Trepanation is used in western societies to relieve brain sweeling, because when the brain swells, there is no where for it to go, so they make a hole to relieve it. But it isnt very common anymore. These peopl have the right to their beliefs and stuff, but this looks so barbaric and unsanitary!

i just found out about this a few days a ago and started reading upon it. trepanning is a very interesting subject. I can somewhat agree that it might make you feel like a better person due to the fact that when your a baby you have a soft spot on top of your skull thats not fully developed. At that age you are always happy and never stressed out. Maybe that may be the same case for when you put a hole on your skull you are like a child when it comes to worries. There is none.
