Fault with the hydraulic governor was traced to a relief valve stuck open, this has now been fixed. This video was the first time the engine had been run for a number of years so given that the valve was the only thing wring, not too bad.
in uk it is our pm BROWN THE CLOWN and is party new labour who is causing us trouble he does not like trucks or tractors they are going to tax us $1000 to own old trators all best from yorkshire
I really wonder why they don't produce these kind of engines for small cars, as they should be much more efficient than regular four stroke diesels...
Daihatsu were developing a 1 litre 2 stroke diesel triple in 2002 for the Sirion, but I've heard no more. It was both supercharged & turbocharged, & could undercut Euro 4 emission standards. It developed 60bhp @ 3500, & 114 ft/lbs of torque @ 2200. Later, they developed a 2 cylinder version of 660cc which developed 50 bhp @3500, & 95 ft/lbs @ 1500 rpm. Then another 2 cylinder 2 stroke of 1.2 litres & 87bhp & 177 ft/lbs in 2006 I believe, which was to be fitted to their little 4 wheel drive car.
The Foden marque is no more. The last few years of production were built at the DAF, ex Leyland works in Lancashire. To all intents they were pretty much just a badge. Production ended in july 2006.
The other engine synonymous with Foden for many years was the Gardner. In the 80s & 90s the Rolls Royce Eagle was also a popular unit in the tractor units.
They made thier own engines way back in the late forties early fifties up til the late sixties, The reason why my old man is deaf in his left ear, hehe.
No! foden have been buying in their engines for years! mostly they used Cummins and Cat (plus another make that i cannot remember) during the 1980s-90s i'm not to up to date on the modern stuff though.
I know ERF used the 60 series Detroit Diesel but i never thought Foden fitted them. Foden used Gardner, Cummins, Rolls Royce Eagle in tractor units and Perkins in the lighter rigids like skiploaders and dustbin carts.Foden was considered a "Bosses motor" because most of them were awful to drive but were nigh on indestructable it was in the late eighties and early nineties when Paccar bought them that big Caterpillar engines were fitted making them an overnight hit with drivers
i love the 2 stroke diesel sound this one sounds different than the detroits nice engine tho

I like the sound of those old two strokes. The Foden does have a different sound than Detroit 6-71.

This Foden 2 stroke seems rather unstable on starting.

Their emissions can't keep up with EPA standards.

Where can I get one !! Would sound great in my Octy ;)
I remember the unique sound of Foden lorries from when I was a kid, and this is obv. the reason why. Just like a Napier Deltic or an EMD 645 !!

This is not a Detroit. Foden made their own 2 stroke Diesels.

@Kokoots
do u know if the layout is the same as detroit? ie exhaust valves and inlet ports?
tpvalley 7 months ago
@tpvalley Yes they was the same as Detroit, in that respect. Two strokes were never popular here in the UK.
