Keep in mind certain things when observing the game back then: no three point line which means less floor spacing, dribbling was different and many techniques today would be called for carrying, zone defense was illegal, and players played in flat sneakers on cold hardwood. Given all that, to see Pete move and shoot how he did here is amazing. Not to take away from the NBA greats we have now but it makes me think how incredibly spoiled players are today compared to the past.
THANK YOU for posting this......Hoping Fredette can follow ...well see Pistol Pete was Amazing... Imagine if three pointers were in play...He could have scored 100. Walt Frazier was a great defender....had No chance against Maravich. No one did.
MICHAEL JORDAN PLAYS AGAINS THE HARDERS DEFENCE ON NBA OF THE 80S AND 90S HISTORY AND STILL AVERAGE 30.1 PPG PISTOL WAS GOOD IN COLLEGE BUT IN NBA I DONT THING SO
@foreversoulful Yeah man, that referee was trying to prove something; Pete made a good move and was fouled on the play, and the idiot calls the foul on Pete!
@jlawarren Yeah while performing that leaner. You can either take it as a sly way of throwing off his shot, or that he just likes the way it feels. Who doesn't pat each other on the glutes in the NBA? There have been many occurrances by the greats also... MJ.
@jlawarren I know that ass slapping thing is weird but believe it or not it was kind of a common thing to do in those days. In Football, Basketball, and Baseball....they all used to do it. It wasn't meant in any kind of sexual way.....it's just something players used to do. Don't ask me why.....looking back now I think it's crazy too.
@nazbuk I loved Pete, he was an extremely special player to watch, but I want to be careful not to over state things by saying Kareem and Wilt, but I understand your emotion about the great Pistol......LOL.
@ShangoDC as a player I would take Pete over Kareem or Wilt. He was great simply because he was so talented. Not because he was taller than everyone else...like Wilt and Kareem. Wilt and Kareem possessed talent too of course...no question, but a lot of their success was also based on their height.. Pete's talents were circus-like. The best ball-handler in the history of the game
@williwo I want to be very careful in speaking about the Pistol, because I was from that 70’s era as junior and high school player, before moving on to college. He was very special without doubt, and a ball handling wizard/scorer. It’s hard to compare a dominant center and dominant guard, because they’re doing different things, but in sum total I think if we were putting together a team, we would have select a Kareem over Pete for numerous reasons. Pete is very great though..
You said dude, my Dad took me to see him play against USC in college. Maravich vs. anybody, no way, Walt Frazier, best defensive player in the NBA said nobody can stop him. How about bringing back the 1 on 1 halftime, or horse. Maravich vs. Lebron. Tell me who are you taking?
@sabbathgodsofmetal Pete was awesome by any standards, but defensively he was not as strong in comparison to a Kobe, but different eras. Pete is surely in the top five all-time greatest showman to ever had played the game.
When I was eleven, I attended Pete Maravich's basketball camp for a week. Pete put on some amazing displays for us. From mid court he hit 9 of 10. Then, he hit 7 of 10 from his knees at mid court. Then 7 of 10 from mid court bouncing the ball into the hoop. Then he got a ball and had five high school players try to take it from him. Granted, they were high school players, but FIVE of them? Nope. Pete kept the ball for 2-3 minutes until he finally put up a shot (that he made of course).
In his college days if you adjusted for the modern college 3 point line he would have averaged 57 points a game over his 3 year career. That is insane.
The 2nd greatest ever. The reason him and MJ were so great? The huge hands to just palm the ball. That's something kobe will never physically be able to do.
when you're talking about the greatest ever, every little detail is important to seperate the greats from the greatest. Huge hands, skills, intensity, size, intelligence, all come in to play.
I seriously think Pete Maravich would have had a few seasons where he averaged 40 points a game in the NBA if they had the 3 point line then. He averaged 44 points a game at LSU in 3 years! Imagine that little dinky college 3 point line then??? His college numbers would have been even more unreal.
@aitraining : Actually, former head coach Dale Brown did go through all the information he could find and added in the 3-point line (as if it was there). "Years later LSU head coach Dale Brown reviewed game tapes and ascertained that had a three point line been in place when Pistol Pete played Pete would have averaged an astounding 13 three pointers per game which would have boosted his average points per game from an astounding 44 per game to an unbelievable 57 points per game." SICK!!!
OMG! Awesome post!!! I remember watching this game. Knick fan here but LOVED Pete Maravich. This was amazing! and GREAT job on the editing and the post. Just WOW!
@tps70124 : You are right....2 BS 'charging' calls, but at least 70 pts total for sure. He scored on the 1st bad call at 3:35. I remember watching it on TV back then. Truly in the ZONE!

