Although it was a bad decision but also remember that it was the Pakistan team who brought the idea of neutral umpiring into international cricket to eliminate such incidents.
There were shocking umpires everywhere in the 1980s. The difference was that bad umpires in England and Australia used to think very carefully about appeals, then give the benefit of the doubt to the home team. Whereas Pakistani and Indian umpires just about appealed with Pakistani and Indian bowlers. If you look at these decisions, they are not in the slightest bit thoughtful or considered, just rank opportunism.
Thanks God this shitty umpiring days is gone for good. Umpires are human beings and they do make mistakes. But Aleem Dar, Toffel and rest of Elite panel has raised the standard so much, we expect them to be OK every single time.
The Gatting LBW? Not out in anybody's book guys, regardless of your allegiances but also poor decisions were not purely the domain of sub-continent umpires. I remember some shockers here in Australia against visiting teams. Over the years they tend to even out I reckon.
Awful umpiring....first once pitched outside leg and you can see all 3 stumps. 2nd one he holds the leg in place showing how far outside off it has hit him
While the umpire was definitely hasty in giving Gatting out, the decision itself appears to be right. Freeze frames from 0:10 through 0:11 and you will see the ball pitches in line and straightens a little. It was hitting middle/middle and leg.
@rutajit2000 Are you blind? I hope you're not an umpire. It pitches outside off; hits him outside off, and is missing off stump. Just look at where the keeper ends up ready to take the ball. Javed Miandad was never given out LBW in Pakistan: go figure! This tour is one of the reasons we have neutral umpires. That said, I have to agree with the comments about Constant: he was shocking and cost many a touring team, not just Pakistan.
@massivesurfboard No I am not blind but obviously you are. Don't ask questions you know the answers to. Freeze frame and look carefully. And FYI, ball pitching outside off or hitting batsman outside off does not eliminate an LBW. The key words in the law is "in line" with the stumps. Go back, talk to an ump, understand what that means and then come back and post here.
@rutajit2000 You are wrong about the Law. The relevant part of Law 36 states: "(d) the point of impact..
either (i) is between wicket and wicket
or (ii) if the striker has made no genuine attempt to play the ball with his bat, is either between wicket and wicket or outside the line of the off stump."
To paraphrase: if the batsman is playing at the ball (like Gatting here) and "the point of inpact" is outside the line of off stump, the correct decision is 'not out'. End of story
@massivesurfboard You don't win an argument by quoting the law selectively. The ball pitching outside off is not even a consideration in an LBW. The ball hitting the batsman outside off, under certain conditions, can still result in the batsman being out.
And before you start asking me if I am blind again, download the video and watch it in slo-mo on a video editor. you will see that Gatting moves outside off after the ball hits him and it hits him and run down the leg side. If it hit him outside off, that wouldn't happen. NOW, we are done. End of story.
@rutajit2000 Did you actually read what i said? I never said anything about the ball PITCHING outside off. I said 'point of impact'. You're the one who mentioned where it pitches in your first post, not me. In any event, it hits him outside off, its missing off - a blind man on a galluping horse could see that. Crap decision by a corrupt umpire. Probably Salman Butt's uncle
@massivesurfboard How old are you? 12? Do you need your mom's permission to watch You Tube videos? Watch the freakin video in slo-mo. WATCH IT. BTW, you are the one who stated when so eloquently questioning my vision, "pitches outside off", as if that means anything in an LBW decision. Go refer the rule in in entirety, I am sure, like here, you only saw what you wanted to see. PISS OFF.
@rutajit2000 It's called a 'Law', not a 'Rule'. I'm not going to resort to pathetic personal insults. We'll just have to agree to disagree. You think it was a fair decision; and I plus everyone else who has seen this video think it was bent.
LOL....although im from Pakistan....but watch this umpire....damn...he raised finger even before players appealed for it....feel sorry for batsman lol....very hasty decision..
@100kierenw NO IF U PAUSE U CAN CLEARLY SEE THE KEEPER SLIPS AND BOWLER GO UP BUT HIS FINGER DOES GO UP STRIAGHT AWAY AS SOON AS THE APPEAL MY SON IS 9 AND EVEN HE WOULD KNOW THIS IS NOT OUT THE REASON ITS CALLED LEG BEFORE WICKET MEANS WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN THIS HIT THE LEG AND WAS GOING NO WHERE NEAR THE WKTS BUT KNOWING WHAT WE DO ABOUT THE PAKISTANI PLAYERS NOW THIS MAKES ME SUSPICIOUS AS IF MAYBE THEY SLIPPED THE UMPIRE A BUNG COS THEYED BACKED THEMSELFS TO WIN IN THE BOOKIES
Absolutely ridiculous decision, not just because the ball was almost certainly missing off, but also the speed at which it was made. I can't believe people here are making excuses for the umpire.
Umpire had his finger up BEFORE the appeal...first time in cricket history! Qadir was a genius mind you...great to see his action after such a long time.
I dled the vid and slowed it down frame by frame, it could have just grazed off stump so I give the benefit of the doubt. It most definitely not plumb lbw, it surprises me that the umpire was so quick to raise the finger as it was such a close one that could have gone either way
