I'd read somewhere years ago that Werner Klemperer and Robert Cleary were, in real life, prisoners of war during WWII. Werner even said that if they ever portrayed Klink as smart he'd walk off the show.
20 years after World War II ended, American were able to laugh at the kooky adventures of prisoners of war in Germany. The Vietnam War ended 38 years ago. When are they going to make a sitcom about the nutty hijinks that occurred in Vietnamese POW camps? Here, I'll give you a catchphrase for the lovable Sgt. Nguyen for free: "Di Di Mau! Di Di Mau!"
A great theme to a great comedy show! It is broadcasted on a station called KDOC at like 2:30AM! If I am up on a weekend, I'll watch it! Thanks for uploading it here!
@MrSteverapposelli Robert Clary is not the only remaining cast member alive, Richard Dawson who plays the part of Corporal Peter Newkirk is also alive.
as of 2010 there are only 2 cast members left. Louie LaBeau and Peter Newkirk First names were as follows Robert E Hogan Peter Newkirk Louie LaBeau Andrew Carter James Kinchloe (Although his first name was mentioned as IVAN in one episode where he was an African Prince) Richard Baker(replaced Kinch in final season) Hans Shultz Wilhelm Klink
Clary was the youngest of 14 children. At the age of twelve, he began a career singing professionally. In 1942, because he was Jewish, he was deported to the Nazi concentration camp, Buchenwald with 12 other members of his immediate family. Clary was the only survivor.
Leon Askin (General Burkhalter) was Jewish & fled the Nazi's in 1930s. He joined the US Army and while serving learned that both his parents had been murdered at While serving in the military he learned that his parents had been killed at Treblinka extermination camp.
@DeltaFoxtrotWhiskey3 Yeah that is crazy ironic, I can't see how anybody could put on a German uniform with the swastika on it after that, but I guess these actors were able to look past that and see that making NAZIs look like fools was the ultimate revenge.
@Caterpillarjon That generation wasn't politically correct, THEY WERE REAL! Reality wasn't meant to offend, it's just REAL.. The swastika was a REAL thing, with REAL people following it.. Do you honestly think that just because you don't see it anymore, that those kind of Facist/socialists don't exist anymore? LOL, the same kind of Authoritarian Megalomaniacs are running the USA right now!

I always loved this show as a kid, great theme tune. But what's with all the cocaine everywhere at the start?

@BackToTheBlues That would be "fake snow" provided by the higher ups at CBS.