@taxidriver2929 if only he didn't have to foul out. yes he could of scored lots more. now chamberlain 100, kobe 81, i think d. robinson 77, m. jordan 69, then pete 68. someone will beat chamberlain someday. it's going to be hard but someone will.
@MurderMilitiaChannel You gotta be kidding. Maravich was coming hard of screens with the smallest bit of daylight the whole game. There's nothing you can do about that. He was running out at odd angles and pulling up going away from the basket. How do you defend that? That was just Pete's day.
who had a bettter number if mj take 44 shot, who know how many points he got.
if pete is not foul out, who know how many points can he score and there still a 1 minute left. wilt 63 shot that alot to get 100 pt, kobe 81 pt with his 7 three pt.
@THETOYOTAable Pete (Knicks) and MJ played against competive teams. Kobe's big game against Toronto came against a team that didn't win 20 games all yr. No comparison
The two offensive fouls calls were ridiculous. He should have been over 70 easily. In today's NBA they would be giving him calls, not fouling him out of the game with stupid calls like this.
I disagree with every one of you. For one, you dont have to campare NBA players like Kobe and Pete. You dont have to make one look bad for the other to look good. For two Pete is better than Kobe but that doesn't make Kobe any worse. Do you get where i'm going here?
Wait...Who is comparing Kobe Bryant to Pete Maravich? That's a joke. The NBA isn't even basketball anymore. It's a product. It's entertainment. There is NO defense in the NBA anymore. Unfortunately, Pistol helped make it that way. Just look at their college careers too. Oh wait...
Certainly, a one game comparison is interesting...and limited. That said, it is my opinion that if judged by talent alone, Pete would rank very high among his peers. If judged by his impact on his teams successes, his rank crashes in my opinion. Did he play on lousy teams?...most definately! Would Bird, Magic or a whole host of other NBA greats have made those same teams (much) better? I believe so. (Btw...he got away with one offensive foul but had two bad calls go against him in the vid.)
Pete's "68" line 26/43 16/19 6reb 6asst 2blk 3stl vs Kobe's "81"..28/46(7/13 3's) 18/20 6reb 2asst 1blk 3stl. If we adjust downward for Kobe's 3's and consider assists, Pete accounted for 80 points, Kobe 78.
Then I guess we should adjust for the fact that zone defenses were illegal and double/triple teams were scarce during Pete's era. Not to mention that there were MUCH more possessions during Pete's era (about 10-15 more at least). If we simply just adjust for possessions, Bryant beats him quite easily.
Why would you adjust downward for three-pointers? Makes no sense. Kobe played in his era and Pete played in his era. Nothing more or less you could do about it. Just admire the great play.
(1) I admire the great play of both players. (2) I said a one game comparison is limited but that was all I was comparing.
(3) I simply adjusted downward for 3's because factually they did not exist in Pete's day. (It was easier to adjust on Kobe's side; conceding that Pete would have faired similarly that day.)
All that said...in my opinion there is no comparison between Kobe and Pete but since people like to compare, I gave it a shot for one game only. Kobe is in the discussion of greatest all-time (not sure where I put him exactly but certainly high on my list). As for Pete, I would not go as far as to place him in the top 50 all-time over the likes of McAdoo, Dominique or even my fave Gail Goodrich. This is not to say I don't appreciate Pete's uniqueness and talent in its (proper) perspective.
lol, your really gonna put dominique wilkins over pistol? why, cuz he jumped higher? get real buddy. wilkins would be privledged to wash pistols floppy socks
@nonplayerzealot4 Like I said above...it was just a one game comparison. No one is attempting to re-write history. Another poster has included the stat line of MJ's 70 and Wilts 100...I take no offense to that as it is simply a comparision of one single game. Certainly they are all great performances.
@nonplayerzealot4 "Like I said above" refers to the comments that were made a year ago...I just realized people are key-ing into the comment that was 'Liked" rather than the entire discussion.
@nonplayerzealot4 The Knicks had 3 great HOFers in McAdoo, Monroe and Frazier (Bradley is a joke). Does anyone remember who was on the Toronto Raptors when Kobe hit 81?? All I know is they won less than 20 games.
