Even dodgy Dario is infinitely better than the run of the mill, 15 minutes per thrill that we've been forced to endure of late. For me the big five has to include Deep Red, Inferno, Tenebre, Opera and Sleepless. Thanks Maestro!
Dude, I would go as far as to say that 'Stendhal Sydrome' is his 'OTHER' masterpiece. 'Suspiria' of course being his first :-) Great top 5 though and I agree with 'Opera', it gets a bad rap but it's one of his most violent and best all round films.
i love watching your videos, you sound like a real horror movie lover.i myself have been addicted to horror movies since i was little.suspiria is my fave dario movie ecspecially the music.i found the 3 disc version that includes the soundtrack do you have that one? oh by the way your cute.
Nice, your top 5 matches mine too...hehehe. I really must get around to seeing the rest of Argento's work, I'm most familiar with his 70's and early 80's stuff.
Hey mate. It's the Australian version by Umbrella. I like the cover art better too. It's actually a better release than the Blue Underground one, because it not only has the 25 anniversary featurette, but also a hour long doco called Dario Argento: An Eye For Horror, plus a bonus interview with Argento. You'd have to import it to the states to get it however. Cheers.
5 Best Argento Films: Bird with the Crystal Plumage, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, Deep Red, Suspiria, Phenomena. I haven't seen Tenebre and I couldn't stand Opera. Between Goblin and Ennio Morricone, Argento's pictures have had some of the best soundtracks of all time too. Unexpected Violence by Morricone is amazing.
Stendhal Syndrome is a great one as well. I've seen other people have mentioned it. A little long and the second half gets a bit out there but it's a disturbing film with some cool visuals.
Thank you. I was actually quite surprised by the feedback I got for that film - people seemed to like it a lot more than I anticipated. Being one of his more recent works, I though it might have been sh*t on, but hey, seems to be respected :D. I will have to buy it some time.
wow you perfectly described susperia the whole setting and the colors omg thats what makes the movie if it wasnt for the setting and the colors the movie would be nothing
Thanks very much. I think that aspect of the film is definitely the reason it's so memorable. Hmm, that's an interesting idea that if the movie was tripped of that it would be nothing. I don't think it would be personally. The story and direction were strong enough, and the music is so well done.
i know it really is one of the most unique of any horror movie ive ever seen because if you go watch a horror movie now a days if a lady walks into a bathroom there isnt going to be like a neon green light shining through the window, and the whole design of the school is bizzare, every detail of it, even the shape of the glass in the door is bizzare, and the music, goblin itself is a good band they are just so amazing!!
Yeah, I've heard about the remake. I think Argento is going to write but not direct. I heard a rumour Christina Ricci was being considered for the main character.
Keep um coming. I have Argento's THE CHURCH original LP on ebay uk up for bids at the moment and WORLD OF HORROR, an Argento doc. Ebay seller top.vision.
Over here in Australia, most of our Argento DVDs come with World of Horror on the disc. Pretty cool stuff. Soavi's The Church was pretty well done. Great music. Thanks for the info. ;)
hey great list, I think my top 5 would be in order: Deep Red, Tenebre, Bird with the Crystal Plummage, Suspiria, Opera. Hes let me down with his recent films, I think Opera was his last really great one. Something like Eyes of Crystal I would've hoped he would of been capable of making. Check out Door into Darkness series if you can find it, it's decent.
Cheers buddy. I think your right about Opera, but I did really enjoy Two Evil Eyes, and Trauma wasn't so bad. I remember you telling me about Eyes of Crystal - I asked at some local stores but no release here. Door into Darkness sounds okay, maybe not my thing though. I'm sure I'll eventually buy it when I'm in a completist mood. Thanks for the comment.
Cheers man. Still haven't seen that film. It sounds pretty fun though. I read its kind of satirical. lol, The Skyhooks song seemed perfect fro what videos I wanted to make. Plus, I just really like the song :)
I'm italian and Dario Argento is my favourite director. I think, just like you do, that suspiria is his best movie, but at the same time I think that Inferno is at the same level! I wish you can see The Stendhal Syndrome, I'm sure you'll like it because is a supernatural giallo rich of memorable scenes and stange psychological aspects... Great video!
Hey! I've never seen an Argento movie (sad, I know). What movie would you suggest I start out with? I always hear about Suspiria. Should I start there? Being a horror fan I really should check out Argento.
Hmmm, thats a hard question. I'd say Suspiria, but to be honest, the film doesn't represent his career the best. Something like Tenebre or Deep Red may give you a better idea of what Argento is about. Thanks for the comment man.
I'm making my way through his earlier work now, Crystal Plumage shall be next on the list. I enjoyed The Stendhal Syndrome just saw it last week...baring in mind its a thriller so its slightly different to what I am used to...but its massively sadistic (and thats a good thing)
He did a non-genre film too btw (it's a comedy), I think you did not mention. It's called 'The Fice Days of Milan', he did it after 4 Flies. The only DVDs available of it are here in Germany and in Italy.
I am thinking about buying the new US-DVD of Four Flies, but it's pretty expensive. Will you get it? It's the only Argento film still missing in my collection.
Great list man, exactly the same as me! :D Great minds think alike. I've heard of Five Days in Milan, but decided not to mention non-horror efforts. Phantom is certainly the stinker - gah. Yeah, I've bought the Four Flies DVD. I'll have to show it n an upcoming update. Apparently the print is very good, but there are a few cuts (not for violence or anything like that) due to print damage.
Thanks man. But, don't you find the prices cheaper on Deep Discount? Shipping is fairly cheap. I ordered 7 movies the other day and shipping was only $12.99.
Well, once you factor in the exchange rate, most of the DVDS are about the price you get them at JB or something. If I were you, I'd buy most of the Argento movies you can here if they are a good price. One Item you might like is the Dario Argento Collection - it comes with five films :D
Thanks mate. You're a star. I'll check it out this week. Yeah, the exchange rate isn't too bad, but I will check out JB first. The movies that I bought from Deep Discount are all impossible to find in Aus or way too expensive here. Freddy vs Jason was $8 on DD, $30 odd at JB.
I picked up The Evil Dead and Jason goes to hell today. I own the Evil dead, but this is the speciel ed.
Nice one buddy.... Great review. As you know I've been watching these film over the last week, so I found you review very interesting and spot on... Great as always...
Tenebre was a perfect film for this genre I think. This was the favourite of the thriller/stalker giallos. great twists and some classic scenes.. Phenomena and Susperia are just fantastic in their own ways.. Again some really classic scenes and great music score.. Opera was enjoyable... Love the needles by the eye.. Trauma was great, but not as good as Tenebre... Card player and Hitchcock are worth watching if you are a fan.. Really enjoyed all of them though...
Thanks for posting that man - it was really interesting to hear your thoughts. I agree, the most impressive thing about Tenebre is just how well-done and solid the film is.
Great pick. Phenomena only just missed out being on the list. I really like the story in that one, and it has a great cast. Plus, that monkey was cepy as hell lol
Hey man. Sorry I've been really busy. I had my anniversary and been busy through Easter. I'll try and geton tonight, but it will probably be late - like 12:00 - 1:00 AM - that cool? We can play some COD4
Ok, awesome. If you're on, i'm mitchypoorox. Just watch my South Park dvd's or do Veteran on COD4 util you come on. What time would say to get off my 360 if your not on?
out of the few ive seen, my top two picks are tenebre and suspiria and i love them for completely different reasons. like u said one is giallo and the other witchcraft, also i love the contrast in style, suspira has a very traditional setting and characters while tenebre's characters and settings are very modern, white and refreshing.
Great descriptions man, very spot on. That's what I find so great about Suspiria - the contrast in style and story is very different to his other work. Tenebre is just a very well done film.
lol, that monkey comment made me laugh. Your right though - as a sequel to Suspiria and Inferno, the film should have been a lot better. It had no climatic feel to it either which was disapointing.
Cheers man. I'd recommend a pick-up if it's cheap, especially if you want to get into Argento. If truth be told, it's not one of my personal favourites, but it's still a good film.

