This veena is called Gayatri veena. Its named so, after its resemblance with the gayatri mantra. Gayatri mantra has 24 syllables and so does the Gayatri veena. There are a lot more resemblances though: the veena has 24 frets (same as the Saraswati veena), there are 24 individual pieces in the human spinal chord which relate to the flow of energy.
Thus, the Gayatri veena has:::: 4 main strings (sarani, panchami, mandAra and anumandAra), 17 Sympathetic strings and 3 tala strings; thus making a total of 17 + 4 + 3 = 24 strings.... This is the actual basis for the making of the Gayatri veena.
did that have sympathetic strings on it?? I heard him play a series of strings in the middle that sounded as if they were sympathetic strings on the veena, I may be mistaken though
@GatoradeIsNotJuice my son was playing it on the computer but after coming back and relistening for a moment, there are surely sympathetic strings on that veena! I didnt know such a thing existed
@GatoradeIsNotJuice There are 17 sypathetic strings neatly arranged below the fretboard. The invention is from RKS father asthana vidwan Vainika Praveena RS Keshavamurthy. In fact his other children also play similar instruments. The royalty in Mysore encouraged hindustani musicians beside carnatic which was native & western bands. This combination could have led to the invention. And further if you observe, the style has a smooth blend of north & south. Veena Seshanna thillanas illustrate this.
Yeah this is just great on of the songs that first got me into indian/hindu music! Much appreciated, I've been listening to this for years now. Still induces the same feeling as when I first heard it.
May I request the concerned who posted this video or Youtube to post with the address where from I can collect the best of his recordings and preserve that as a token of memory?
Quite amazing , innovative ,with a style of his own, absolutely heart rending, which is more important for playing Veena-All these together point him to a Geniusw par excellance, who is no more,Alas weare.!!
After listening to this again, I notice that he uses some interesting phrases similar to what I have heard from the Shennai wizard Bismallah khan. Interesting stuff.
was that hindolam?
