  • Doesn't get much better. Wow, so BRILLIANT even live!

  • Awesome! !

  • Godlike breakdown.

  • Love this song.

  • I recently watched an episode of Saturday Night Live from 1979. The Doobies were the musical guest and played a very tight version of "What a fool believes." Back then on SNL, artists played completely live (no taped playback of any kind). Add to that the fact that SNL went out live except for the west coast.

After pulling off the excellent performance the bandmates looked at each other with looks of relief. Tiran even held his hand to his heart! Way to go guys.

  • whooo kimosabe.....its fast!....

  • @aarmington

Actually, it's about the kind of speed I hear these songs in my head....and then I hear them played, and I'm all....my god stuff was slow in the 70s.....or do I just feel faster? No doubt music these days is generally faster.

  • @aculturemind sure music s faster.... but i think the perfect speed in music was in the 70s/80s - in the 90s it started getting tooo fast to sound right (to me)

  • @torstn

When Glenn Gould played the Goldberg Variations in his 20s, he played them fast. In his last years, he played them slower. Differently, too, of course, as that music has that feature.) Point being: some things do seem to be made for certain tempos, some are amenable to a range of them. I generally prefer 80s metal at album speed, versus concert speed. I love both recordings of Gould's Goldberg Variations.

  • @aculturemind you speak absolute shit! i think you need to get sucked into a time warp or even actually listen to the music before you start talking your shit about music that actually means something to people

  • @duckyfish

Maybe you meant that for someone else? I didn't say this here was bad, or even that I didn't like it.

  • One of my favorites

  • YAY! I hear this song on the radio all the time and I found it <3

    He's incredible.

  • qc

  • REAL MUSIC< WITH REAL MUSICIANS.

  • hahaha hilary swank. she looks like a horse

  • @311isAreligion

But Swank has a *kissing* mouth. I'll take that any day. Leave her with me, an I'll thicken up that bod, too. Ho boy.

  • Hilary Swank on the Flying V and backing vocals.

  • I like it

  • This song is the fuckin business hell with all the haters get the hell of this post

  • 'Nothing against him,

but if I hear Yah Mo B There

    one more time...

    I'm gonna yah mo

    burn this place

    to the ground.'

  • I thought he was black after listening to him for years without seeing him. And that's a compliment!

  • Fantastic music !

  • that hes on one lol

  • Awesome! - The Doobie Brothers-What a fool believes

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • 1:23 The white man has the power!!

  • The Doobies really are the BOMB, Michael McDonald, legend :)

  • IF I CATCH "CRUNCHYBAYSEE" IN THE STREET, I AM TRULY, WITH AN OPEN PALM, SLAPPIN THE SHIT OUT OF HIM.

  • nice

  • I LOOOOOOVE MICHAEL MCDONALD!!!!!

  • Reminds me of my trip to California in '79.

  • Awesome!!!!

  • CRUNCHY-WHAT FUCKIN ROCK DID U CRAWL OUT OF?

  • Michael McDonald was my least favorite edition to the doobie bros, but thats just my opinion.

  • @CrunchyBaysse What a fool believes

  • "THE VOICE" great stuff takes me back :D

  • His voice is perfect even when singing live. In fact it almost doesn't sound live it is so good! He obviously doesn't need any autotuning in the studio.

  • show!

  • I must.....hold back......must not.....AAAAH! *Starts the Carlton Dance"

  • I have always loved the Doobie Brothers, AND Michael McDonald. Each and every one of them should be put in the Music Hall of Fame: ALL of them!!! I just heard Boz Scaggs and Michael McDonald in Cary, NC. Michael was the best!!

  • Pure f*cking poetry...! what a fool believes....(sounds like a political campaign slogan) LMFAO~

    Awesome song....

  • what in the world do the Doobie Brothers need with two drummers? still love this song though!

  • @thefoxcatch The Doobies have always had 2 drummers and they sound amazing. Listen to the early DB music and here the power behind the kits and mainly the 2nd drummer plays percussion instruments which compliment the multiple guitars and harmony vocals. Just saw them last week. STILL rockin!

  • j adore ce son

  • That epic guitar solo

  • release osama

    its that good

  • mcdonald's vocal performance here is amazing.