great subject mate,my top 5 would be1-PHENOMENA,2-DEEP RED,3-SUSPIRIA,4-SLEEPLESS,5-MOTHER OF TEARS.i really liked OPERA and THE CARD PLAYER alot as well.
Good picks man. Phenomena only just missed out being on the list. I think it's one of his most overlooked films. I really enjoyed it, and it had an interesting concept in the film.
I actually bought that in store. It's the Australian version from Umbrella. Exactly the same as the Blue Underground release, except we get a Dario Argento doco on the disc too.
well ive only seen suspiria tenebre inferno opera phenomena and 1/2 of deep red. to be honest i didnt like phenomena very much but i love the rest! the eye needles in opera where terrifying! i'll definitely check out the others u mentioned and whatever other ones i can. btw i have a copy of zombi, the european version of dawn of the dead that dario argento re edited. i didnt like it very much though he really watered it down. but i dont think that has anything to do w/ his talent as a director..
Cheers mate. I was trying to think of some title that would fit Argento, and black gloves seemed the obvious choice. Yeah, Umbrella Ent does some really nice covers.
Yeah, Region 4 cover released by Umbrella. The usually have great images on their DVDs. I prefer all their Argento releases to the US counterparts personally.
Where did you go Jarashut? Your video's were great mate.

I personally think Opera is his best as well. Suspiria, while great isn't my favorite and its ALWAYS everyones top choice.
My list:
Opera
Deep Red
Inferno (shocking, I know but it sucks me in more so then Suspiria)
Suspiria
Phenomena
Tenebrae

Perfect Top 5 list. Here's mine:
5. Bird with the Crystal Plumage
4. Tenebre
3. Opera
2. Profondo Rosso
1. Suspiria
His biggest stinkers IMO is Phantom of the Opera (although there are some nice gore effects in it).

And love the Black Gloves reference.

Cheers mate. I was trying to think of some title that would fit Argento, and black gloves seemed the obvious choice. Yeah, Umbrella Ent does some really nice covers.

I like that Deep Red cover. I assume that it's Region 4.

Yeah, Region 4 cover released by Umbrella. The usually have great images on their DVDs. I prefer all their Argento releases to the US counterparts personally.
