  • A really cool band....

  • Tnx 4 sharing!

    sniff,

    The Don

    from Holland

  • Wonderful blue-eyed soul. The last half of this song always reminded me of a "wall of sound" ala Phil Spector. Great story line too. The Burritos at their very soulful best.

  • Uh, i can think of two better versions of this song... james carr, and richard & linda thompson. i mean i love the gram version. there is nothing more harrowing and crushing as richard and linda in the throes of a failed partnership, yet still, being punished nightly, performing, and singing this song. tension so thick, there is not an object to cut it.

  • totally agree that clown doesnt have a clue.ive been listening to this song for years and what drew me in is grams emotion in his voice.

  • When I listen to this, I shake my head and say "Why have I never to listened to the Flying Burrito Brothers until today?"

  • Such a great song

  • @tomthefunky, you can go fuck yourself. First, if you post a comment such as yours, you can expect a backlash, specifically from me. Second, if you think this song is rushed, your perception of time is off (Don't care if you think you're a musician). Third, Gram's voice is pretty ripe with emotion. I think the general consensus here is his voice captures the emotion of the song pretty damn well. Fourth, Pete is "noodling" away. What a pretentious asshole you are. Fifth, go fuck yourself again.

  • @TheGloryOfMan yeah i agree with you man. Nobody can tell me this is rushed and has no emotion. And that guy needs to go fuck himself again.

  • @TheGloryOfMan , uh i thin you mean rife, not ripe..a ripe voice makes me think of cheese, spoiled stuff, and fermented things.

  • I restarted this several times just to hear him counting down in his sweet soft voice and honeyed southern accent... ♪ ♥ ♪

  • Gram was an incredible talent albeit a wreckless one. Long live his music.

  • How sad to have lost such a talent as Gram Parsons. How wonderful to have the music still.

  • he shines like syd barrett :)

  • Gram was one cool dude, miss you bro, miss you

  • Love Gram but I don't like this at all. They rush through it with zero emotion. And Sneaky Pete is just noodling away after each verse. It sounds like Pete is just playing anything he could think of.

  • I want to go out like Parsons! We don't have real Rock and Roll rebels any longer!

  • This is just great country music. As good, if not better than the Archie Campbell - Lorene Mann version.

  • Gram had soul.

  • Clicked on this song out of curiousity,I have literally wore out an album and a cassette (remember those?) of this song by Percy Sledge, and I never thought I could like it by someone else,I stand corrected. This version is wonderful, thanks for the post, forgotten how young we all were back then and when it was just about the music.

  • @BrandonTxOthor Be sure and check out James Carr's and Eva Cassidy's versions of this great tune

  • Awesome! Great music!

  • Excellent!

  • almost sounds like an old old version of Texas Country.

Like Texas Country and John Denver had sex and made babies.

  • yeah man im 28 and id rather listen to this shit over most new shit

  • @SuperJenb13 Just shows what a good musical ear you have...keep listening....it doesn't get much better than this...Kate

  • I really like this band! I never knew about them, though I was the biggest Poco fan going! Maybe, Poco wasn't the very first band the joined country and rock to form this wonderful music?!? Peace, BobbyK

  • This is a great tune and has been done well by a number of people from Ry Cooder to The Commitments. However. this is the best version. I really like the Everly Brothers feel to the harmony. Miss you Gram.

  • 'Have recently bought Gram's 800+ page bio. There are some people just not meant to live into old age. Gram was one of them. As many smokescreens/lies he threw out there, he was REAL about the music. Remembered forever, appreciated always. Can't wait to see Chris Hillman/Herb Pedersen a month from now in Toronto...

  • Beautiful----

    Thanks much

  • Me gusta!

  • 2nd best version of this great song. Cat Power rules it. However, this is the best FBB song, tho 6 days on the road is CUTE

  • viva G.P.

  • fucking great!

