im fixing to buy one of these to put on my race lawnmower should i expect around 50 horse power? if not i was going to put a chevy small block 305 id rather have this V4 its so cute i found on in a junk yard running for 120bucks
@Motorchevytoyota some1 cant watch f1 cause he doesnt understand much of this "weird" sport , can u lent me ur car to go to the farm and harvest some corns ??
@Motorchevytoyota hey we could all get truck engines in the normal cars and we all be americans ... unfortunatelly we are no so stupid to do such things , f1 is just to fast for u even to watch , thats why u hate the honda sound and prefer the truck noise ...
That sounds like a V4 should..perfect. On cold start mine dripps water from the tail pipe but that soon goes when the engine comes up to temperature..something i never had with the standard exhaust..just with the Jetex.
Ive always read that these engines are hard to get power out of ,i would love to see a really heavily tuned one, just to see if its possible to get good power ,and if its just a case of people taken the easy route and fitting a v6 :)
@kevrs2 Yes, its hard to get power out of a V4. a normal engine block, with som light modifivatioan (inlet, heads, carbs and exhaust) will give maksimum 90 bhp, if you want more than that, it wil cost you som hard cash.
In the rally versions it was bored to 1784 cm³ and 1933 cm³ giving around 150 hp (110 kW) in the naturally aspirated version and 200 hp (150 kW) DIN at 7000 rpm in the Saab 96 RC Turbo version, doing 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in five seconds. SAAB also tuned the engine to 240 hp.
@Thyrhaug thats fantastic ,240hp ,but iwould love to fit one with cosworth GAA heads ,shortenend , to fit , as ive got ideas ,seeing the 24v inline 6 opel head cut to go on a 2.2 CIH....LOL WOULDNT it be great :)
@slayerman95 It's a V4, originaly a disign from the Ford Cologne V6. Many of the internal parts form the V6 fits the V4 (piston, valvetrain, rods). You can even put a V6 engine in a SAAB 96, but you have to move the radiator further forward.
@Thyrhaug Didn´t know it was from the v6. Heard it was invented from chopping a v8 in two parts and you have two v4´r but can only use one of them because the cylinderwall is too fin on one of them. Also I have one question: is it a engine that has only one camshaft that is in the middle between the connecting rods (unfortunately I don´t know the word for it on my own language) as it is a hemi engine or does it have four as it could have been a v6 or a v8? :D
Good engineering.....but probably the positioning of the rpm dial/charge dials) are in the most useless position. You need them , ideally, in eye glance postion whilst driving. As a pilot myself, I know where I want my instruments to be., and that is in your easy "eye scan" position. Can you actual see these instruments when you are driving? My eyes are in my face, and not in my legs.
@7477238 Its not smooth. The V4 engine sin "not" in balance, Internaly in the engine there is a balace chaft, with conterweigts, to smoothen the vibration
@Thyrhaug Quite right, the problem stemming from the 60 degree angle. A 90 degree V4 could be made to run almost completely smooth using just a 2 throw crank.
Thyrhaug was kind of a dick in his reply but unknowingly is half correct I'm afraid. The 60 degree angle is to blame for the roughness and it runs only as rough as an inline-4 because it basically IS an inline-4 and I will tell you why; a true "V" engine has a common crankpin for opposing cylinders and this engine has a crank with four individual crankpins just like any inline-4. A V8 has 4 throws, a V6 has 3 throws, a true V4 has 2 throws.
Agreed, a 4-throw, 90 degree four cylinder engine would work. You could call it and inline four or a V4 and some nitpick like me will always point out how it is technically wrong. You would just cal it a V4 though, that's what motorcycle guys do.
@zapwatt I think you misunderstood. You could make a 90 V4 with a crankshaft that had all the rods on one crankpin and you could have excellent balance. It would be no more unlikely than many early four cylinder auto engines that had four throws but only two main bearings.
The only way I see that being possible is for the block to have four banks, one bank for each cylinder 90 degrees apart, 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. It wouldn't be any better balanced than an inline-4 however because there would still be 1st order imbalance just like any 4banger. Also, it would not only take up a bunch of space with its odd shape but oiling would prove difficult as there is no simple way for drainback. . . unless you went 'total loss' oiling like the old radials.
@zapwatt No, what you would be dealing with would be two "L" twins, like a Ducati or a Moto Guzzi running side beside. There'd be a bit of imbalance from cylinder stagger, but very little. Large crank counterweights would be required, but nothing insurmountable. Old radials were not total loss, although you might get that impression looking under them when they were parked. Perhaps you meant a rotary?
@7477238 It has even firing impulses though, due to 60* offset crank throws like in the Cologne V6.(its a Ford engine if you didnt know;) The V4 and V6 is very similar, pretty much the same engine in different length versions. The V6 can be installed in a 96, but you have to cut out the girder on which the hood is hinged and weld it in place after the install. I believe that a small number of 96's had the 2 liter V6 originally.

So how smooth does a V4 run in comparison to V6s and I-4 engines? I've never seen one in person.
