online and get a copy of a "Planting Guide" for your area. There is all kinds of good information in there. Im in Zone 8 which is a long way from Alaska. Your seedlings should be started 6-8 weeks before planting them in the garden...... Donald
SO glad I found this. Thanks for taking the time to make it! I was lost wandering the internet trying to find a good demonstration and then it dawned on me. YOUTUBE! I'm glad I found a way to actually SEE the process. Thanks a ton! I'm gonna check out all your videos as the planting season finally hits!
I don't know where you live, but I live in IL and it's just about time to start seeds. I was thinking of stating seeds the 3rd week of March. What do you think? Ever start corn inside? Great video!
As a rule you start seeds 6-8 weeks before your last frost date. Corn is planted directly into the garden not started in flats or pots. Not sure how well corn would do when transplanted...... Donald
I like your videos! I start my tomatoes and cucumbers indoors but always find that they stem too tall and they fall to the side. They are usually next to the window, but I think maybe it is just not enough light. Do you think it is light or soil?
If I had to bet it would be not enough light. Had to close the door on my shop a couple of days because of high winds and some of my seedlings started doing the same thing...... Donald
I agree with webcajun, leggy plants means not enough light. The plants are reaching for the light. If you go to Home Depot you can find a 48 inch Lithonia lightening system for 10 bucks, it holds 2 40 watt fluorescent bulbs and ($7 for the pair). Buy some extra chain and some extra S hooks and you can set this system up almost anywhere. Place the lights about 2 inches from the seedlings, adjust height with books if you need to.
Hi, I am somewhat of a newbie at indoor planting and planting over all, but I have recently bought some radish seeds and a miniature greenhouse. I was wondering if it was okay to leave the soon to germinate seeds inside of the mini greenhouse or if it would be better to leave them out.
Also, Is it okay to use a lamp instead of putting it near a sunny window?
Two of the things that help germinate seeds are heat and moisture. Take those two away by storing your seeds in a cool dry place. Many use grow lights with success, I prefer natural sunlight...... Donald
Oh, this is wonderful!!! I want to start seeds, I was confused, and now this video has me motivated and feeling confident. Thanks.

Hi Donald, and greetings from Sydney Australia! I very much enjoy your videos. I have a few questions about this one:
- what proportions of potting mix and compost do you use?
- do you add any fertiliser to the mix?
- after the seedlings come up, do you fertilize them e.g. with a liquid fertilizer?
- for tomatoes, how long should I wait (what size seedling) before planting out?
- should seedlings be moved into the sun as soon as they come up - or leave them indoors for a few more days?

I started my seeds indoor with a grow light last Sunday and I now have some seedlings. I'm concerned that my window doesnt provide enough sunlight and its too cold for me to move them outside. Can I keep them under the lights or do I have another option?
MamaChamp4 1 year ago
IMHO ... Sunlight is the best. If you do leave them under the grow lights keep the lights as close to the little plants as possible........... Donald

Those new to starting their own seed can make simple mistakes like; Too much water, planting too deep, not enough light are just a few....... Donald
webcajun 2 years ago
sorry i dont agree. I nature there are no do's or don'ts and a plant will adapt to just about any conditions. No offence but they let retards germinate seeds without fail
Lunarlaserranging 2 years ago
Well thats just not true...
Try germinating something other then a pea. asshole.

Donald

Aint that right buddy lol.. I'm a 17 year old country kid myself and I garden more than just a hobby, looking to start maybe a business and make a profit from my harvests, but I look up to these videos when I need a little extra help, Once again ... I greatly appreciate it
iwuvshexshy 2 years ago 2
Or you could probably use Ladybugs, You can usually get them at any pet shop or anywhere online, they will ship them right to your door,, Thats what I did, and they took care of the entire problem in my greenhouse, Thay do work wonders in a garden
iwuvshexshy 2 years ago
I've got two good sized aquariums and I find if I water the plants using water from the fish tanks, they do better than any commercial fertilizer that I've tried. When I siphon the gravel out to clean out the crud from the bottom of the tank, that water goes to my plants as well and they love it.
I guess its kinda like using natural water from a pond as opposed to just tap water which has nothing to offer really...
svtcontour 2 years ago
I guess it's like the difference between tap water and a good rain. Plants seem to prefer the rain....... Donald
webcajun 2 years ago
Yes, I've noticed that no amount of watering the grass and flowers in the back yard using tap water makes them spring into action the next day like a rain fall. I guess rain water collects nutrients on the way down. Anyway I wanted to say great vids :)
svtcontour 2 years ago
Rain water is SOFT water and not treated with chlorine and fluorides. There is no substitute for it. Remember it comes from God's water district. Pure and perfect.

I want to dry out my own tomato seeds for next year, rather than buy them again. Got any tips anyone ? I heard you could put the jelly like soft tomato seeds into a glass of water
and just let them dry out for 2-3 weeks ?!

Check out the video in my favorites on "Saving tomato seeds". I tried it and it works great........ Donald

Another nice Video, thanks Donald. I used Burpee planting pots this year. they were too small I think... 1/2 my pepper plants died. -Tom
tejava 2 years ago
Hey Tom ... Probably the hardest thing about starting your own seeds is learning "how much to water". I kill more seedlings because of that than any other reason. I use 2 1/2 inch pots almost 100% of the time......... Donald

Great video. This might be a silly question but Its getting in 40's here in alaska, do you suggest I start my seedlings now or wait till may?
Bparkeraw 2 years ago
Go online and get a copy of a "Planting Guide" for your area. There is all kinds of good information in there. Im in Zone 8 which is a long way from Alaska. Your seedlings should be started 6-8 weeks before planting them in the garden...... Donald

I don't know where you live, but I live in IL and it's just about time to start seeds. I was thinking of stating seeds the 3rd week of March. What do you think? Ever start corn inside? Great video!
jlafary 2 years ago
As a rule you start seeds 6-8 weeks before your last frost date. Corn is planted directly into the garden not started in flats or pots. Not sure how well corn would do when transplanted...... Donald

I like your videos! I start my tomatoes and cucumbers indoors but always find that they stem too tall and they fall to the side. They are usually next to the window, but I think maybe it is just not enough light. Do you think it is light or soil?
taviyo 3 years ago
If I had to bet it would be not enough light. Had to close the door on my shop a couple of days because of high winds and some of my seedlings started doing the same thing...... Donald
webcajun 3 years ago

Also, Is it okay to use a lamp instead of putting it near a sunny window?
nolancole1994 3 years ago
Two of the things that help germinate seeds are heat and moisture. Take those two away by storing your seeds in a cool dry place. Many use grow lights with success, I prefer natural sunlight...... Donald