  • Wow, what harmonies. Music from the greatest era. I feel so sorry for the 20- and 30- somethings who think what they listen to is music. The record companies have killed talent. Nuff said.

  • @hotajax

couldn't agree more but i have to throw in a caveat. i was born in 1982, and the majority of the music i listen to is from before 1975. a lot of my friends are the same way. no other generation has been so into music from 30, 40, 50 years earlier.

  • without question the finest version of this song and one that surely will never be bettered. Gram Parsons at the peak of his powers and stamps his charisma all over it.

  • @diktatorship I like James Carr's version better. This one is pretty good though.

  • @diktatorship Hardly "the finest version" of this song. Listen to Ry Cooder and the Chicken Skin Revue" on BBC TV, the Old Grey Whistle Test....1977. The singers are sublime; and Ry turns in one of the great slide guitar solos in History!

  • @swiggy58a Ry's instrumental version on Boomer's Story is also sublime

  • @swiggy58a

    agreed

  • @swiggy58a I must agree. I've listened to Carr's, Richard and Linda Thompson's (which is also awesome!), and Gram's and have to agree that Ry's version on 1977 BBC-TV is beyond amazing! His guitar solo gave me goose bumps!! I do love Gram and I love his version too,,,but as I see it (and hear it), Ry and The Chicken Skin Revue has the superior version.

  • So your telling me out of all flying burrito brother shows, nobody was smart enough to bring a damn camera...freekin shame, and for those of you who dislike this F$%# off

  • Comment removed

  • @dorkinglad

Both renditions of the songs are simply breathtaking and awe inspiring.I, however prefer Gram's but I love them both to death.James Carr might have been the best soul singer to ever grace the earth and Gram excelled both as a songwriter and singer with tremendous depth and beautiful color of voice,..

  • ma che bel pezzo di musica. Oggi non se ne fa più cosi. Mitici Flyng !!!

  • The guy in the background in the first picture looks scarily like the pictures i've seen of my dad after his service in Vietnam!!! That being said, being born in '78, the first time I heard this song, it was redone fairly recently by Frank Black on the Honeycomb album. I always give the most credit to the original artist, but listen to Odis Redding, "She may be weary" then let your ears feast on Three Dog Nights' re-do! Like Skynyrds', "Simple Man" , then Shinedowns' re-do!

  • "Gilded Palace of Sin" by the flying burrito brothers and "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" by the byrds, are the only country music i like. oh, i cant forget the eagles either. ;D

  • @PAULisDEADMANnumber9 i sure can forget the fagles esp compared to the former bands

  • I have this one in a Gram Parson/FFB collection. One of my preferred from that album together with "Hand to Mouth". Thanks for posting !

  • James Carr didn't "cover" it..he recorded the original version

  • @garytalley dan penn wrote it so you're wrong

  • @brob8479 I didn't say Dan didn't write it. Dan and Chips Moman wrote it. James Carr was the first person to record it. I am NOT wrong

  • flying burrito brothers......thats just awesome all by itself!

  • Gram had nothing to do with writing this song. It was Dan Penn and Chips Moman that wrote. One of two soul tunes the Burritos did on their classic first album.

  • Gram, like Ray Charles, always understood that country and soul were two sides of the same coin. Remarkable song.

  • @ziffels gram made country-rock sexy

  • "The Commitments'" version put me off this song for years, but Gram is just pure magic and has restored the sadness and futility to the words in a way I find irresistible.

  • i didnt know Gram wrote this

is this the one that James Carr covered ?

    man a great fucking tune

  • @spadge321 Neither did I. Did he?

  • cosmic cowboy. that monniker suits him fine.

  • Honestly people, it's Chris Hillman's harmony vocal and Sneeky Pete's pedal steel that really make this song.

  • @nkfiddler13 I respect your opinion, but I reckon Gram could perform this alone on acoustic without losing any of its magic.

  • gram you live on to the people who care and learn to do what you want to do sounds easy please mom

  • great song,gram parsons r.i.p.

