Health insurance is the one product where nobody competes for your business when you need it. Once you're sick... BOOM! Instant monopoly! If your insurer treats you bad, you can't go anywhere else, you're completely at their mercy. If your insurer is the government, you're at their mercy, but there's no profit motive as an incentive to fuck you. Can the profit motive be a good thing without being a good thing in all times and places? Is life more complicated than absolutist ideology?

This is so easy: you have 1,300 insurance companies in the US. Allow all of them to compete for everyone's business just like all companies can compete for your auto insurance business. The competition drives down costs, provides better coverage, and exposes those companies who have bad practices. It's a no-brainer. Best of all, the government itself need not get in the insurance business as some Dems want to do.
