If anybody here works on Wall Street (I do). You'll know that at some firms, EVERYONE is a VP... take Goldman Sachs. You have analysts and associates (low level), then basically everyone jumps up to VP... so you actually do have a ton of VPs.
The question is, did the movie spell acquisitions wrong on purpose? I like to think that it was supposed to be wrong in the movie - that with all the scrutiny they missed one of the few substantive bits of information on the whole cards.
Being deranged and strange as I am, I decided to take a close, hard look at each of the four cards. You can't really tell in the 240p and 360p uploads, but they ARE all subtely different; not different enough for it to matter under normal circumstances, but different none-the-less. If forced to rank them, I'd say Van Patten's is the best, followed by Allen, then Bryce and finally Bateman. It's interesting that Bateman's was the standout worst whereas the other three were much harder to rank...
@SirBroadsword Personally I prefer Bateman's, followed by Allen's, then Van Patten, then Bryce. Graphic design is always subjective though, different people like different things :)
@BigOldToe Keep in mind that Bateman doesn't have raised lettering, or a textured card. Unless he neglected to mention is, which is extremely unlikely.
@SirBroadsword you need to have studied print-design or something similiar, such as work within the field or go visit some very custom higher-end printers to know completely about what they are discussing. such as the "eggshell white" has a very slight difference to any plain old white. there are many options, variables, and luxuries when it comes to business cards in the real world with big businesses, and many catering specialty printer shops that do such work.
Oh my god, it even has a water mark. They really nailed this scene in the movie. In the book I felt this scene was less impactful but they nailed it in the movie
@g4be94 That's a topic of discussion and open to individual interpretation. Some say they could all be VP's of different departments, others think they may not actually be VP's but just put it on their cards to look better.
Personally I like to believe it's a story-telling device that demonstrates the yuppie culture when everyone looked and acted the same (one of the main themes of the story).
@BigOldToe I concur with your theory. I have probably watched this film about 50+ times and I swear, I learn or notice something new with each viewing. On the surface, and for those that just do not "get it," American Psycho's exercise in perfect irony is totally missed. There isn't another film that better captures and mocks the NYC 80's Yuppie scene. Honestly, everything about this film is ace. Thanks for posting this with embedding. I am so glad to share it w/ friends on FB!
@BigOldToe I... never noticed that they spelled that wrong. Do you suppose one guy honestly got it wrong, and everybody else mindlessly copied him without thinking about it?
Bryce still wins

Note that they all spelled "acquisitions" wrong; they left out the c.

@BigOldToe It's not a topic of discussion.. in investment banking a VP is above an associate and below MD.. it's just a position
metalasian 5 months ago 3
@metalasian Thanks for letting me know. VP seems like it should be a much higher position that what you've described :D

@Raguleader that is a brilliant point

@Raguleader Possibly, since the whole story revolves around the idea of fitting in with others.

@BigOldToe They all looked very cool, but you havn't seen my card yet.
Times New Roman lettering and colour is something called "plain white", no watermark. What do you think?

@Quex01 Impressive.

@g4be94 VP in I-banking just means it is above associate level. It's only mid-high level position.

"That's bone," a line that would ONLY work if said by Patrick Bateman