Sorry Chap, the Umpire in this video is Shakeel Khan - known as the 'Assassin in White'. His series of abysmal decisions helped to sow the seeds for what would happen later on in the following Test at Faisalabad where Shakoor Rana was indeed on of the umpires.
@0:01 & @0:10 - Besides those two umpiring decisions we see in this video being abysmal! (which they were), the umpire in question, Shakoor Rana, raised the index finger before the actual bowler & Pakistani Team even appealed!
Basically, in my opinion, Shakoor Rana was a Pakistani, & he didn't want Pakistan to lose...
wowwww, hundreds of comments and no one bothered to look closely or at least give it a review if the decision was right or wrong, look again batsman moved his body away from the front of wickets, and ball struck him on the leg not pads, and struck him just below his knee which was in front of offstump when ball struck, letter on quickly he moved his body forward which brought his leg in straight position and knee outside the range of offstump, if you have a bit of cricket sense, then look again.
As a Pakistani I think the umpire's decisions were definitely over-hasty and thats not fair.
But talking about poor umpiring decisions, Pakistanis when touring England have often faced many bad umpiring decisions that have cost them the test itself.I can think of several bad decisions by umpire David Constant in 1982 and in 1992.
Back in those days of non-neutral umpires Pakistan strongly objected to ECB for repeatedly appointing David Constant since many of his bad decisions cost them dearly.
watching it over and over, it doesnt look that awful a decision, the ball did pitch inline, but struck outside the off. however he might have thought it was a wrung'un and hence gave out, gatting did move after the ball was struck and hence it looks even more horrible a decision.
He raised his finger before the ball was released! hahahahah
Poor old Gatting. Benig so fat he didn't often sweep as it took him a month to get back up again. No wonder he wasn't impressed with that decision.........
I remember reading that the umpire was forced to leave the field shortly after this due to the fact he dislocated his shoulder raising his finger so quickly. Boy, those really were the days !!
And the Pakis and Indians have the hide to bag Australian umpires. Gatting should have wrapped his bat over the little monkey's head with the trigger finger
It's a fact that it would've missed another set of stumps. Have you commented on the right video? LOL
At the very worst,it was missing off by two inches.
As I've said many times before, keep pausing just after it pitches and you should be able to see that it's not totally out of the question that it just hit him in line and it may have grazed off stump.
Too much doubt to give it out and the Ump's finger did go up quickly but I will always maintain that it wasn't the worst decision ever
Well, that looked out to me! Gatting reaction is the same of all English cricketers who go to Pakistan. They put the umpires under pressure right from the offset that their decisions are wrong, so that the umpires would give a Pakistani cricketer out to be seen as unbiased! From arguing about the hotel bill, to inadequte facilities and finally that the Pakistani umpires are sub-standard. Atleast one umpire had the gaul to stand up to them! Remember the Shakoor Rana incident? Gatting again!
The Pakistan of old were a disgrace amd lacked sporting spirit. They were a bunch of cheating scum. I feel for Gatting in this pic. Now that we have referrals they can't score more than 72!!! Wasim and Waquar were awesome and their new bowlers look handy.
Ha ha ha, watch Gooch's dismissal.......look at the fielder at silly point, he instinctively raises his arm and then just stands there watching his team mates wailing like banshees.......he seems totally bewildered as to what's going on!
I'm not sure it's that bad a call. It hits him just about in line. His pad ends up outside off but at the point where the ball hits him it's not that far out.
I've finally found somebody with a similar view to mine!
As I said 3 years ago. I don't think this is the worst decision ever. If you look very carefully and keep pausing, you can see that there's a possibility that it hit him in line and was clipping the stumps
Maybe Gatting should've got the benefit of doubt and maybe the Umpire did put his finger up too quickly but the fact remains it wasn't the worst call ever. In fact Rudi makes 10 worse decisions than this per match!
You can say that for another 3 years if you like, it won't make the fact that it was missing another set of stumps any less true. Shakoor Rana, RIP and all that and I don't usually speak ill of the dead but he really was bloody hopeless.
Back in the 80's Pakistanis were robbed of their share of matches by bad umpiring too. Don't forget it was Imran Khan who started the neutral umpires we have now. Worst Umpires are produced by India. Want proof? How many Indians are in the elite panel? The worst umpire still around has to be Ashoka De Silva.
@LickinMuhLips i see..thats why they won the cup in 92..came very close to winning in 99 too but they let aus win..pak were always a better team than shitty england ..thats for sure...
thank god that the umpire didn't start celebrating after he gave him out. anyways, it was a stupid overrated batsman vs a stupid overrated bowler contest amidst a cheating umpire. cricket at its worst.
Good tactics by Pakistan imo, fielding one of their players at umpiring position!
