they're evocative of the smiths like a younger writer might write in noel coward's voice, his sensibility or worldview etc. never bothered me either. it's a genre unto itself. gene indulged in melody variation more IIRC. pity they never toured my part of america.
if they had a different singer/voice they would still would be great, i love this era of music, they emphasized the tag indie in my opinion they were right in the middle of it and what indie shoudve sounded like. the best band of the 90s in this catergory.
Look how young Martin looks..My All Time Favorite Band, most musically and personally..I got to meet them on several occasions, when they toured the states, and they not only were gracious, but wanted to hang out socially..I love and miss them..XOXO to Martin!!
One of the greatest songs of the 90's. Unfair that Martin Rossiter got chants of "Morrissey! Morrissey!" at earlier gigs. Nobody chanted at Liam n Noel "Beatles! Stones! T-Rex! The Jam! or Ian Brown! at Liam. There was snobbery towards Gene and OCScene for sounding retro but not at Oasis or Suede for doing the same.
Totally agree with what some have said here. I was thinking that Gene got a lot of stick in the mid-90's for being Smiths copyists. Totally unfair accusation when they were such a great band. Look at Oasis-they sounded like the Beatles, Stones, Jam & Roses and yet got high praise. Felt sorry for Gene, they should've been bigger. Fantastic band.
I never got the feeling that Gene were actively trying to rip-off the Smiths. The influence is certainly there, but there are a lot of bands that were influenced by groups like the Cure, the Smiths, yet went on to develop their own style. I just think Gene never got that big break that would have made them really famous outside the UK, which is a pity because I always thought they were brilliant. Songs like 'I Can't Help Myself' et al. are beautiful songs that just didn't get enough airplay.

The greatest song The Smiths never recorded - ha! Builds gently then soars majestically...a seriously gorgeous proposition, a band unfailrly maligned as Smiths copyists....
Martin now runs the Access to Music Studios in Brighton, which offer Creative Music Producer and Performing Musician courses up to the entry level for university.
One of the most underrated bands of the 90's. In my eyes this song captures Martin Rossiter's vocal abilities best. It's just a pity the band has split. Does anybody know about the whereabouts of this fantastic singer?
Fucking amazing.....This song plays at the end of 'FACE' with Ray Winstone and Robert Carlyle, Ive searched for this ever since, then find it accidently. Maybe the greatest film ever made, maybe the greatest song ever written.
I remember this! had all these great UK bands, I miss this time in my life! Really wish I could go bak to it! I had this taped but dunno wat happend to it! this band was so amazing! xxx Thanks for posting!
Gene were not 'Brit pop' sir they ARE hugely talented and have yet to return as cartoon zoo characters in my humble newly founded google you tuba playing opinion.
1.68 Billion dollars WAY TO GO Sir.
It seems like everyone will sell out in the end but thankfully Gene haven't yet.
I am however willing to negotiate £168 upwards for Martin Rossiter to sing 'where are they now' at my wedding in Feb 07....
I remember seeing this when it first aired (It was presented by Damon Albarn form Blur - introducing all the Britpop bands). At the time, I hadn't even heard of Gene but after I saw this I became a huge fan and I continue to be a huge fan now.
Definitely sounds like the Smiths, but still a good song.

There's no doubt this sounds like the Smiths but I loved the Smiths and I liked Gene too, the copyist tag never bothered me.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Rossiter never re produced his studio skill. Saw Gene in Dublin 1996, not a good live singer.
