the movie is based on true events but the story is exaggerated. spartans were trained to be gay so they would protect each other better (and it worked). if you dont like that then im sorry, thats just the way it is and it isnt like i told them to be gay. and furthermore the spartans and greeks actually lost that war. spartans were kick ass soldiers though. and i wish they were still existent. no offense to anyone reading this and it is not directed at anyone in particular.
@3halo360xbox no the spartans and greeks didnt lose the war...they lost the battle. if they lost the war me and u would be speaking persian right now or farsi, whatever its called.
@GREdimitraki12 They did what? They were first. But they brought not much. And nobody really cared about their language. Thousand years latin was much more common. And do you speak latin? Perhaps the greek would speak persian. But most that speak the englisch language today are descendants of some completely different. People that probably wouldn't have been influenced by the persians at all. Maybe except of a war in which the persians would have been crushed.
@TheIncredibleCG come on man dont make me go all psycho history geek on you. the romans cherished the greek language more than they did theirs. every student in ancient rome was required to know at least the basics of the greek language and to write it. also greek literature was the main focus in most roman schools. and we cant leave out the fact the romans perfected what they found in Greece, none of which would be there in the first place if the persians beat the spartans
@GREdimitraki12 And this influenced us in what way? In medieval times every learned man was teached Latin. But that did not make the people talk that language. Now less then ever. Just one simple sentence. The Greek where awesome, but do we speak Greek? No? So why should we speak persian, when the Greek would have lost? There is no logic in that.
@TheIncredibleCG my point in the previous comment was that the roman empire eventually spread around europe what they found in greece. and much of what we have now came from rome. as a greek speaker i recognize the greek roots in most indo-european languages and if persia were to defeat the 300 spartans we wouldnt see these roots. thats just one example.
@GREdimitraki12 Now we can see the point approach. The Greek influenced some things. But not only because the Romans "spread" around europe. In medieval times the Greek philosophy was very appreciated and has been studied very often. Aristoteles was seen as something like the godfather of the thinking humanity itself. That was the reason for the most common influences in the european languages. But it's right, that Aristoteles anyway would have been different due to the persians.
@3halo360xbox The Spartans were pretty much the worst society that ever existed. It is true they were "kick ass soldiers", but their society was built entirely on slavery, considered women to be worthless except as mechanisms for producing more soldiers, and routinely waged wars of aggression against their neighbors. In stark contrast to contemporaries like the Athenians, the Corinthians or even the Macedonians, the Spartans produced little real art or culture. War was just about all they did.
@Destroyer1657 That may be true, but the Persian Immortals were only a single unit in the Persian army. They didn't represent the entire Persian civilization. The Spartans, on the other hand, were an entire civilization dedicated to nothing but war.
@iOwnKunts Those two things aren't exclusive. A society can produce one of history's great armies and still be horribly, horribly evil. In fact, the two go together quite often (see Genghis Khan, Ivan the Great, etc etc). War isn't a very good thing to center your society around. If going by modern standards of morality, the Spartans ought to be the villains and the Persians ought to be the heroes, since the Persian empire of this time did NOT practice slavery and treated women slightly better.
@dark7element all I'm trying to say is just because they were different to the moral standards today, doesn't necessarily make them bad or evil. Different times and places, etc.
@iOwnKunts So, it's okay if a society is built on slavery, treats women like animals, attacks every city they can reach, institutionalizes pedophilia, and hunts slaves for sport? They aren't necessarily evil because that's their 'culture'? I'm not willing to accept that level of moral relativism.
Even compared to their contemporaries, Spartan society was horrible. True, the other Greeks had rather f**ked up societies themselves, but the Spartans were a whole other level of bloodlust.
@dark7element as i said, they were kick ass SOLDIERS because they cared only for war. now when it came to being civil and decent, i would have to agree with you.
@3halo360xbox Homosexuality was nothing surprising in ancient Greece. But that does not mean everyone was gay. Often they liked little boys, so paedophilia was even more common. Perhaps you even confuse this with some ancient units where really only gays were recruited ( seleucidic empire) or the fellowship of Alexander.
if someone wants to see the LEWNIDAS statue...he has just to go 140 km before Athen.....I m sorry...BUT THE HISTORY ITS TRUE.....all europeans must be gratefull of lewnidas and themistoklis...If they didnt have done what they did...we all europeans would speak persish now and forget everything you know about demokracy...RESPECT for all the people who fighting for their values..
I advice reading Herodotus the Histories, it covers alot more then just the battle at Thermopylae, but it does have the battle in there, and also yes it was roughly 300 vs. a million quoted "They drank the rivers dry"
Persian had no slavery? the story isn true? what kind of jerk are u boy?grow up, read history and stfu..of course they were not 300 against a million , of course xerxes was not as feminine as in the film ute the stroy itself is truth..efialtes is a greek word and means nightmare..but these are facts a human with your IQ wont understand..

