I know that apple crap about their use of "air plane grade aluminum to make their product more recyclable". That just means they are using a rare material, which takes shitload of energy to work with. But what's in it for the environment? What we demand is a global takeback policy, not the excuse to make it worth more money to recycle it.

The idea is to push major manufacturers to go green, which, in the end, will push all manufacturers to go green. Among major manufacturers, only Apple hadn't pledged or made their environmental policy public until recently, when Steve Jobs finally published a 'Greener Apple' letter. So, particularly this campaign was a success for Greenpeace. And it is the consumer who wins here.
I think they do this because Apple is the leader in making enviromentally safe products and because they are a founding member of energy star. Apple has been above the game with getting rid of toxins as fast as it can and it even has it's iMac running with less power than a 60 watt light bulb.

Maybe you saw a video of an e-waste yard, and you saw some Macs in the video (probably hard to pick out from all the non-Macs around them), and so you decided it must be Apple doing it. Big e-waste companies buy in bulk, from dumps, etc. worldwide--places Apple has no control over--and THEY send it to these places.

Certainly Apple could do more to encourage proper recycling of its products, and making products with fewer toxic chemicals, and they should be reminded of that. But my point was that the items Apple takes in for recycling, don't get sent overseas--I think it's important to clarify that.
Also, Apple may be getting unfair marks from Greenpeace--Apple has been doing more than Greenpeace says. Though Greenpeace's efforts are generally in the right direction, a lot of their scoring method might give too much weight to what companies SAY they're going to do, instead of what they ARE doing. Apple is actually a founding member of energy star. Their Imacs, for instance use less power thana 60 watt Light bulb and they are always way head of energy star requirements. Apples has alsp had recycling programs since 1994.

I think all tech producers have to clean up their act. I love my G4 and iPod but I have seen photo evidence of computer related waste in China. Whole landscapes of dead tech. This is great! And it shows one of the few downsides of Apple products: They are "dirty".
Not just if you measure components, but also compared to other producers.
They lead on practicality and design. Why not lead on environmental and sustainable development criteria? Show the world that you're the best, also for future generations!

The idea is to push major manufacturers to go green, which, in the end, will push all manufacturers to go green. Among major manufacturers, only Apple hadn't pledged or made their environmental policy public until recently, when Steve Jobs finally published a 'Greener Apple' letter. So, particularly this campaign was a success for Greenpeace. And it is the consumer who wins here.

I think they do this because Apple is the leader in making enviromentally safe products and because they are a founding member of energy star. Apple has been above the game with getting rid of toxins as fast as it can and it even has it's iMac running with less power than a 60 watt light bulb.

If somebody can go 'green', then it's Apple. This video isn't geared against Apple, but to raise awareness and inspire the consumers to make a change.

I know what you mean, but it's not the name, more the whole image Apple has. They know more about a clean design than most other IT companies, so why not use it as an opportunity to become truly green, beyond just the design. Also, Apple dumps their waste in lovely e-waste yards in China and India, threatening the lives of those living there, due to the toxic fumes. This could easily be changed, which is what this campaign is trying to achieve. Apple will listen to the consumers.

Why would you say that? Maybe you saw a video of an e-waste yard, and you saw some Macs in the video (probably hard to pick out from all the non-Macs around them), and so you decided it must be Apple doing it. Big e-waste companies buy in bulk, from dumps, etc. worldwide--places Apple has no control over--and THEY send it to these places.

Certainly Apple could do more to encourage proper recycling of its products, and making products with fewer toxic chemicals, and they should be reminded of that. But my point was that the items Apple takes in for recycling, don't get sent overseas--I think it's important to clarify that.

Also, Apple may be getting unfair marks from Greenpeace--Apple has been doing more than Greenpeace says. Though Greenpeace's efforts are generally in the right direction, a lot of their scoring method might give too much weight to what companies SAY they're going to do, instead of what they ARE doing. But it looks like all the accusations against Apple have had some effect:

I think all tech producers have to clean up their act. I love my G4 and iPod but I have seen photo evidence of computer related waste in China. Whole landscapes of dead tech. All of it containing toxic waste. Us greedy westerners have to realize the impact our comfortable capitalistic lifestyle has on the hidden third world workforce. I expect most of the 'nay sayers' here will choose to keep their heads firmly planted in the sand. It makes me sad.

thats because china has no standards. they work for basically pennies and their government allows it. Wal-Mart exports 3 billion dollars worth of supplies and waste (paper, and plastic in return for cardboard boxes and such) and imports the same supplies, which are now products, for a revenue of 32 BILLION DOLLARS! i agree we need to change our lifestyle, but so does the rest of the world.

This is great! And it shows one of the few downsides of Apple products: They are "dirty".
Not just if you measure components, but also compared to other producers.
They lead on practicality and design. Why not lead on environmental and sustainable development criteria? Show the world that you're the best, also for future generations!
