I agree with aelwenn. I have watched the point where Eiga performs kaeshi do against Miyazaki's yoko men again and again and again and again. And everytime I see it I think Eiga should have gotten that point based on pure mechanics. I know Eiga admitted to being hit on the men in his documentary but I think he is saying that out of sheer respect. A true sign of strong character on Eiga's part. Don't get me wrong I love Miyazaki as well. His kote techniques are awesome!
Kendo is exciting and all but i wish there was a practice where you had like a spot or something thing on each of your vital spots for example, head, neck, stomach, heart, legs and arms and you had to hit you opponents spots while protecting your own similar to kendo but you didn't have to stand in that stance you were allowed to choose your fighting style how you wanted to fight
Eiga said that Miyazaki won because he put all his blow into the men despite he knew Eiga's do coming, and Eiga's do was just calculation. This is KENDO. Eiga's words have very much more weight than you think. His purity, modesty, and appreciation to the Miyazaki's blow. What Japanese wish to spread through kendo around the world is just right here. :)
He would know Miyazaki didn't hit the men but deeply thought out by himself why Miyazaki won then and what was different between Miyazaki and Eiga. Then, he finally realized winning and losing don't matter.
The first men was not a men though. The point (do) was clearly pour Eiga If you watch it slow you see that he doesn't even hit Eiga's men. That was by the way a bit of a problem in Japan at the time.
If he expected Eiga to do Kaeshi waza which was probably the case, he didn't succeed in doing his yoko men.First: if you watch it closely , you can notice that his shinai only toched Eiga's shinai and not his men.Second: yoko men must hit the upper part of the men which is absolutely not the case here.Even if we admit that Miyazaki's shinai did reach Eiga's men, it was most likely the ear area that is not counted as a ippon. That is why it was a bit of a problem in Japan after this competition.
@dante986@dante986 - Actually, aelwenn is right. Watch it carefully. Miyazaki didn't hit the side men. Miyazaki's kensaki hit around Eiga's left ear. Even Eiga parried it. I know you might have seen Eiga's documentary and he, on that document, admitted that Miyazaki hit the men. However, Eiga most knows everything what happend at the time.
oh yeh dun forget miyazaki masahiro..he won 7 all japan kendo championships and eiga has 1 so far. still makes miyazaki masahiro the greatest kendo player in the whole history !!! yeaaaaaaah !!!!
yes it was more a tap...it was weaker than his usual men which has a pow effect. but still that was an open shot...tweaked up a bit more and that was a point.
i dun think there' s many ppl in the world that can men kaeshi do Eiga...unbelievable, i think there's only one guy in the world and that's Miyazaki Masahiro.
wanna know why did the last ipon count? i had the impression you had to swing the shinai back significantly and go for the "men" to consider it a strike, but the last one looked like a "tap" cause Miyazaki just raised it a above and went for the men

Actually Miyazaki's Men cut did hit, it was a yoko-men strike.
He did it because he expected Eiga to try Kaeshi Do, the easiest way around a kaeshi waza is to cut in a different line, therefore Yoko-men.

Then again, there is no doubt that both Eiga sensei and Miyazaki sensei are great kendo masters.

Hi guys, forgive me of my ignorance,
wanna know why did the last ipon count? i had the impression you had to swing the shinai back significantly and go for the "men" to consider it a strike, but the last one looked like a "tap" cause Miyazaki just raised it a above and went for the men
myRoxas 3 years ago
it's a "small men". in order to score a point you don't necessarily have to bring the shinai back all the way over your head
phantom1412 3 years ago
By the way, it was Eiga who scored the last ippon ("the small men").
