In order for a hunk of any rocket to explode it first would have to carry some ammount of fule, when a rocket stage is detached it is devoid of fules and mearly a hunk of metal so what ever it was , it couldnt have been a piece of a rocket.

it was not a rocket. It was a meteor. The sound u heard was a sonic boom which happens when an object passes the speed of sound. and if it was a rocket the parts that broke off would have burned up on re-entry.

Does anyone remember hearing the sound barrier broken before they stopped doing it? I do. A sonic boom rattles houses, people. I think the military boys occasionally break it and just don't tell. There are archived eyewitness newspaper accounts of what happened that night. It is conceivable that a Nuclear tipped rocket (Pakistani origin) was launched from a cargo ship off of NJ. Eye witness accounts are consistent with this missile being intercepted by several SAMs. There is much circumstantial evidence to support this theory.

actually the space debris , are piles of metalic junk mostly titanium and steel , which burn and melt easily way before hiting the ground . this is why they never concern about the fuel capsules used in staged rocket launches. It had to be a bolide. Average man made space debris moves at 5 miles a second and lasts longer as it moves across the sky. This moved much faster. When the rockets disengage from their boosters, its not necessarily in an area that it'll just fall over the ocean. It probably went up and disengaged in space.. and it fell. Researchers/Scientists can't predict where space junk will fall and there is a LOT of it out there.
