I have not tried this but if you think about it this guy claims that the IR light controls the tv wich it does but only from a corresponding remote control...other wise all remotes would be universal.

A remote control sends tailored flashes...like morse code..EXTREMELY fast. its the time between the on/off blips that corrspond to each button that the reciever reacts to. Not a constant stream.