  • @kemaxiu Burger King will have to work much harder now...

  • Michael McDonald should never have joined this band, and I don't consider them the Doobies when he was part of them. They became his back-up band and he took them away from their rock roots and their music went downhill.

    Rock on Doobies.

  • @greygtv6 you really think so?

  • @greygtv6

    Totally agree with you!!!

  • OMGEEEE! Listen to Michael sing "he's watching her go..." the first time in the song. So beautifully heartbreaking!!! I wish he sang it that way on the original track. Still...pure genius. I'm 27, and yes...THE DB's ROCK!!!!

  • now i know what pop music sounds like - very dated now though I like the Doobie Brothers - but no Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, Dicky Betts, Jimi Hendrix etc. "pop" soda I was in high school when I first saw Clapton live - but the radio was am so these guys were on all the time. Then years later SRV!

  • i'd jump him in a heart beat

  • I kinda always that Michael McDonald was the guy that jumped the Doobies shark.

  • Michael McDonald is GOD? I'm willing to consider that possibility.

  • this was around the time doobies went from white to black and lost many early fans

  • i went through 3, count them, of their Minute by Minute album. Completely wore the first two out!! They were a real 'sign' of the times to me anyway!!

  • The Doobies Rock

  • Growing up in the late 70's/early 80's I hated this song... it was played practically 24/7 (second only to Stairway to Heaven) and I was quick to change the station when it came on. Now I have an appreciation for it. I am about to play it again for the 3rd time... how I miss the days of real music.

  • @cutsup350 ur an idiot "real" music in the late 70's and early 80's? better clean out those ears or dust off

    the history books sonny

  • @sixsixxsixxxx Whatever you say, pops. And it's "you're."

  • holy shit, a flying v heavy metal guitar!

  • good times 4 me born in 70 ,rememering going camping and listening to this ,people were cool and we all got along .good feeling music 4 us kids in this era.peace!

  • This falls into the "trippy songs while high" list doesn't it?

  • Friends: I would like to buy this DVD or video file. I saw this concert in full once, about 20 years ago, but could never find it anymore. Does anybody know the name of this concert or where it was played and in which year? Thank you very much.

  • i agree with every single comment here! this is kin` incredible.i dont need to add anything to the comments.they speak for themslves.love and peace!! x x x

  • Wow! How cool is this? Michael McDonald hammering away on an ol' Yamaha CP70. Class! Pure class! Don't you find the music of today is lacking essence. It tries to be clever with production and is actually more style over substance!

  • @1969atam, yep.

  • Why don't we steal away

  • @RockingOutLoud4Ever1 "he's good live"?? He's FANTASTIC ! He's never off tone, and has an amazinly extensive vocal range, he goes from falsetto to deep low voice and back, no break, no mistake, live !

I know of very few current day male singers who can do that... :-)

  • @prvdiss Is that a falsetto? I could never tell.

  • That gray hair, the beard, and those sexy blue eyes.and that sexy ,raspy voice. He's everything a women dreams of !!!!!

  • @jessicavega1952

    I'm agree with you !

  • WHAT A FOOL BELIEVES ..... LISTEN TO HIS WORDS !!

  • Love Michael McDonald!

  • Michael Jackson and his brothers actually sang background for this song and a couple of others for the Doobie Brothers - there's a clip on youtube somewhere of Michael singing the song.

  • @JetBeetle that's why I love this song XD

  • This is a classic its funny cuz this song is older than me and its one of my favorites I was born in 78' but I have a great appreciation for good music love Micheal McDonald's voice, one of the most distintive voices of our time.

  • @belon778 Born in 77 here, feel the same way that you do!

  • Great song!! And it was live with no resets. Great emotion in his voice.

Takes me back to the time my dad owned his clothing store in Cherokee, IA.

For a while he would get free samples of albums from Warner Bros. This was one of them. I also remember an album from Young singing "Rockin' in the Free World." Timeless.

  • the venue was UCSB...the BEST place to see a concert!

  • I love whimsy!

  • one of my fave songs ever

  • 15 people sadly had a fit out of shear amazment when they saw this and accidentally clicked the "dislike" button,

let us pray for those unfortunate few! :P

  • What is the venue? is this a released Video/DVD ? just curious. yr?