I repeat, this movie it for entertainment, but it is bases on a true story, The "Hot Gates" as the call it, have come up in history countless times, always with the same theme of few standing against many. The Hot Gates are a real place, as was this story, but again the movie is exaggerated, but if you wanted to make money, you'd make it like this NOT make it a historical documentary, the movie is a movie the history is history, movie takes from history, stretches the realism, and there money!
Persians are'nt Black, They have never been nude(picture, Persepolis)and Persia is and was the only empire that has never had slavery(read history).300 is full of lies and in fact the story is a dream CAZ an empire from India to Macedonia had no need to fight with 300 soldier of a defeated army!they just could blow them out-the best

The spartans were not afraid to fight the persians! what are you on about? Spartans were bred for this a spartan would not ask how many just where are they. The persians were not all slaves either as any army they would have Sword fodder (slaves) but they still would have some veterans, but dont think of this film as a historical fact, everythings exagerated...........
Ive studied greek history and mythology intencly (sp?) And I know exacly what this is. I also know for a fact that the movie 300 is based on the comic-book (basically), that is based on the battle of thermopolay (sp?).
I know, because I watched some videos on the making of 300, and they clearly stated that same fact.
What an idiot. You can't spell intensely, or the name of a battle you have "studied"? Haha, and nice that you added that your credibility is from watching a "making the movie" documentary, not reading or studying mythology.
FYI the movie is the account given by "Dilios", basically a battle cry, to rally the whole of Sparta against the Persian army. The entire story is his personal account of what happened, both real and exaggerated, to rally the Spartans.
Wrong, it's based on a comic book, which is based on greek mythology, a true or false story written by Herodotos. The difference between 300 and Troy is that Troy is more realistic and the movie isn't made literally like Homeros wrote the story. It would have been fricking weird if they had.
300 is a OK movie, but I hope someday they'll make a more realistic one with less "fantasy", like The 300 Spartans movie from 1962.
arguing on the internet is like running in speacial olympics. even if you win you are still retarded so stop arguing. the war was like thousands of years ago anyway. this is just a music vid
Okay, EVERY empire had slaves at one point. Yes, the Persians were ill-equipped for the job. The Persians were played to be more evil then they were, yes.
All the same, the Persians were defeated. And I never questioned their civility.
I don't think you've EVER read a textbook, so I'd be quiet.
I'd recommend looking at the different dates each of the events were set... 300 was created for Hollywood style action, not historical accuracy. Despite that, the Spartans and thousands of other Greeks that fought there wavered down the large numbers of Persians against them.
sparta is the only war population and his economy and policity are baset on war... the barbarian population was the same but they are not a population whit a society based on war they are a simple warrior
sorry about destroying your homoerotic fantasy but 300 or even 1000 people can't even produce nearly enough energy to even hold their ground against supposedly tens of thousands well armed and well trained soldiers
actually they stood their ground for 2 to 3 days i think... just open a history book man... read about the place where the battle happened, the people and how it happened.. please........
Yeah, the spartans had about 3 slaves each to carry their equipment and stuff, but the Persian army wasn't ALL trained with professional soldiers. You're telling me Xerxes invaded Greece with 500,000-1,000,000 veterans? ...I don't think so.
I'm afraid they're teaching you lies then. The 300 Spartans, together with another 6000 Greeks and 700 Thespians actually only fought 80,000 Persians, and killed only 20,000. Which is still pretty awesome, but not nearly as awesome as the 'fake' Spartans, ofcourse.
On the other hand, there were a total of 2,641,610 persians, but the Spartans never got to see all of those.
actualy there was 300 σπαρτιατες 1000 τεγεατες και μαντινεις μισοι μισοι 120 απο τον ορχομενο τις αρκαδιας 1000 απο τιν υπολοιπη αρκαδια.400 απο κορινθο 200 απο φλειουντα 80 απο μυκηνες 700 θεσπιεις 400 θηβαιη 1000 φωκεις so do the maths its 5000 againts 1.000.000!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and they last for 3 days imagine if instead of 300 spartans there was 10.000!! they would never have passed.SOURCE=[ΙΝ greek ΗΡΟΔΟΤΟΣ ΙΣΤΟΡΙΑΙ](ANCIENT HISTORIAN)
Ok you seem to be greek I guess you know it the best x3 I hate these guys which never heard of Leonidas or Thermopylae until 300, but then: "Whooga, I KNOW IT and no one else!!!

