Yes they were ahead of their time and Thereze admited in an interview that they suffered from crap management and Record label mis management also. The songs they made with Trevor Horn were classic pop ie Videotheque, Hand Held in Black and White and Give me Back My Heart and Mirror Mirror. These songs were the first Hits that Trevor Horn had as producer.
When I was a kid me and my mam used to sing to Dollar. R.I.P my beautiful Mam' Philomena' on your Anniversary. Will always remember you trying to sing the higher notes lol x x x Playing this for you Mam xxx
I was 9 when I got this 7 inch and the Album Shooting Stars, they were great Dollar were. Wish there had have been another album after the Dollar Album, they would have been massive, just one more aAlbum if only. Always loved them.
Hey i met David at a show recently and interviewed his wife "Sue" about her new make up range, please have a look and let me know what you think if you get a chance!!
Come listen to this song and and many other "lost hits" and "chart wonders" from the 70's (and some 80's) on a free internet station, "OffTheCharts"
Go to Live365.com and type OFF THE CHARTS into the search box. Click on the station logo and the stream should begin. The link to the station is also on my YouTube home page.
Thanks to Trevor Horn when he got onto this pair. He was the best producer, and still is, during the late 70's and early 80's. You should hear some of their demo's before Horn worked his magic on the tracks. Frankie Goes to Hollywood, ABC and many other were massive because of Trevor Horn. Beats any modern rubbish my miles.
Excelente Cancion !! prefiero esta a " who were in thwe moon.. " es buena pero esta es Flamante , venia en el otro lado del Disco . . Cesar , Mexico City ; )
lets get something straight this record was on top of the pops say what you want. TOP OF THE POPS is a ICON only top records at that TIME were on the finest tv music programme ever made DOLLAR WAS ON no argument i can remember when POP.s first started ONLY THE BEST were on
I loved DOLLAR - if David had of been from USA I think people might have accepted his attitude - I like his confidence - even though he may lack it!!! Love Theresa xo
guess who we bumped into tonight doing his shopping in Tesco Lakeside Thurrock with his new wife!! yep Mr Van Dey!! still loves himselve, but he and his wife were really lovely.........
Actually 1978 had lots of songs way ahead of it's time - Kate Bush, Blondie, Hot Chocolate, Clout , Ian Dury...to name but a few! - And yes Dollar too!
Good cheesy Pommy Pop music from a time when the world was a simple fun place to live, and before computers and governments hooked in together so they could fuck everybody in the arse and the mouth simultaneously and then charge you with sexual misconduct! 70's & 80's was the high water mark of western civilisation, now everthing is BAN IT!
@DylanMrBob I think you must be refering to my discriptive languge as i used the word 'fuck' only once. To answer your question Yes i do' because that is the true expression of my feelings on this issue. Why are you so offended anyway? Its the truth and anyway i says it the meaning is the same.
To those whom this may concern;- WHERE is the comprehensive c.d. anthology, WHERE is the official videos d.v.d. Thought both were a cert after DVD's jungle malarky but NOTHING! Fans like myself would pay top...ahem..dollar for this stuff so c'mon, the time is NOW!
I know some people will diss the Dollar number as a load of cheesy rubbish, but actually, they were way ahead of their time for '78, using electronic sounds and video effects and pre-empting 80's pop sounds. When everyone else was still wearing flares and doing old-fashioned music.
Great comment. This greatness of this track and some of Dollar's other stuff is obscured by the fact David Van Dey (?) took it upon himself to be a prancing twat.
If Dollar were better managed they would have received more acclaim.
Are you kidding??? What about the likes of Kraftwerk, Human League, Blondie, Giorgio Moroder & Gary Numan etc? Dollar were just a manufactured pop band with catchy tunes.
Dollar were fantastic LONG before Trevor horn got involved, their 1978/79 Debut Album was quite stunning(especially the 'experimental' A side) and spawned 3 hit singles. Classic pop at its finest.
Very early days of Dollar when they just left their teen years and as newmark mentioned its unbelieve nearly 31 yrs ago and it only feels like yesterday.
Never heard this. According to Joel Whitburn this was their only Hot 100 entry in the US peaking at #74 in 1980. I can see why this did not sit well with the US. market. I find this boring. At the same time I prefer their 1988 Erasure remake of "Oh L'Amour". Now the latter is one of those songs that make me think of how much I miss England.
Agree with you that it was brill that nasty, gutter mouth Nikki went before David. I was always a fan of Dollar. They produced some good tunes; and this record was out when I left school aged 16 in 1978 - David must have been 21, 22...
i am not quite sure why, mix of egocentric and lovable vunerability but i voted for him, first time i have ever picked up tthe phone for one of these shows. go david. You are good value.
Tereze has one of those mouths that doesn't seem to move in synch with what she is singing (not that I've been perving at her too much you understand!)
He was, then he formed his own and there were fights, legal action etc. The latest incarnation with him in is called "David Van Day's Bucks Fizz Show". He's now on ITV in "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here" and what a tosser!
Oh! What memories, what memories. It didn't really matter that neither of these two could actually sing - the synergy of their voices is what made it work. That and clever, catchy pop songs , impeccably produced by Trevor Horn. A sure-fire recipe for success. I love this song - one of my favourites from Dollar. Bring back the eighties.
Yes, you are of course absolutely right. Was it from "Hand Held in B & W" through to "Videotheque" , all the tracks on "The Dollar Album" in fact ? Who produced them during the period when they "vanished" only to re-surface with the top ten "Oh l'Amour" ?

no they are not brother and sister..used to go out with each other..her hair was brown to begin with..but thanks to a bottle of hairdye..other hits include mirror mirror..ans give me back my heart
they arent brother and sister- they were engaged to be married but it never happened- theresa married a doctor and now lives in Australia- David runs a Burger van somewhere in England- there big hit was Who were you with in the moonlight
wtf docter= noooo and no they wernt engaged. well she never told me. she just had a son and then married a non-docter in sydney after having another son, sam my best friend.
Happy little throw away song.
