A couple of days before the Pornography tour reached its chaotic self-destructive climax in Brussels in June '82, the band played in Lyon (France) and for some technical reason the back-up tape couldn't be played. So Robert counted the band in 1-2-3-4 (!) and babbled for a few seconds into a sample-and-loop pedal and they used that instead. Guess what: babble played backwards still sounds like babble... (or alternatively like elbbab or something).

Yeah, 'poor joe' is the only phrase I was ever able to make out in the 20+ years I've listened to this song. It really is one of the most bizarre songs any band has ever recorded, I think. Love it.

The whole backmasking is pile of shit! Even if in songs there are reversed (mostly "satanic", /let me laugh/) messages, do you really think, the band did it on purpose? Some idiots find satanic message even in love songs. IE. there would be "kiss kiss kiss", in reversed "six, six six". I don't believe in backmasking.

no it aint i have some vinyls onwich you can hear words when you spin them backwards but to do this easy you need a turntable instead of a regular recordplayer for theres no back spin brake on it..

One of the creepiest things i've checked out cure related...i remember the first time i heard "pornography" i was driving down a LONG road heading to the beach where im from...which is a pretty desolate beach...and it just gave me the willies..one of my favortie cure records..

The point is to fuck with a song about that deals with being fucked-up. It's very interesting. And the photo adds to the effect. It's actually not worlds apart from the original beginning and ending, just a lot creepier. Just to ask-are you a Cure fan and fan of this album?

Might be the best way to shit one's pants, really ! What's behind (provided there is anything) is not the point, really. These are just tapes being played turning the bobin manually (hence different speeds for the people talking), which brings this "obscene and quite unhealthy" result. In that, they achieve the goal. Having said that, there could be anything on the tapes, the result would be the same. It's funny how people always seek to know what's behind and try and analyse things.

My belief is that they were wanting to create a chaotic, dislocated (read foreign) and all-round unpleasant experience to start the song with.

How better to do that than mix a couple of distorted audio tracks of everyday banal talk?

I Instantly feel from the beginning of the track that I am an outsider to whatever is going on, and as such, the effect is well created.

Almost being able to pick out words of coherence here and there, but never getting the actal messgage is key to this song

Interesting. I think towards the end you can hear a guy saying BBC-2. It seems some conversations were taped and mixed together to create an atmosphere for this song. It actually, bizarrely, works. 'Pornography' is a cathartic piece of work from one of the most monumental albums of all-time.