  • Listen to how strong his voice is....by the end you could tell he was already leaving....had been leaving little by little all along...

  • Mick might have the snarl, but Gram has the heart, that pain thing in the chest that knocks you back.....

  • Great Picture, great performance of a great song.

  • Great Picture

  • apesta esta version!!!

  • "If you should see me" part gives me the chills.

  • Some wonderful stuff from TFBB Featuring Gram on vocals,

  • @bytor It's still sung as a soul song, it's not all about the instruments =)

  • this picture- I'm pretty sure was taken at the Pomona college "Wash Out" in 1969= I was there on the left side of the stage!

  • i've just been listening to some other great versions of this song - ie percy sledge, eva cassidy, but in my opinion this is by far the best of the lot!

  • music to my ears, this never gets old

  • I love both Carr and Parsons. Can I just say that?

  • Old-time R and B singer Oscar Toney does this one and Do Right Woman on his self-titled album.

  • great tune, but they don't do it justice. percy sledge is very good, but JAMES CARR is the best verison. always the first to be the best. can't be sung country, gotta be soul

  • @bytor21122112

I don't know about this song only working if it's done soul style. Don't get me wrong- I understand your preference for a different vibe(and I'll take your advice and check out the James Carr version), but I think Gram reads the lyric very well.

  • @written12 , yeah, they do do a go version, but i dunno, it just doesn't sound right, maybe i am just too used to hearing it sung as a soul song, but none the less, still a great tune. i will tell you this though, FBB does a fantastic version of Aretha Franklin's "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man"!!! if you haven't heard that one yet, may i suggest trying to find it on here, its very well done and my favorite version of that song! :)

  • @bytor21122112 yup i agree, the time tested authentic version will always be james carr. but this is probably the best cover since.

check out ry cooder's version on the ol' grey whistle test. its righteous.

  • burn one right now for gram!!!!!!!!!

  • Could not decide whether to post the Percy Sledge, James Carr, or this version... Burritos win. (Burritos always win. (Burritos do not always win.))

  • @nickstolle i listened to the P,S, cut and it was bordering on sorry. I give J.C. credit for making a soulful cut that is for me the model for all the following versions after him. The FBB have a good solid tune but it isn't straight R&B and that's the way I regard this cut. I also put Eva Cassidy's version #2 spot. It's just hard to compete with the original because it has the edge to cement itself in your mind.

  • @nor888vast695 Has to be JC - just

  • this is a gran kinda day, peace people,be kind to each other,

  • great song...check out the version by the committments too

  • what a great way to meet you, FB!! Through Percy Sledge, with you both till the end of the road!!

  • Gram was ahead of his time. I remember when he was with "THE BYRDS" and then he formed The Flying Burrito's.

After his demise Emmylou Harris kept his legacy alive. I think of him every time I'm in the desert.

  • It's kinda' hard to have another journey when your road manager set your alcohol soaked body on fire in the desert!...Let's just admit it, he was a shooting star who is dead, but his musical footprint will endure as long as we remember him.

  • I love this song. Great band.

  • I love the story of how he..gram and keith richards would sit and play tear jerkin corn ball songs for hours both honestly loving them as I do

  • gods own singer

  • perfection......

  • This is better than most of what Nashville produces these days.

  • @ausgang got that right. There shit is asembly line, souless crap.

  • @ausgang this is better than anything Nashville produces these days...corporate country sucks...just a thought

  • @ausgang

This is better than what anybody produces these days

  • @ausgang

    Most?!

Show me one track out of that vile cesspool that has even a modicum of the soul this song has. Let alone Gram fucking singing it.

    Bitch please.

  • @ausgang While I agree, I must go full geek on you and point out that these guys really had little to do with Nashville.

  • Thanks -- I really love this song but what I want to commend you on is the fantastic photo!! It truly captures the innocence, enthusiasm and -- if it doesn't sound too over the top -- the beauty of that moment. Lovely....

