What most translated Qurans do is just 'direct translate' it word by word, for example (I'll give you a hardcore one): yuqaatilu in Arabic could mean 'he kills' or 'he fights'. Well yes, you need to learn the scriptures and it's history from its original form (Arabic, in this context). It's not a cop out, it is true for every religion (if you are serious about learning the truth). Let's say, to learn the original scriptures of the Old Testament, you need to learn Hebrew (it's original language) to understand it's true meaning. Not many people knew the word 'Muhamedim' (Muhammad) in the Old Testament was directly translated to another word.
