I'd read somewhere years ago that Werner Klemperer and Robert Cleary were, in real life, prisoners of war during WWII. Werner even said that if they ever portrayed Klink as smart he'd walk off the show.

20 years after World War II ended, American were able to laugh at the kooky adventures of prisoners of war in Germany. The Vietnam War ended 38 years ago. When are they going to make a sitcom about the nutty hijinks that occurred in Vietnamese POW camps? Here, I'll give you a catchphrase for the lovable Sgt. Nguyen for free: "Di Di Mau! Di Di Mau!"
