If you try one of the oldest distilleries on the Islands called Arehucas you can really taste the advantage that the extra time and experience gives to Rum. Some of the techniques they use today are an adaptation of ancient sugar cane distilling recipe's used since long before the discovery of the new world.
actually they distilled sugar cane molasses into "rum" in the canary islands long before they even discovered the Americas. The Spanish King actually ordered the relocation of many plantations and sugar specialists from the canary islands to the Caribbean in order to expand and industrialise sugar production as the canary islands became to small to house the industry due to Europe's huge demand for sugar. Canary Islanders were the very first European cultivators to settle in the Caribbean.
hmm so this Ron fellow brews some decent rum? i tried bacardi (bleh!) , captain (ugh...) and screech....(not the REAL screech hehehe) - it wasnt bad..but ..none of these rums ill buy again. im looking for a great solid STRAIGHT drinking rum (ice if anything, no mixes)
Ahh, a sigh of relief. You mention Ron Zacapa as an excellent example of a great rum. It is my personal fav, I have a bottle of the 25 year old XO I have yet to taste. Looking forward to it
I couldn't agree more. Of the Ron Zacapa, I'd say by far the best is their "Straight from the Cask" blend. Outrageously good and sadly, I only seem to be able to get if from friends who go down to the caribbean and pick it up at the duty free for me. Sigh......I wish it were sold in Ontario, Canada.
Diageo, the international company that distributes Johnny Walker, Jose Cuervo and other world famous licors is now distributing Zacapa aswell. so I guess it's a matter of time before it floods Canada

My favourite rum is Mount Gay Extra Old. Actually, I would say that's one of the best spirits available and at a reasonable price too.