  • a cold night, a shot of bourbon, a smoke, and gram,,,it will do,,,we miss you gram, cosmic cowboy,,we will never forget,,,,

  • still sounds as good as it did way back when...

  • Strawberry Fields Forever

  • I just got into the fbb recently and this is WAY more country than most anything out there today. It rox. GREAT stuff. Wish he hadnt gotten on that damn heroin.

  • some freak said he looked like tom cruise, that freak was blind in 1 eye and couldnt see out of the other,

  • gram was 100 times better lookin and talented than tom cruise....a lot hipper and laid back too!

  • i just cant understand how somebody could get tom, the idiot cruise, out of this angel, this ultament perfection of a man, it has totally just freaked me out, lets get real, gram, perfection, tom, a blooming idiot,

  • who said he destroyed hisself, this story ended, he started another, he had one hell of a journey while he was here, i hope his next journey was, or is just as good

  • it gave me chills,,i was only a 9 or 10 year old when i first heard these guys,,,what can i say,,, i,ve always LOVED good music

  • Like it says on his tombstone Gram Parsons "God's Own Singer"

  • Love them harmonies at the end.

  • I saw Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers when they opened for The Doors at the Aquarius Theater back in the day. Such memories. It must have been 1970 or 71. oldmusicman32

  • GOD!!! THAT IS AWESOME!!!! I Wish I could have been around back then...I'm SUCH a GRAM wannabe groupie - lol...seriously - he's the best to me...not much in life gets better - as far as i'm concerned...gram is the epitomy of the spirit of music :)

  • Good to hear from you re: Gram Parsons and the Flying Burrito Brothers. Most of the comments on You Tube are so lame, uninformed and even vicious. I don't know why. I have been around for such a long time since 1932 ! Can you believe it. I have lived in Hollywood off and on for most of the past 50 years, so I have heard most of the artists others can only talk about.. And I enjoy almost all kinds of music, from Classical to Folk and all in between. Opera to Steve Earle. Just have to listen.

  • I hope I haven't bothered you with the Youtube clips. I will stop sending them if you wish. No harm intended.

  • Hello again: I promised not to bother you any more' but here I am again. Remember I said in my first comment that I saw Gram Parsons when they opened for the Doors then I watched Oliver Stone's film about the Doors on cable last night and realized I had not expanded on that and neither did you. The Doors were the hottest band in the country at that time and Jim Morrison was my idol. He was way before his time and his live performances were legendary. I will never forget his masterpiece "The End"

  • YEAH!

  • Enjoy, what a talent. I don't think we will ever hear musicians like this anytime soon. The recording industry is so rigid and formula based it stifles creativity. They want to create a sound instead of finding one. No wonder they are bleeding money. They can't blame it all on file sharing. If they put out a good product for a fair price like theyused to people would buy the albulm,LIKE THEY USED TOO!!

  • Your words really touch me. I am an LA music scene junkie, and there is truly great original stuff being done now, much in this style. Major labels don't care. Cover bands make money, but guys like this pay thru the nose to get a show with the pay to play system. Clubs don't nurture talent. It is an endless downward spiral. I do think that no "fair" price can ever compete with free. As an artist, I can't sell my stuff if someone snaps a bad cell phone pic. If I charge even $1, free wins.

  • You're right. The big recording names are stubborn and unforgiving. They really only go through with the type of music that their research says the people want. Who cares about research? Find some good bands with good sounds.

  • I think that the big lables don't want to admit they are losing money because, although they think that Britney Spears et alia appeal to the least common denominator, the average listener does have taste and individuality, and they are seeking their favorite sounds on myspace and buying their independently released CDs on CDBaby. That is what I do. Unfortunately, because you can't amass a huge following without a big PR push, some of the most talented artists are still poor.

  • the first guy to start playing country rock, though he never knew it poor guy

  • Fantastic !!!

