Poor Mack. Once a proud Navy SEAL, now a Pentagon mouthpiece. He makes war or "counterinsurgency" seem like a mall experience. When this episode began, Future Combat Systems was thought to be successful as the buildup in the 1980s. Now its promises are not living up to expectation. Quipped with lame monologue emphasizing "coolness", he misleads his captive audience about the unpredictability of warfare. The secretary of defense who left in 2006 proved inept so that's why I hate this clip.
@5687678 Just give the design job to a gamer/hacker with an engineering degree, and you'll have a nice little robot with agility, lots of scouting ability, and can take out targets with aimbot speed and accuracy if you flip the kill switch...
@gulllars And it will probably have a bunch of useless hardware, be too difficult to mass produce, and cost a billion dollars. I'd give the job to someone who didn't learn everything he knows about war from a video game.
@20324758 Maybe but military specs for hardware are require most things to survive EMP. Some of the very light stuff like those heli drones i'm no so sure of but you'll just have to Google it
@ViolentKisses87 maybe, but is there any electronic device capable of resisting a EMP? i dont think so, the only thing that will resist an EMP will be the soldiers weapons
@aromsolrac01 or they can just proof the UAVs. Making it _resistant_ to EMP attacks can be done with a faraday cage in the chassis or around the voulnerable components. There have been EMP resistant electronic devices for years.

@20324758 actually you can shield electrics quite easily, parallel earth fuses and faraday cages, but no one bothers with the added money and weight if its just jihadist with AK's. Besides, advanced EMPs blow out cities, so the downed drones will be the least of your problems. No light, no communications, no power, no traffic control.
If you think about it the xbox controller is something that every one from 18 to 35 is familiar with. These are vary early concept ideas, and still have a lot of work to be done.
Yes its shock, water, and mud proof. The power source is batteries. As of right now it weighs 10 lbs. As fare as stability of the net work, well why it still has a lot of work to be done it runs over the same backbone as the longbow system and is quite reliable. Over all at this time this kind of technology is slated to be deployed with mechanized units. In another 10 or so years this will be the future of warfare.
microsoft has put a shit load of time researching the best ergonomic design... no need to spend more and they're dirt cheap to replace! definately want to see more of this
Shoot them down with small arms? Please, by the time it's in full use, it'd have sorted the problems out, armor, EMP defense etc. Still, if it's shot down they'll know, that area has hostiles.. :3
From what i gather it is like More eyes on the Field. So if you shoot out one of there eyes, all you are accomplishing is showing them exactly where you are. My biggest worry would be EMP or anything else that can take down the network. they should never put themselves into a position where they NEED these eyes.
I agree regarding eyes on the field. I'm sure though that they are still trained with minimum equipment. I guess they figure, few enemies would have EMP's so no worries on losing the network(s).
If you loose the flying drone or it malfunctions you have a casuality equalling 2/3rds of a platoon since the handfull of men you sent out are not enough anymore.

That robot has to move and respond much faster. In order for it to be an effective tool. Now it's just IED detection and it can be taken out easily.

Is the equipment worn by the soldiers shock, water and mud proof? would an er
rant round take it out?
what powers the equipment the Soldiers wear? batteries equal more weight
does carrying all that extra equipment mean that they cant carry as much ammo and water?
what happens if the system crashes an the boys on the ground have to do it the old fashioned way....
dont mean to sound cynical ... all intel is needed but theres a few what ifs