@80sweregr8 when kobe scores over 50 see how many assts he has like negitive 3 when pete does its around 7 or 12 he wasthat good. no one in the 70s was better than him
@StJtproducers You are turning me into a Kobe defender and although I like Kobe I did not see this happening. Pete averaged 5.4 assists per game his career...Kobe 4.7 assists. Pete shot 44.1%; Kobe 45.5%. Kobe averages more rebounds, steals, block shots and less turnovers per game. Kobe has a better free throw average 84% vs 82% and 5 rings to boot! 68 points on this night was great but the man played other games too. If you had said no one was flashier in the 70's that would be accurate.
@80sweregr8 Pete Maravich shot alot more long ranged shots than Kobe and he was not on arguably lousy teams he was on gawd awful teams he was quadruple teamed most of the time while Kobe had a teammate who would draw those. It's hard to compare stats from that era to now for either argument too much too. If the Pistol had a team he probably would have averaged like 24-26 ppg and like 9-10 assists around 46% with like I would say probably over 40% from the 3 or close.
@taxidriver2929 I've posted a lot on this vid and have tried my hardest to be respectful of Pete's accomplishments while making comparison to others such as Kobe. That said, there was no 3 point line back in Pete's day and therefore not much motivation to shoot from a true 3-point distance more than necessary. Even in watching this prolific 68 point performance it is hard to say he shot beyond the current NBA 3-point line. You only have to watch the vid to see where most point are derived.
@taxidriver2929 I doubt he attempted as many 3-point distance shots as the most prolific 3-point shooters since the advent of the 3-point line. I saw Pete Maravich play...he was never quadruple covered...thats just silly. Had he been on better teams who knows what he would have averaged. Certainly he was comfortable dominating the ball in college and at the professional level. I'm not sure what he would have done on a team with a dominant point guard. All this said, he was fun to watch.
@StJtproducers Don't get me wrong...I liked Pete as he was fun to watch play. It is just so hard to rate him properly since it is a team game after all and he was arguably on lousy teams with the exception of Boston at the end of his career. He only shot 15 3-pointers but made 10. That is not enough shots to rate him on 3's but 66.7% is off the charts. Wish we knew the number of games he shot his team out of a game or for that matter shot his team back into a game. How many game winners?
@80sweregr8 I applaud you for coming clean about your highly popular little "revisionist history" post from last year. As usual, people prefer fantasy over reality It's just indicative of Youtube and the internet in general that posts with "what-ifs" and made-up facts are more popular than posts that stick to the honest truth
@emmettk I came clean one year ago...go look at the old posts!! That said, Pistol's 68 is still one of the single greatest performances in NBA history as was Kobe's 81 (and some of the other performances noted in other posts).
Fallacious statement, imo. There have been only 3 instances of players scoring more than 68 in the last 20 NBA seasons, one of them was Robinson who needed to be force-fed the ball against the weak Clippers. Plenty of poor defensive teams have come and gone since then.
68 is a very difficult thing to do even against poor defense.
I was at this game... quite an experience. I was sitting underneath the visitors basket. Pete had me shaking my head. I didn't know he had so many points though, till I saw the stat sheet.
He got robbed on those two offensive foul calls. Without those you can add 6, plus a couple more in the last 1:18 makes 78, then throw in a 3pt line and we're talking 85 plus.
Good point biltron.... the three point line would have no doubt gave him MANY more points, because Pete would have been LOOKING to take threes.
Also.... the most amazing thing about Maravich was the fancy passing. I've NEVER seen anyone to this day do what he was able to do in regards to showmanship in the NBA.
damn, what if he had a 3 point line. also, he must be out of this world, doing all of the things that he did without a left coronary artery in the heart. sad that caused him to die. one of the most underrated icons in nba history
agreed. if he the players around him that michael jordan did then pistol would be the greatest. but he was always by himself trying to win... the true # 23
Not to take away from the NBA greats we have now but it makes me think how incredibly spoiled players are today compared to the past.

