@TheMidnadarkness Let me know if you need more tips, I know the video isn't the best teaching video, it demonstrates how it can work but I can give you more details on how to make it work, if needed. BTW, be careful about putting human emotion into your horse, it's not that your horse "is not patient" s/he has just developed a habit of not standing still while you mount. You can break this habit with good training. You will need to practice patients! :-)
Good question. Same principle, but you'll need to add a go forward cue, like a tap on the butt or a kissing or clucking sound and be sure that you're not pulling on the reins, sending a mixed message. Some horses are super sensitive so hold onto a lock of mane to keep your hand still.
hey you with the computer - thanks for the comments. I have a new video camera and plan to post some new improved videos soon. I hope listeners get the general idea from what I've posted so far and can learn how to improve their communication skills and build a better/safer relationship with their horse by watching my technically challenged videos.
you with the camera! Do you have to be so loud! get someone else to do the camera work then you can do your talk from a distance. Also needs more commentary and wind guard for mic! You spoiled the vid, by not setting the thing up with the rider first!Good Luck!
Question: My mare i bought 12 yrsold Quarter horse X TB And she will eather try to kick me will i try to mount or she will spin,Turn anything to not let me mount.
My Thoroughbred gelding doesn't stand still for me to mount, and he's 16.2hh so it sure doesn't make it easy, and when I DO get on he goes tense and last time took off bucking. I have this way of teaching them to stand still while mounting and I think you should try it too.
It is uncomfortable for the horse when you mount from the ground as it twists the horse's back towards you when you mount, and can after a lot of time mounting from the ground, damage the horse's back, so use a mounting...
STEP 7 is what you do when they don't stand still because it makes theh orse uncomfortable and teaches them that standing still is much better.
STEP 7:Make it uncomfortable for her 2 b moving around by asking her wth the lunge line 2 trot 2 the left, trot 2 the right, trot 2 the left, trot 2 the right. Don't lunge her! Just ask her 2 keep moving her feet from left 2 right n half circles round..
block and make sure you have plenty of time when you do this method as it can take a long time depending on the horse, and you have to be patient and not give up until the method is done. And remember, after each step when the horse stands still, stroke her coat and talk to her softly. don't pat her just calmly stroke her hair and praise her. And do ALL of the steps on BOTH sides of your horse.
I find it much easier and it has worked well for me...every time he takes a step foward I lounge him, or if I´m in the round pen I make him take 4 or 5 circles. After a few of those believe me he will not move.
I like the method I show here because it not only teaches the horse to stand for mounting but it also teaches the horse to understand the meaning of pulling on the reins. (When I pull on the inside rein I want the outside hip to move to the outside; then when walking up to the mounting block I pull GENTLY on to the outside rein, asking the inside hip to stay to the inside and not move away.)
This lesson is more about connecting the rein to the hip, so that when you walk up to the mounting block, by holding the outside rein, you can hold the outside hip in towards the mounting block. I have seen many people pull their horses up to a mounting block by pulling on the inside rein; this technique is much more effective.
i think this is to teach the horse that it is easier to syand still the walk around in circles and backwards,i have trouble doing that.I think its just easier to stand still.
I know how the horse feels i can't stand even sit still for 5 seconds.
my horse does this to me all the time my horse is not patient

Nice! What about if your horse walks backward when you go to mount? Same principle?

Then once she stops dismount and stroke her neck.
Now you repeat the process. Be consistent.

-If she moves, go back to STEP 7, and after step 7, back to step 1 again.
STEP 5:Stand in the stirrup but do not swing your leg over.
-If your horse stands still, move onto step 6.
-If she moves, move onto STEP 7, then back to STEP 1.
STEP 6:Gently swing your leg over and softly sit in the saddle.
-If the horse stands perfectly still, dismount immediantly and give him TONS of praise.
-If she moves after you sit down, gently bend her head to the side, 2wrds your knee til she stops...
