It's very Meryl Streep - beauty and brilliance in subtlety. When I first saw it I was on pins and needles to see if she was going to explode. The scene where she confronts her partner is also beautiful, original and stirring.
I felt this scene along with Julianne Moore's speech later on in the film.
This might just be me but I also loved the way Anette Bening tells off Mark Ruffalo, "Yeah, and I need your observations like I need a dick in my ass!"
Annette, please accept all apologies for not getting the Oscar for this one. No offense to Natalie Portman because the Oscar is a voted-on award, but I think the Academy confused the effort of actually going into ballet with the performance - and I never bought the evolution from white to black swan. With a single scene in "TKAAR" (discovering the affair at the dinner table) Bening gave the best performance of the year. Oscars have been handed out for so much less.
Annette Bening was brilliant in this scene. She's the type of actress that just gets this certain look in her eye and you're suddenly completely engaged in them. She captured the intensity of this scene entirely in her face and only a handful of actresses can do that. If she wasn't up against Natalie Portman this year, I believe she would have won the Oscar for Best Actress.
"Black Swan" was enjoyable at times, but nothing special. Definitely not a film I'd love to watch again. In contrast, "The Kids Are All Right" was way more than entertaining. Real-life situations, brilliantly acted by a well-picked cast. And so was "Winter's Bone", which shocked me the first time I saw it and still does. This might ring as unbelievable to some ears, but anyone can be showy and win an Oscar. But it's damn hard to be a realist and get one.
Are you guys fucking serious? I mean respect to her, but all she did was squint and show a little emotion in her eyes. Any bloody actor can do that, especially if the film is in slow motion with a quiet bass line.
You all act like "holy shit what a performance"; all I'm saying is if you want to show her true talent show a scene where she's bloody well doing something.
@cw6391 The film has been slowed down, and what does liking Natali Portman have to do with anything? I don't particularly like Portman anyway, only really watched her in V for Vendetta and the Star Wars movies.
@KidsWithGuns1992 it hasn't. you can tell by the blink of her eyes (which is 1/50th of a second) and the speaking in the background doesn't slow down despite being mixed to a low, distorted volume.
It's terrific acting. Not a big, over-the-top, showy performance like some other actresses who are also nominated for an Academy Award this year. This scene is just a realistic portrayal of a woman's reaction after discovering that her partner has been untrue. Annette Bening's eyes say it all ... no scripted words are necessary. I hope that Academy voters recognize her nuanced, realistic performance in this movie.
@toclarityweclimb Yes just because I think 2 women did a better acting job that means I've never experienced emotions like this before. You obviously didn't see Black Swan or Winter's Bone, both of which are incredibly emotional. This is a subtle scene and the best of this film, but Natalie Portman and Jennifer Lawrence had much more emotionally powerful and devestating scenes in their films.
Totally agree, amazing scene.

The only time they barely slow it down is when she is drinking her wine. The entire movie was really great acting, especially when she confronts her.