  • Song make me want to shop for groceries

  • @EricDymond LMAO hell yeah ......but this song is a great one

  • Comment removed

  • @EricDymond yeah grocery stores always play the best oldies. i can't even remember how many songs I heard, straining to hear the lyrics so I could google them and find it on youtube

  • @EricDymond Your'e an idiot!!

  • You are an Idiot!!

  • Boz Scaggs is black too. LOL

  • 15 people are fools not to enjoy timeless, classic, intellgent, wonderful music

  • Who would dislike this amazing song... Jeeze.

  • This is all time favorite. The words of this song are actually full of wisdom....what a fool sees he believes.....the wise man has the power to reason away.

  • Super group.Hard to beat

  • im so excited im going to see him on sat!!ive been waiting on this momen,t since the first time i saw him on his sweet freedom video and with patti on my own, wow first or second grade

  • A true classic. It’s funny, each time I hear this song, it takes me back to around the time that I first heard it, watching the episode of “What’s Happening” where the Doobie Brothers appeared on the show back in ’78. Wow, over 30 years ago, and still I‘m taken back every time I hear this song. We don’t need any time machines, just good music and a second to appreciate the things that GOD has blessed us with…

  • @wmadoro ditto

  • @wmadoro

Hehehe...yeah ! Rerun had the tape recorder and Rog goes to one of them "which Doobie Youbee?

  • @ride80

Yo, that's the line, lol! Not many people today even remember the show, let alone that episode. Over 30 years ago and I still remember it like yesterday. Man, where does the time go? GOD bless...

  • @wmadoro

And Sweet Daddy Williams from Good Times was the guy who gave Rerun the tape recorder! Cheers man...

  • @ride80

    Yo! For sure haha..

  • @wmadoro that episode is here on Youtube I believe. Rerun and his popcorn.

  • @wmadoro had me until god has blessed us

  • @wmadoro , 100 % True !

  • @wmadoro I was right with you until that last bit. Gotta love the irony of religious sentiment on a video of 'What a fool believes'

  • @wmadoro Didn't Rerun get busted for recording it! lol. Early piracy at it's best! lol

  • @pickzkickz

Criminal mischief followed with a tolerable corrective action and a comical ending. That time period (and the 80s) just seemed so much simpler.

  • @wmadoro Im watching whats happenin now.....but they didnt sing this song

  • golden....true legend

  • I love to hear this guy sing ! I remember when I was a kid , almost every black household had a doobie bros record . As a kid , I always thought he was black .. I never seen a white guy with this much SOUL ! You can feel his music . I'm a fan for life ......

  • @1482man let em know!!

  • I'm back at the Astor in Deal, late 70's....... Thank you :-)

  • Michael McDonald is one cool righteous dude, man.

  • Michael McDonald has an amazing voice, extremely rare talent. Lets not forget Doobie Brothers as a group, amazing combination!

  • Chuck Norris does it all. What a voice.

  • 2:35 A giant insect creeps up on Michael McDonald, but it becomes stunned by a high E flat and withdraws.

  • esta cancion es toda una legenda

    lo dice jorge Astudillo

  • The Doobie Brothers were the closest thing we had between Rock and Disco. This is, for sure, the best band of the 70's

    I love the 70's!!

  • Great moments, great memories... this song is like a trip on the time! Thank you for this!

  • Always thought the lyrics were "she calibrates in his life," not "she had a place in his life." I like my lyrics better actually.

  • @BoundaryShift lol

  • michael mcdonald is legendary....

  • great music...sounds great today, especially among all the bieber gaga trash out there.

  • @isftish amazing is that the singing has it's own line, while the music has a little seperate melody, which you can hear going on behind. then it all comes together in the chorus, lead vocals, harmony, and music. fantastic.

  • TY KoKo for the smooth

  • McD loves singin close up in that mike lol

  • ESTA ES UNA DE LAS MEJORES CANCIONES DE AQUELLAS GRANDES ÉPOCAS. MUCHOS NOS ENAMORAMOS ESCUCHÁNDOLA.

  • Dang! That's smooth.

  • DOOBIE BROTHERS/What a Fool Believes スティーリーダンの優等生、Mマクドナルドが歌う、Kロギンスオリジナル。

  • Smooth. Really loved this group. Mostly, I love Michael McDonald.