Finger went up before the appeal! Hit him a mile outside off stump and was definitely playing at that, any other umpire they would not have even appealed, they knew their man.
Poor old Gatt! Glad England don't play the 'stan too often! There's always controversy in a bad way; this example, the 'Inzi refuses to take the field' thing, ball tampering, Afridi swivelling... And no-one likes to tour there either.
I was unable to watch it (I'm English, so our national sport is not televised, and I was on holiday, and not in South Africa). But I understand Colly guided the boys through to safety AGAIN. Man for a crisis. They'll probably talk about fdropping him now, because he doesn't take many wickets. Must go to Crikinfo now..
these Porkis always played with 13 team memebers in Porkistan till it came to neutral umpires.11 players and 2 umpires...This sucking umpire is raising his finger even before appeal
'inn it'?? mate, you think you may be ask people on the street for spare fag, drink Cider or K, go to town to watch girls, mind you watch only cause no girl comes to you since your clothes smell of Curry, you are as freshy as it gets.....you are the little ignored, bullied Darkie boy in town. And you say 'inn it'?? is that the best you can speak so you think people will say 'o this boy must be a local',,,,,you prick...die in the Thames..
this umpire is awful although i wouldnt mind him when im bowling...ill take his end thanks lol...dont think he could get his finger up quick enough lol
They say if its out then umpire can give it out on his on whether the players appeal or not i witnessed the same thng when murali picked 9 wickets against Zimbabwe and wid one wicket to fall vass got nick of tailender and no one appeald so that murali can claim 10 wicket haul but i guess darrel harper gave it out with out any appeal so hw cld u guyz blame this umpire
no, that is an awful decision. Look how far his leg is outside the off stump. You can't give that out - unless the batsman isn't attempting to play a shot - which Gatting was....
Pakistanis are the biggest "cheaters" the game has seen...Thank god there are nuetral umpires now..Look at Pakistan currently, they are 7th in Test rankings just above WI & Zim...Now they cannot cheat and win like used to do before....umpire S Rana won soo many matches for Pakis than Imran ever did...hahaha
They needed to introduce them because the world was laughing at their constant cheating. The Coca-Cola is more use for you, Waquar and Wasim used the ring pulls to scratch the ball!
@capio78 if u love cricket then u won't be stupid about it. reverse swing is an art, the english team used it to win the ashes and everybody loved it.
@imadeelshahid Pakistani's didn't introduce neutral umpires themselves. Neutral umpires were brought in on the back of their painfully obvious cheating and bias umpiring in this series. It was the Pakistani ineptitude that caused neutral umpires. Which regardless, we can all agree is a good thing.
@vicavox Pakistan against West Indies in the 80's tour to Pakistan introducted neutral empires, Imran Khan's speech in ICC Awards, where all the cream of generation were present when he spokie about this every body smiled in admiration that you are right, but Pakistan won't get the credit for it because they are not white.
Yes it was ridiculous how he put his finger up so quickly and there was too much doubt to give it out but it wasn't quite the awful decision everyone apart from me seems to think it was.
I realise I'm the only person in the World that thinks this but over 2 years on,I still maintain the Gatting decision wasn't that bad.
If you keep pausing it,you get to the exact frame where the ball struck his pad and I think there's a chance it just hit him in line with part of off stump and that there was a chance it would've hit the stumps if(and I think it was)the ball was a googly or a top spinner.
Gatting's reaction is hilarious - head in hands like some one has just eaten his tea. Seriously though the sub continent umpires are a joke. The Pakistanis as well - if not happy with a decision they threaten to walk off. Any other nation done that?
Define yourself, kid. Define your use of the term 'racist'. And then question whether this word applies to you, given your own discriminating sentence at the end of your comment.
@obaid009 what have I said that is racist. Pakistan walked off the pitch because they were not happy with the decision the umpire made. That was disgraceful. I doesn't makeme a racist though. The video is funny - Gatting's head on his bat when he realises that Botham and Gooch have scoffed all the ham and tomato sandwiches and only left him tuna...
stj1003,First,i know nobodys loves the aussies cause they cheat but set one record straight for the fact that warne will be the greatest leggie of all-time and there is nothing you can do about it, anyway warne isnt a chucker, your friendly pals,Sri Lanka have a huge chucker called Muttiah Muralitharan!
I feel at that time Board of the host counties had something to do with this kind of umpiring. There were no involvement of the ICI in umpires selection and also umpires did not have chance or charm to get into ICI elite panel as that was non existent at that time.
hahahahahahahahahah lolzzzzzz hahahahahahahahahahahhehehehehehehehehe lolzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz hahahahahahahahahahahahaha hehehehehehehehehehehehehe lolzzzzzzz is it enough or u want me 2 laugh more????????????
Although it was a bad decision but also remember that it was the Pakistan team who brought the idea of neutral umpiring into international cricket to eliminate such incidents.

