Your teacher is right, but english is a very informal language compared to other languages there are many ways to say stuff in english.

Objects (nouns) are more commonly referred to as "it" when the gender of an animal/insect/bug is unknown we call it "it", by calling it "she" the man has told us in one word, that that he is talking about the spider and its a female.

If you're referring to what the origin of the word, it is Spanish and means balls or round objects, referring to the shape of it's "disguise".