d1ants20 1 year ago
Wait...Who is comparing Kobe Bryant to Pete Maravich? That's a joke. The NBA isn't even basketball anymore. It's a product. It's entertainment. There is NO defense in the NBA anymore. Unfortunately, Pistol helped make it that way. Just look at their college careers too. Oh wait...
blotchy67 2 years ago
The two offensive foul calls were horrible. He should have been over 70.

AMAZING!
berpha 2 years ago
Certainly, a one game comparison is interesting...and limited. That said, it is my opinion that if judged by talent alone, Pete would rank very high among his peers. If judged by his impact on his teams successes, his rank crashes in my opinion. Did he play on lousy teams?...most definately! Would Bird, Magic or a whole host of other NBA greats have made those same teams (much) better? I believe so. (Btw...he got away with one offensive foul but had two bad calls go against him in the vid.)
80sweregr8 2 years ago
Pete's "68" line 26/43 16/19 6reb 6asst 2blk 3stl vs Kobe's "81"..28/46(7/13 3's) 18/20 6reb 2asst 1blk 3stl. If we adjust downward for Kobe's 3's and consider assists, Pete accounted for 80 points, Kobe 78.
80sweregr8 2 years ago 27
Then I guess we should adjust for the fact that zone defenses were illegal and double/triple teams were scarce during Pete's era. Not to mention that there were MUCH more possessions during Pete's era (about 10-15 more at least). If we simply just adjust for possessions, Bryant beats him quite easily.
Why would you adjust downward for three-pointers? Makes no sense. Kobe played in his era and Pete played in his era. Nothing more or less you could do about it. Just admire the great play.
armin12nba 2 years ago
(1) I admire the great play of both players. (2) I said a one game comparison is limited but that was all I was comparing.
(3) I simply adjusted downward for 3's because factually they did not exist in Pete's day. (It was easier to adjust on Kobe's side; conceding that Pete would have faired similarly that day.)
80sweregr8 2 years ago
All that said...in my opinion there is no comparison between Kobe and Pete but since people like to compare, I gave it a shot for one game only. Kobe is in the discussion of greatest all-time (not sure where I put him exactly but certainly high on my list). As for Pete, I would not go as far as to place him in the top 50 all-time over the likes of McAdoo, Dominique or even my fave Gail Goodrich. This is not to say I don't appreciate Pete's uniqueness and talent in its (proper) perspective.

@80sweregr8 great comment. many people dont realize how good he really was. he would dominate anybody playing right now.