  • if you should take a walk downtown and take some time to walk around.. if you should see me

  • and i walk on by...wow,that particular vocal and part of the song is utter class..just have to keep rewindin it dont you..sheps,swansea!!

  • Fantastic !!!!!!!!! : )

  • Let's give Gram The love and appreciation he deserves... I miss him and now days if yer a hippie playing country yer shit. the line between rock ,blues and country is blurred but solid.

  • ur right about d hope bit! its cool!

  • This song has been covered thousands of times look on ITunes Aretha Franklin, Ry Cooder, Cat Power etc. this is my fav because it has a sense of hope and hapiness in it

  • this is great.

reminds me of crazy horse, esp at the start.

    fantastic voice

  • Let us at last commend Dan Penn and Chips Moman, with the help of Spooner Oldham for writing this. Dan's version is equal to James Carr's version, on the CD 'A Few Moments From This Theater" recorded in Dublin.

  • I knew a guy whose now a big shot music journalist. At first listen, this was bullshit hick rock to him because it wasn't Northeastern Jew approved. He learned.

  • Good stuff

Richard and linda thompson covered this one too.

  • man oh man. james carr's version and linda's are iconic and great, but this version really takes me back

  • cute brunette in the crowd

  • Emmy Lou you think?

  • I love hippy chicks.

  • Prince Buster put out a single of this song back in the day. And all I have to say is WOW.

  • What is a complete crap is amnesics people or ignorants that never heard FBB version, ara praising the crazy , dull and sterile Cat Power version of the song !

  • Wow, I heard the Eels version first and it is also very good! I'm just getting into FBB and looking at some top tracks. I like what I hear.

  • love it like it thank you

  • Great Song. I love the way the Rock City Angels perform it.

  • I used to perform this song with Percy Sledge. He used to intro it by saying, "This song don't fit me no more - it's a size 8 and I'm a size 10". This was because his wife, Rosa, was usually in the audience, and he didn't want her to think he was cheatin'.

It is a GRAET song about obsession - "it's a sin.. but our love keeps comin' on strong". But, then, ALL the really good songs - and especially cheatin' songs - are about obsession, aren't they?

  • you are the MAN!!! Percy Sledge!!! Damn!!! You know Rufus Beacham?

  • I FUCKING love THIS VERSION!

  • it's the best.

  • Gram's voice is the perfect instrument to convey the lyrics of this song. You are correct, no other version nails it like the Flying Burrito Brothers version.

  • agree 100%

  • I think that the Lee Hazlewood and Ann Margret is the best version.

  • Thats what Ray Charles called a death march tempo!

  • "we'll steal away..." God I love Gram's voice.

  • Dan Penn wrote this song. However, this is the penultimate version.

  • So it's the next to last song? That makes no sense. Look up the definition of penultimate.

  • you know what he means smart guy

  • The "penultimate" comment was probably just joking around anyway. He meant "ultimate" and we all know it. I've never heard another version, though I can't imagine one topping this. Frank Black did a rendition.

  • I like Gram's counting of of the song.

  • Gram Parsons ROCKS!!!!!!

  • Gram or Aretha, Cooder or Oscar Toney Jr. Lets face it, this is a pretty great song, and Gram sings from the heart, hear me, from the heart!

  • Linda Ronstadt did a pretty good version of this too...on "Heart Like a Wheel"

  • I consider Linda's version to be my favorite.

  • me too...god when she sings "they're gonna find us"...chills up the spine...just my opinion...

  • This is my favourite Gram vocal. He just knows how to touch my soul in this song. Thank you Gram - I love you.

  • This is beautiful. Thank you. Such a sad loss. Sad that so many people in the music industry die too soon.

  • RIP gram. I ll always love you. You re the best.

  • Nobody does this song better than Gram.

  • This is good, but I must say that Adrew Strong does it better

  • i got your cooter

  • james carr nailed it!

  • I agree with everyone; it doesn't get any better than the original~ Gram Parsons & FBB!