I'm sure his finger went up as the bowler released the ball, cheating bastard

Back in the 80's Pakistanis were robbed of their share of matches by bad umpiring too. Don't forget it was Imran Khan who started the neutral umpires we have now. Worst Umpires are produced by India. Want proof? How many Indians are in the elite panel? The worst umpire still around has to be Ashoka De Silva.
lestephenois1 1 year ago
thats how pakistan won most of its matches in the 80's and 90's. Today, with nuetral umpires, the Pakistan team can't win a match!
LickinMuhLips 1 year ago
@LickinMuhLips i see..thats why they won the cup in 92..came very close to winning in 99 too but they let aus win..pak were always a better team than shitty england ..thats for sure...

thank god that the umpire didn't start celebrating after he gave him out. anyways, it was a stupid overrated batsman vs a stupid overrated bowler contest amidst a cheating umpire. cricket at its worst.
ethianx 2 years ago
One of the worst umpiring decisions ever. And to make it worse, Gatting was given out before the appeal went up. UNBELIEVABLE
Tehui1974 2 years ago
not realy. it might be wrong decsion, but apeal was from keeper, slip, gully, ya bowler react late. but that was not out.
rizee7 2 years ago
Look how quick the umpire's hand gets raised compared to the appeal
Tehui1974 2 years ago
Tehui is right, it's simultaneous.
Frederickg27 1 year ago
Good tactics by Pakistan imo, fielding one of their players at umpiring position!
Finger went up before the appeal! Hit him a mile outside off stump and was definitely playing at that, any other umpire they would not have even appealed, they knew their man.
ashliski 2 years ago
Poor old Gatt! Glad England don't play the 'stan too often! There's always controversy in a bad way; this example, the 'Inzi refuses to take the field' thing, ball tampering, Afridi swivelling... And no-one likes to tour there either.

I was unable to watch it (I'm English, so our national sport is not televised, and I was on holiday, and not in South Africa). But I understand Colly guided the boys through to safety AGAIN. Man for a crisis. They'll probably talk about fdropping him now, because he doesn't take many wickets. Must go to Crikinfo now..

