Scalping didn't exist at the time of the first Pilgrim Thanksgiving. It was started many years later by the Mexicans during a land dispute with the Apache. The Mexican government offered a bounty for every Apache killed with a scalp being required as proof of the killing.

I love this! And as a total nerd, if this was the first Thanksgiving, it was the Wampanoag peoples, not the Chippewa. I love Christina Ricci sooo much.
