I will always think the reason why these two didn't come together in the end was because Gwen was always using Daniel to tell her she wasn't a bad person or as self absorbed as she appeared to be. IMO from when I was watching Daniel was always pained to see that she was not the woman that she could be and Mirah was a woman that was already in that stage of "I know who I am" and by the end she wasn't afraid anymore but man I really wanted it to be Gwen!

Based on one of my favourite novels of all time... Daniel Deronda by George Elliot (alias Marian Evans) the great English Victorian novelist. I defy anyone to read this long book and not be truly entranced by love, religion, fate, hope, destiny and the human condition. There is a section at end when Gwendolen speaks to Daniel a long speech that will make men and women cry. Love it.

I have seen the miniserie in a whole night, only a night, hoping that they were going to be together...but deeply in my heart I knew he was going to ended up with Mirah.. and this displeaces me a lot! throughout the series, it is evident that Daniel loves Gwendolen. it's also evident that he feels something for Mirah, but not along the same line of his feelings for Gwendolen. when Daniel found out that he was Jewish, he made it his purpose in life to help his people. IMO, i think Daniel simply married Mirah due to that purpose, and also to the knowledge that Mirah would be a more suitable partner. the scene of Sir Hugo and Daniel at the end reaffirms that thought.
