I'd recommend working all your major muscle groups, not just the traps. But to answer your question, YES regular strength training exercise will help with the pain you are feeling.
Lee-Does it matter which trap exercise you do? If you do dumbbells or the calf builder it is the same movement so why do them both? Also how many reps and sets do you do for your routine? Do you include these on back day or on shoulder day?

Trust me you'll never get "Too Big". The risk of building too much muscle is about the same as making too much money, it just aint going to happen. And if you were so lucky as to build too much muscle, just stop training and you'll lose it again :-)

i also have trouble with barbell shrugs from behind so i use cables, take a few steps forward which really puts the emphasis on the traps, although i am limited o the weight, you can really load the barbell up put with the cables the machine only goes up to 60kg each side so 120kg in total...
I use the calf machine for Traps, i think its fantastic but i do get some strange looks from people as they think i'm using it wrong but i can say it is great for traps
Start working out the weak arm first then use same wieghts and same reps on the stronger arm. That way the weaker arm well catch up to the stronger arm.

I think it could certainly help, but if you are not training regularly now I'd suggest checking with a physiotherapist first. They can help you with specific moves for your situation.

These exercises are good for building muscle, but to lose fat you need to focus on diet and cardio in addition to weight training workouts like these.

i'm no bodybuilder, but i train a lot for rugby, and have been asked if i am on steroids a few times (i'm 100% natural). the thing to do to get huge traps is powercleans followed by a drop set x4. of course, u cannot immerse yourself right into the deep end and will have to build up basic strength before commencing to use cleans. now, healthy diet, 5 meals a day, protein, train your traps in a compound exercise twice a week, with progressive overloading; et viola, big traps, very satisfying.

@cutie124u No. Spot fat reduction doesn't exist. As the uploader said, focus on nutrition to lower your body fat.

@cutie124u If you have a lot of upper back fat check your cortisol levels as it could be a symptom of Cushings syndrome.

i'm no bodybuilder, but i train a lot for rugby, and have been asked if i am on steroids a few times (i'm 100% natural). the thing to do to get huge traps is powercleans followed by a drop set x4. of course, u cannot immerse yourself right into the deep end and will have to build up basic strength before commencing to use cleans. now, healthy diet, 5 meals a day, protein, train your traps in a compound exercise twice a week, with progressive overloading; et viola, big traps, very satisfying.

Yes, proper nutrition is critical for getting in shape. And that includes consuming a high protein diet.

@leemhayward i see, but often nutritionists tell us to keep the carbs, protein, and vitamin pyramid triangular upward. I understand that to build muscle one needs to consume protein but (being a well into weight training) what would you advise one eats? can you give a more comprehensive breakdown, say, a daily diet plan for beginner?

I believe another variation of the rope upright row would be low row pulley to neck am i correct? I use that exercise alot when i work out traps.

Hey great bid, I needed some variation in my trapezius workouts and I'm looking forward to the rope upright, I used to do it with an EZ bar but that still wasn't effective at reducing the strain on my wrists but rope looks like it fits my needs..... By the way you look like Van Damm lol I love his movies