@80sweregr8 You mean, if we make a bunch of changes to history, Kobe scores 78 and Pistol 80. Lol. That's pretty weak, 80sweregr8.
nonplayerzealot4 10 months ago
@nonplayerzealot4 Like I said above...it was just a one game comparison. No one is attempting to re-write history. Another poster has included the stat line of MJ's 70 and Wilts 100...I take no offense to that as it is simply a comparision of one single game. Certainly they are all great performances.
80sweregr8 10 months ago
@nonplayerzealot4 "Like I said above" refers to the comments that were made a year ago...I just realized people are key-ing into the comment that was 'Liked" rather than the entire discussion.
80sweregr8 10 months ago
@nonplayerzealot4 The Knicks had 3 great HOFers in McAdoo, Monroe and Frazier (Bradley is a joke). Does anyone remember who was on the Toronto Raptors when Kobe hit 81?? All I know is they won less than 20 games.
Amick44 1 week ago
@80sweregr8 Did you account for if Kobe got fouled on a 3 point shot and got to take 3 foul shots? I don't know if that happened.
salamandarsalsa 10 months ago
@salamandarsalsa I did not...I just provided the reported stat line.
80sweregr8 10 months ago
@80sweregr8 when kobe scores over 50 see how many assts he has like negitive 3 when pete does its around 7 or 12 he wasthat good. no one in the 70s was better than him
StJtproducers 10 months ago
@StJtproducers You are turning me into a Kobe defender and although I like Kobe I did not see this happening. Pete averaged 5.4 assists per game his career...Kobe 4.7 assists. Pete shot 44.1%; Kobe 45.5%. Kobe averages more rebounds, steals, block shots and less turnovers per game. Kobe has a better free throw average 84% vs 82% and 5 rings to boot! 68 points on this night was great but the man played other games too. If you had said no one was flashier in the 70's that would be accurate.
80sweregr8 10 months ago
@80sweregr8 Pete Maravich shot alot more long ranged shots than Kobe and he was not on arguably lousy teams he was on gawd awful teams he was quadruple teamed most of the time while Kobe had a teammate who would draw those. It's hard to compare stats from that era to now for either argument too much too. If the Pistol had a team he probably would have averaged like 24-26 ppg and like 9-10 assists around 46% with like I would say probably over 40% from the 3 or close.
taxidriver2929 7 months ago
@taxidriver2929 I've posted a lot on this vid and have tried my hardest to be respectful of Pete's accomplishments while making comparison to others such as Kobe. That said, there was no 3 point line back in Pete's day and therefore not much motivation to shoot from a true 3-point distance more than necessary. Even in watching this prolific 68 point performance it is hard to say he shot beyond the current NBA 3-point line. You only have to watch the vid to see where most point are derived.
80sweregr8 7 months ago
@taxidriver2929 I doubt he attempted as many 3-point distance shots as the most prolific 3-point shooters since the advent of the 3-point line. I saw Pete Maravich play...he was never quadruple covered...thats just silly. Had he been on better teams who knows what he would have averaged. Certainly he was comfortable dominating the ball in college and at the professional level. I'm not sure what he would have done on a team with a dominant point guard. All this said, he was fun to watch.
80sweregr8 7 months ago
@StJtproducers Don't get me wrong...I liked Pete as he was fun to watch play. It is just so hard to rate him properly since it is a team game after all and he was arguably on lousy teams with the exception of Boston at the end of his career. He only shot 15 3-pointers but made 10. That is not enough shots to rate him on 3's but 66.7% is off the charts. Wish we knew the number of games he shot his team out of a game or for that matter shot his team back into a game. How many game winners?
80sweregr8 10 months ago
@80sweregr8 I applaud you for coming clean about your highly popular little "revisionist history" post from last year. As usual, people prefer fantasy over reality It's just indicative of Youtube and the internet in general that posts with "what-ifs" and made-up facts are more popular than posts that stick to the honest truth
emmettk 10 months ago
@emmettk I came clean one year ago...go look at the old posts!! That said, Pistol's 68 is still one of the single greatest performances in NBA history as was Kobe's 81 (and some of the other performances noted in other posts).

Gosh what a terrible call for his last foul... that guy was totally moving. Should have had 70.

If the league at that time had the three, he might of scored over 80-90.

If the league at that time had something called defense, he might have scored over 30-40.
hoophead00 2 years ago
Fallacious statement, imo. There have been only 3 instances of players scoring more than 68 in the last 20 NBA seasons, one of them was Robinson who needed to be force-fed the ball against the weak Clippers. Plenty of poor defensive teams have come and gone since then.
68 is a very difficult thing to do even against poor defense.
nonplayerzealot4 2 years ago
Not really. Not one of his shots were behind the NBA three point line in this video and only 1 is debatable.

goodfellabeats 2 years ago 2
He got robbed on those two offensive foul calls. Without those you can add 6, plus a couple more in the last 1:18 makes 78, then throw in a 3pt line and we're talking 85 plus.
biltron 2 years ago 4
Good point biltron.... the three point line would have no doubt gave him MANY more points, because Pete would have been LOOKING to take threes.
Also.... the most amazing thing about Maravich was the fancy passing. I've NEVER seen anyone to this day do what he was able to do in regards to showmanship in the NBA.

don't you know, at almost the end of his career, the 3pt line was finally out and in the first game he played he went 10 for 15 from the 3pt line..

Yeah, I was referring to THIS particular game. It's a shame they did'nt institute the line sooner.

yeah, don't you think the court was almost missing something in the past without the 3 pt line?
FrostJeremin 2 years ago
Yes.... and if they would have had it during Pete's entire career, he would have averaged MUCH higher ppg.