Greek here too..I agree completly...Pes ta re.

The spartans were not afraid to fight the persians! what are you on about? Spartans were bred for this a spartan would not ask how many just where are they. The persians were not all slaves either as any army they would have Sword fodder (slaves) but they still would have some veterans, but dont think of this film as a historical fact, everythings exagerated...........
its entertainment!
SurfBodDave 3 years ago 2
Actually there were 250,000 persians that attacked not 1 million
Anriel2 3 years ago 2
Yes but its still a great number againist 800 Greeks....yes the movie is about the battle at hot gates but there are many mistakes..
Rendeemer1 3 years ago
its based on a comic book.....not a history book.
muhabla 3 years ago
actualy it is not based on a comic book haha,
its greek mythology, just like the battle of Troy,
qwertyhoo 3 years ago
Ive studied greek history and mythology intencly (sp?) And I know exacly what this is. I also know for a fact that the movie 300 is based on the comic-book (basically), that is based on the battle of thermopolay (sp?).
I know, because I watched some videos on the making of 300, and they clearly stated that same fact.
muhabla 3 years ago
What an idiot. You can't spell intensely, or the name of a battle you have "studied"? Haha, and nice that you added that your credibility is from watching a "making the movie" documentary, not reading or studying mythology.
FYI the movie is the account given by "Dilios", basically a battle cry, to rally the whole of Sparta against the Persian army. The entire story is his personal account of what happened, both real and exaggerated, to rally the Spartans.
novastepp 3 years ago
Wrong, it's based on a comic book, which is based on greek mythology, a true or false story written by Herodotos. The difference between 300 and Troy is that Troy is more realistic and the movie isn't made literally like Homeros wrote the story. It would have been fricking weird if they had.
300 is a OK movie, but I hope someday they'll make a more realistic one with less "fantasy", like The 300 Spartans movie from 1962.

And for the record, it's spelled Thermopylae :)
1234321mike1234321 3 years ago
It was inspired by a book that was based on the battle of Thermopylae... So you're right and wrong.

and the persian armies were very skilled, well equipped, trained, and organized unlike their depiction in 300
they civilized large lands like babylon and freed the jews there
300 just plays off the masses ignorance ans stupidity
cynasty69 3 years ago
You're probably from Iran...
Okay, EVERY empire had slaves at one point. Yes, the Persians were ill-equipped for the job. The Persians were played to be more evil then they were, yes.
All the same, the Persians were defeated. And I never questioned their civility.
I don't think you've EVER read a textbook, so I'd be quiet.
bjd020695 3 years ago
i read that the persians had shields designed to withstand hacking weapons rather than stabing. is that right?
LTSnapperSS 3 years ago
I'd recommend looking at the different dates each of the events were set... 300 was created for Hollywood style action, not historical accuracy. Despite that, the Spartans and thousands of other Greeks that fought there wavered down the large numbers of Persians against them.

sweeeeeeeet!i need to see the movie though....we studied it in history.....it was radom...

sorry about destroying your homoerotic fantasy but 300 or even 1000 people can't even produce nearly enough energy to even hold their ground against supposedly tens of thousands well armed and well trained soldiers
cynasty69 3 years ago
actually they stood their ground for 2 to 3 days i think... just open a history book man... read about the place where the battle happened, the people and how it happened.. please........
0oiluj0 3 years ago
You know, the Spartans could do that sort of thing. They were crazy like that.
The Persian soldiers weren't well trained, either. They were slaves, equipped with knives and bows & arrows.
They were also in a ridge, and the Phalanx was built for exactly defending ridges.
It's entirely possible.
bjd020695 3 years ago
that's another lie you believe
persians did not have slaves spartans did
xerxes was not a flaming homo the spartans really were
at least know a little real history before you spew garbage
cynasty69 3 years ago
You're right and you're way off wrong.
Yeah, the spartans had about 3 slaves each to carry their equipment and stuff, but the Persian army wasn't ALL trained with professional soldiers. You're telling me Xerxes invaded Greece with 500,000-1,000,000 veterans? ...I don't think so.

ukrainianboi1 3 years ago
