Georgia attacked South Ossetia, a breakaway province that seceded from the former Soviet Union satellite, Georgia, after the Cold War ended in 1991. The Georgian President, Mikheil Saakashvili, is a Bush puppet. He thought the U.S. would back Georgia up when it began its assault on South Ossetia. He totally miscalculated both the U.S. & Russian responses. Lesson: don't trust Bush.

South ossetia did not succeed in 1991. They tried to pass a referendum that although passed, was not recognized.

You can say what you like about Georgian actions.

Im not one to say whether what they did is right, but South ossetia was still legally recognized as Georgia, and Russia had no right to get militarily involved. Especially since they have left South Ossetia and begun military action in other parts of Georgia like Gori.

Georgia does not recognize South Ossetia's(SO)secession. But SO is pro-Russian & sees things differently. The Russians were peacekeepers on the border between South Ossetia & Georgia. Yes Saakashvili is pro-western, wants to join NATO, and was democratically elected. I can understand him trying to get both SO & Abkhazia back into the fold. But he should have pursued diplomatic means instead of aggression: hence, the miscalculation of the Russian response. I agree: Russia should pull back.

Georgia, South Ossetia, & Russian signed an armistice where Russian troops began their patrolling along South Ossetia & the Georgian border in 1992. "The same year, Abkhazia declared its independence from Georgia, sparking a war that ended in 1994 with a treaty between Russia and Georgia, with Russian troops patrolling that border as well" (LA Times: pg.
