  • haha ... this guy has everything covered. Without sounding too eager, just make sure they know you really want to go to Japan. Not "China would be cool as well..."

Japan. That has been 20% of the score, and really much more since enthusiasm about Japan strokes their egos....

  • I would disagree with you about Ziac. I applied with them and got a place, but the pay and the benefits should be researched.

  • Wow this is a great video. Thanks so much for the info!

  • hey, quick question. I'm looking into living in japan and was wondering... would jet or any other major school out there accept graduates from an online school (like university of phoenix)? I haven't seen an answer either way and was hoping you might know.

  • I have no idea. If I hear anything I will post it here.

  • I don't think it would matter, as long as it's an accredited university. But they might ask you about it, and you'd better have a good answer.

But what the hell do I know! I've never went; my interview is in 5 days.

  • Best of luck to you. If you end up in my neighborhood be sure to say hi.

  • Hey Travel4Whit,

First off, thanks for taking the time to post these informative videos. So, I just got an e-mail saying I'm an alternate, as I discovered you were, too. How did you feel about this initially, and what made you fairly confident that you would get called to go over? Do you happen to know the average number of alts who get called back?

    Thanks again~

  • The day I got the letter informing me that I was an alternate I went out to dinner with a friend. It was the first time in my life that I ordered and ate every possible course on the menu. (not counting set menus or formal dinners).

Then I just went on with my life. I felt a bit lost and looked for another job. Until the email came telling me to go to Japan.

  • okay, i was just worried because i heard that they start asking questions in japanese during the interview

  • i heard nova went bankrupt...what if i don't know any japanese before the interview? is that bad?

  • Nova went bankrupt, then it was restarted as G-communications. Most of the same staff.

Not knowing any Japanese is just fine. Most JETS don't know any, some even after a year hardly know any. In fact some schools still request JETs without any Japanese experience.

  • It's so funny watching this now after having had my interview. It's so much less nerve-racking!

Anyone who has yet to interview, best of luck! You'll be nervous, but it's really not that bad. Just do your best to put your best self out there for 30 little minutes in spite of the anxiety! Ganbatte ne.

  • Thanks this was really helpful. I applied and am going for the interview in two weeks.

  • hopefully jet program is still around in 2012 when i apply

  • Why wouldn't it be around?

  • i have been hearing that funding for it has been dropping, but idk for sure

  • It has been dropping but not that fast. It will still be around in 2012. The hard part is more people know about it so competition is increasing.

  • Yeah I'm sure funding has dropped everywhere. The world economy is obviously having some issues, but I don't think it's so much that the whole thing will close. That's way to big of a conclusion.

  • The JET program has been static for a while. The salary used to be really good, these days a lot of other programs have caught up a bit. It is still the best but if it had increased with the times it would be even better. So inflation/ changes in the English teaching market have made JET a little cheaper, relatively.

Anyway they still have trouble getting people to work out in small towns so the JET program is secure.

  • By "they" do you mean other programs? And what other programs are there that you think are abouth the same or even better than JET?

  • Yes, I mean JET. I also mean the Japanese government and the society as a whole.

JET set ups can be awkward and I am sure there are bad ones but as far as teaching in Japan goes it is the best paying and usually supports its teachers really well.

  • Thanks soooo much! This was really helpfull and very encouraging!! I submitted an application to JET in November...still waiting for results...Good luck to anyone else who applied!

  • Does it help to e TEOSL certificate? My university offers this and I am aiming to get it.

  • Yes it helps. I don't know how much but I've researched a ton of info on Jet and it does help you.

  • is it possible to go on the JET programme with a friend?

  • you can apply with a friend... you can even apply with a husband or wife... but they dont guarantee you'll be placed with that person... but usually it works out from my understanding

  • Thanks a lot buddy. Very helpful info.

I just submitted my application and am HOPING I get an interview...

  • Hi, I'm very interested in teaching english in japan for a year (or more!), possibly as a part of the jet program.

The problem is, I'm an asian american, and I've heard there is a hiring bias with a preference for "white faces," in the eikawas (if not necessarily in jet). Is this the case?

Have you met any AA's teaching english in Japan? Have they shared any of their experiences with you?

I really want to go, but I'm wondering what kind of obstacles i may face in doing so.

    thank you!

  • I know several Asian Americans in the program right now.

There are Asian Americans who don't get in but I would guess for the most part that isn't the reason. There may be cases. That depends on who interviews you.

  • GAHAHAHAHA, NOVA went under, lol....

  • one of my pet peeves is that your videos are all sideways.

Do you think you look better from the side or is it just easier to hold the camera straight out beside you like that?

can you make one just looking at the camera?

  • It is easier to hold the camera that way. Most of the time I am talking to myself and you are just listening.

I will see what I can do about making a straight on video

  • Alternate myself.

I didn't get what I wanted but eventually ended up there due to some mix up.

One of the questions they asked me was, as an ethnic Korean, why do I not just go to Korea?

My answer was that I wanted to go to Japan to represent the US but from a different angle. Aparently that's the wrong answer, and non-whites are actually accepted according to a quota according to one interview I heard.

In the interview I had a military attache asking me about my beliefs on KJ relations too

  • Ok, I have a question... How did you deal with the interviewers acting like bad students? Or how SHOULD you deal with that?

  • OMG! D: Why do I feel a little doubt now?? Ok I have some questions now...

What did you do when they were talking over you when the roleplay was going on?

Did you know ANY japanese at the time?

I'm glad you said there are other ways of getting into Japan.... But still! JET is my ultimate goal <3

  • Overseas they have been fairly quiet about what happened. They will still get people

  • NOVA still exists, it is just called G-communications. The multimedia center has been up and running for a while. Most of the shitty middle management is still here and they company is still ineffective as a whole. They are loosing people all the time and will have to recruit again soon. Doesn't mean it is a good option, just a common one.

  • In order to get into the jet program do you have to have a colledge degree first.

  • Yes, a four year degree is required for most teaching positions in Japan

  • does it have to be a degree in education.

  • Nope,

My degree is in Economics and East Asian studies.

  • Nice video, very informative

  • Thanks for the suggestions for the interview. I've been wondering about that most of all. Keep up the videos.

  • thanks for this video! question tho if u don't mind answering...do you have a lot of help learning Japanese? i've always heard that throwing yourself into a country makes it easier to learn its language, but Japanese is....well it's Japanese!!!!!!! i think thats the only respect that intimidates me!

  • Great advice. I had my interview one week before this video was posted, but thanks anyway! Also, I'd agree with everything you said about the JET interviewers' expectations.

  • Thank You for the informative video. =)

  • looks like the jet program either provided you a nice place, or you found it on your own and looked hard for it.

  • This was from after JET, but there are other JETs in the building

  • I have my criticisms of the program but I would recommend it first.

  • hey I'm just curious is there a lot of opportunities (similar to JET but much higher paying) in japan for someone who has their masters in history or will it only help with getting selected?

  • That is a convoluted question. There are other higher paying opportunities mainly teaching at a university but for that you probably need a doctorate. JET pays about the same no mater what you do, CIR, or ALT. A masters in history might help you get an interview with JET or several other programs but the interview will matter much more than your degree.

  • oh and keep up the great videos Whit! I love them!

  • Nova doesn't even exist anymore.

  • Yes and no.

It is G-Communications now. The old company president has gone into hiding from what I heard and they want to sue him for stealing from his company. The new GNova has most of the same staff and most of the middle to upper management is still the same and almost all of the peons were fired and then rehired.

  • You should post a video of what you do in your free time, now that you're no longer jumping off cliffs on the weekend.