  • 13 people have believed like a fool

  • @SauceTV1 13 people are foolish 827 people are fools!

  • So Damn Smooth!

  • HE CAME FROM

  • Oh yah!!!!!!! Love it, Awesome!!!!!!!!

  • Any chance you could upload the studio version? Or would you face the banhammer?

  • Thank you so much for posting!

It reminds me highschool memories! Amazing!

  • una de las mejores canciones del mundo

  • una de las mejores canciones de este mundo

  • Truely a Classic to stand the test of time

  • i love Micheal Macdonald but he always sounds like he's in the dental chair trying not to gulp!

  • as a kid man....all i can say is that i literally used to cry listening to songs, and this one in particular. i can't say why...music, real music just moved me.

My dad blessed me with the gift of music. I absolutely love this song man...Wow, takes me back to the late '70's, when life was just life in a kid's mind and beautiful music, just like this song by the Legendary Doobie Brothers was the backdrop of it all.

  • White on the outsside + Black on the inside = Michael McDonald!!!

  • @tinapbutler Michael's a superb singer. It doesn't have to be that he's got "Black" on the inside. White men can sing and so can browns and blacks and even yellows and reds. Take him for what he is a White man who can really sing and bring great music to life. Peace from fareast!

  • @tinapbutler I didn't say that he wasn't a superb singer, I can hear. The comment was was a compliment meaning that he's gotta lot of soul. I happen 2 be African American. It's a Black thing!!! So if were offended by my comment I apologize.

  • @tinapbutler He has soul , so he is black on the inside ? News flash , you dont have to be black to be a great singer !!!!! Its like looking at an intelegent black person and saying "he pretty smart for a black guy " .

  • I was 5 years old when I saw these guys, my first concert! I loved it!!

  • Rip the audio from this tune at soundnabber doht cohm.

  • wtf flying v

  • the music is so awesome i have loved this song for as long as it was created and will love till I died. it is so stimulating both styles of voicing and instrumentation.

  • This song was the FIRST pop or rock tune to use a programmed synth part. The keyboard player played parts ahead of time, pushed a button and had the synth

play back what was in it. I love it. And the song tells a clear story. You can see it in your mind.

  • I heard this song on the radio at work and tried to catch some of the lyrics so I could find it on youtube, but I couldn't. I searched through hours of 70s music, looking for this song. I finally found it =]]]]

    I'm rocking out d(-.-)b

  • Awesome

  • Ian patterson ken here what are you up to, ken55atlive.fr i would love to here from you. went to London 10 days ago, please reply if you see this

  • michael mcdonald has got some soul behind him. his music always makes me feel good.

  • Yes.. his voice is a real spin-out! Top stuff! Love it! I also dig the bass riff here! It awesome!

  • I'm 19 and love these classics. Was born and raised on 50s-70s music.

  • wow

  • I was 13 years old on a bus on school trip in 1978. This song was number 1 in the states and came on the radio. It the time punk rock was at its height. I felt very unfashinable because I was into my father's and uncle's music of the Doobies, Eagles, James Taylor and the Beatles which was very very uncool at the time. I remember the lad said "What the fuck is this crap!!?". I said nothing and just listened to this perfect song and floated away on his ignorance :) Remember to this day lol

  • This video is the definition of Talent, Not this stupid Justin Bieber and Lil' Wayne bullshit.

  • @nikwuzheer Couldn't agree with you more

  • @nikwuzheer dont you EVER use those names and talent in the same PARAGRAPH again!

  • Michael McDonald is one of the best black singers in the world!! Doobies Rock!!!!

  • @redbonegal you can clearly see in the video that he is white

  • @redbonegal Hahahaha........oh wait a minute......

  • @redbonegal

He is white not black! What a voice!

  • @redbonegal, Agreed and Luther Vandross is one of the best white singers in the world.

  • @redbonegal hey niga. Michaels' white.

  • @gilmorechan lol-he is white, but his soul is black-niga ;-)

  • @redbonegal he's white

  • @Jevhova no duh :p

  • @redbonegal heck yeah he's up there with steve winwood :D

  • @redbonegal bahahaha

  • @redbonegal LOL!!!