The umpire is like waiting when the ball is gonna hit the pads, no matter where it hits, ITS OUT!!
he gives out even before the bowler appeals LOL
DJindiandevil 2 years ago 2
They say if its out then umpire can give it out on his on whether the players appeal or not i witnessed the same thng when murali picked 9 wickets against Zimbabwe and wid one wicket to fall vass got nick of tailender and no one appeald so that murali can claim 10 wicket haul but i guess darrel harper gave it out with out any appeal so hw cld u guyz blame this umpire
BBASECC 2 years ago
No, tjhat's not true. An umpire may not give a batsman out without an appeal from the fielding side according to the Laws of Cricket.

no, that is an awful decision. Look how far his leg is outside the off stump. You can't give that out - unless the batsman isn't attempting to play a shot - which Gatting was....
billmc23 2 years ago 2
Pakistanis are the biggest "cheaters" the game has seen...Thank god there are nuetral umpires now..Look at Pakistan currently, they are 7th in Test rankings just above WI & Zim...Now they cannot cheat and win like used to do before....umpire S Rana won soo many matches for Pakis than Imran ever did...hahaha
amitg123 2 years ago
if u say pakistan are cheater's then how come PAKISTANI's introduced NEUTRAL UMPIRES and THIRD UMPIRE into cricket.
Surely your mind has gone out drinking newly launched shit cola.
imadeelshahid 2 years ago 27
@imadeelshahid
They needed to introduce them because the world was laughing at their constant cheating. The Coca-Cola is more use for you, Waquar and Wasim used the ring pulls to scratch the ball!
capio78 1 year ago
@capio78 if u love cricket then u won't be stupid about it. reverse swing is an art, the english team used it to win the ashes and everybody loved it.
imadeelshahid 1 year ago 2
@imadeelshahid tastes nice
lmaorut 1 year ago
@imadeelshahid Pakistani's didn't introduce neutral umpires themselves. Neutral umpires were brought in on the back of their painfully obvious cheating and bias umpiring in this series. It was the Pakistani ineptitude that caused neutral umpires. Which regardless, we can all agree is a good thing.
vicavox 1 year ago
@vicavox Pakistan against West Indies in the 80's tour to Pakistan introducted neutral empires, Imran Khan's speech in ICC Awards, where all the cream of generation were present when he spokie about this every body smiled in admiration that you are right, but Pakistan won't get the credit for it because they are not white.
imadeelshahid 1 year ago
Yes it was ridiculous how he put his finger up so quickly and there was too much doubt to give it out but it wasn't quite the awful decision everyone apart from me seems to think it was.
usernameemanresu 2 years ago 2
I realise I'm the only person in the World that thinks this but over 2 years on,I still maintain the Gatting decision wasn't that bad.
If you keep pausing it,you get to the exact frame where the ball struck his pad and I think there's a chance it just hit him in line with part of off stump and that there was a chance it would've hit the stumps if(and I think it was)the ball was a googly or a top spinner.
TBC
usernameemanresu 2 years ago
you can only really laugh - no matter where you come from. The umpire's finger was up before the bowler appealed
chelseafclondon 2 years ago
the funny thing about is both batsman and umpire have predetermined their decisions even before the ball is bowled .
batsman wanted to play sweep and umpire finger was itching

Gatting's reaction is hilarious - head in hands like some one has just eaten his tea. Seriously though the sub continent umpires are a joke. The Pakistanis as well - if not happy with a decision they threaten to walk off. Any other nation done that?

fuck off man, u racist, i know how much england and australia play fairly, they r bloody cheats.........

Define yourself, kid. Define your use of the term 'racist'. And then question whether this word applies to you, given your own discriminating sentence at the end of your comment.
stevewithak 2 years ago
@obaid009 what have I said that is racist. Pakistan walked off the pitch because they were not happy with the decision the umpire made. That was disgraceful. I doesn't makeme a racist though. The video is funny - Gatting's head on his bat when he realises that Botham and Gooch have scoffed all the ham and tomato sandwiches and only left him tuna...

Warne took duiretics, which is a masking agents for drugs. He took duiretics because he took drugs and to cover it.

He got away from chucking because He is an aussie, white and a racist.

I feel at that time Board of the host counties had something to do with this kind of umpiring. There were no involvement of the ICI in umpires selection and also umpires did not have chance or charm to get into ICI elite panel as that was non existent at that time.
