The Band that Scared Nashville indeed. Too bad Nashville didn't get get it, it still needs shaking up. Thank you and thank you to wjnipod for keeping the music alive. Check out my videos of "Is Anybody Here," "Let the Cowboys Ride," and "Tell Him." Keep up the good work.
MKEOGH76- The last thing I wish to do is glamorize substance abuse- I know the cost too well. I have to, however, point out that the Bill you refer to with The Cowsills is not really BILL COWSILL but Bud Cowsill's (we should put him in a cage match in eternity with Murray Wilson- maybe they finish each other) idea (or at least Bill playing along as best he could). Bill was an old- no make that timeless soul anyway. He was justifiably adored in Canada by people who never knew he was a Cowsill...
1rebound: All I was commenting on was the striking difference in appearance between what Billy Cowsill looked like early in his career and when this video was made. It's clear to me it wasn't all a result of the ravages of time. The habits that led to his early demise are indicated all over his face. It's sad.
You're right. Billy never wanted to be the smiling, goofy suit wearing Cowsills' frontman who sang bubbly pop songs with his mom and baby sister, but that wasn't my point.
and that ensemble that was smiling, wearing goofy suits with mom and baby sis (who , by the way, is enjoying critical and commercial success as a bandleader/composer) kicked absolute butt! talk about pigeonholing........the cowsills were and are great musicians and born entertainers,,,,,,,,,and my friends.
God rest Billy and Barry,,,,,,,,,,they;ll hear thunder when your feet hit the ground!!!!
However, you can see the years of hard living written all over Billy Cowsill's face. He looks so different from the handsome 19 year old who fronted his siblings in 1967 on The Ed Sullivan Show and it's clearly not all the result of time. RIP Billy.
It really is a shame that music has to be slotted into categories such that a band like this falls between the cracks. The music industry does not encourage originality or creativity. I'd rather listen to The Blue Shadows than 99.9% of that Nashville drek.
Thanks so much Jed! I saw the Blue Shadows at a tribute to the Everly Brothers at the Morgan Wixson Theatre in LA in, I believe 1993. Billy Swan, The Williams Brothers, Eden and Jason Everly were on the bill. The Shadows blew everyone away. Discovering Billy Cowsill is like finding Del Shannon, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly or George Jones if no one knew their names....the one that got away....Jeff Hatcher is one of the great unsung heroes of rock n roll...yes Jeff...trying DOES count for something
I saw them at the Rusty Gull the week before. The band played a set , then Bill and Jeff came out to say that they were playing an Everly Brothers tribute and asked if it was ok if they 2 played a few Everly tunes. Unbelieveable. They did 4 songs, you could hear a pin drop while they were performing and after the last notes there was a second of silence and then the bar went mental. That night is one of the highlights of 25 years in the music business.
got this cd when i was 9 i lost it when i was 18 26 now and this is the first i heard it since one of my fav tunes thanx for the upload
