  • I did it, I did it! I knew to come straight to you to learn this stitch! Watched it twice and I have it down! Thanks Judy!!

  • Thank you! this was really helpful as my written instructions were a bit useless, thanks again

  • you are a really good teacher! brilliant! but can you teach me the stockenitte stich and garter stich and rassberry stich!!!

  • Judy, i think I'm gonna need some help. I've only been knitting about 2 months and made a big mess of trying the purl stitch. Lord only knows how, but I wound up with the wool I was using to wrap round the needle, at the handle end of the row when I purled the last stitch, so I wound up with a strip of wool along the top of the row I'd just finished. Any ideas? Great video, btw :)

  • Such lovely videos. So easy to follow, see and understand. Very glad i found your videos =]

  • Thank you so much.

  • Hey judy, i wanted to make a purl stitch scarf and was wondering if i needed to slip the first stitch and knit the last stitch in a different way. If i do need to knit the last stitch in a different way how do i do it? Is it the same as the one in the garter stitch scarf? Thanks!!! Love your videos!

  • @pelgu

I answered this on my facebook page. did you see it? if you need more help let me know.

  • thank you a million thanks

  • @lonnerridder

thank you for watching. keep knitting and purling and all the rest. please like me on my facebook page.

  • I'm only 15 and I'm trying to knit a hat. I'm only a beginner and every time I saw the word purl I was super confused. All the other videos I watched but this one was great. Thanks a lot!!

  • can u give me the cronology of knitting..1st cast on, 2nd stitch..then?

  • @2424pie

cast on, knit, purl, stockinette stitch, garter stitch, bind off......watch all my videos to learn more. happy knitting!

  • Brilliant. You are a very good teacher!

  • @pqarrow1

glad my video helped you. hope you're having fun knitting. please keep watching and look for me on facebook.

  • Out of all the purl videos i have seen yours was the must helpful

thanks so much. please keep watching and learning and having fun knitting. look for me on facebook.

  • i just made my first successful scarf because of you! thanks a million now i wanna make a hat! do you have any plans on making videos for that?! i need to start making people christmas presents loll

  • Thank you, Judy, you're teaching me how to knit! One slight problem though: after casting on and doing one knit-row, I start the purl and I always end up with one stitch more then the foundation row (I'm sorry if I didn't get the terminology right, I'm a crocheter and know absolutely nothing about knitting) or the previous knit-row. The problem seems to be in the first purl stitch I'm making, it always creates two loops on my right needle! Any tips? Thank you!

  • @CharleneVdB

have you figured it out yet? It sounds like you're putting the yarn in the wrong place at the beginning. Watch the video again and make sure you do what I do. Please keep watching and have fun knitting. Like me on facebook too.

  • @knittingtipsbyjudy I have the same problem with my purl stitches. I've tried a few different videos and I'm sure I'm doing exactly the same thing as you, but it always makes two loops.

  • @CharleneVdB

It sounds like you might be putting the needle into the loop below the first stitch instead of the loop around the needle that IS the first stitch.

  • i am doin the exact same as what your doing on the video but wen i finish my firs sticith it just makes the yarn wrap round it and when u let go it jsut falls out.....any suggestions y. :)

  • @weemegals

watch the video again. you must be doing something wrong in the beginning. do just what I do. keep at it and you'll get it and you'll be happy.

  • @knittingtipsbyjudy

    thank u .

  • slow down plz!!!! thumbs up if u agree

  • @catpaws991

sorry it was too fast for you. watch it over and over and you'll get it, if you haven't already.

  • @joanmccarthy10

thanks. please keep watching and look for me on facebook too.

  • So I've tried various videos teaching me how to purl... but no matter what I try, it looks EXACTLY like I'm doing the knit! What's wrong?

  • @mirage92

maybe you're looking at the wrong side. Purl is the back side of Knit. Keep trying. Look for me on facebook for more tips.

  • My grandmother taught me to crochet..I always wanted to learn knitting ...recently I went got my neddles and a book...uffff...I couldnt understand the book much...waste of money...your videos have helped me A LOT...I am knitting now... Thanks...from another Judy :-)

  • @jenellepr

I'm glad this grandmother named Judy was able to help you and I hope you'll enjoy knitting as I have, for years to come. Please keep watching and learning and look for me on facebook too.

  • Ooooh I have always wanted to know more knitting stitches, like I've said your vide make it seem EASY!! thanks goodness for Judy! I learnt to knit/crochet with my Grandma(she is/was a prolific crocheter) so I KNOW I am pleasing her to pick it up again and thanks to you I'm finding it's all coming back to me ... 30 years later lol! Thank you yet again xx

  • @MissFlux

thanks again. I know you're grandma would be proud.

  • I too am having trouble with the purl stitch. It's like the yarn is in the wrong place, and I can't get comfy. I've done 2 rows of 40 purls and they look good, but it was so awkward, nothing "zen" or calming about it at all. Practice makes perfect I guess

  • @espiritmaddy

it will get easier and eventually you'll be able to do it without even looking. then you'll think back to this time and be really proud of yourself. trust me.

  • Camera shakes a lot!

These are Amazing videos but, I dont understand the part AFTER you wrap the yarn around..HELP!

  • Learned how to Purl tonight, thanks to you!!

  • @BookerHall

yay. now you are a knitter! please keep watching and look for me on facebook too.

  • @Ethered45lc

glad it helped you. now you know! please keep watching. new video today

  • Ok I can knit , I can't purl for any thing, when I do try it looks just like purling! help.

  • @QueenIce69

watch my video over and over to see exactly how I do it. One side of your work should look like knitting (flat), the other side should look like purling (bumpy). That is the stockinette stitch. Keep at it. Practice makes perfect.

  • Judy! I LOVE your videos. I learned how to knit with you...and I just did my very first purl stitch. Thank you.

  • @antilluminatig

yay! glad to have you in the knitting world and glad my videos are helping. please keep watching and look for me on facebook too.

  • Ms. Judy, I am still a novice knitter and it's been a couple of years since I've knitted anything. Your videos are so helpful, concise, and the red yarn is a huge visual aid. Thank you so much... now I'm off to knit a scarf.

  • @8Wheelsor2

Thanks for the note. Glad you like the videos and that they are helping you get back into knitting. How did your scarf come out? Please keep watching and look for me on facebook too.

  • Can you make a video of how you hold the needles and actually knit (preferably a slow version of it). I always hold mine the way i saw in the very first video of knitting that i watched but you seem to hold it differently and do it much faster. :)

  • @obson90

I have a couple of videos where I talk about how I hold the needles and yarn, and give other tips. they are called knitting tips and e-mail questions answered. look for them on youtube and I think you'll find them helpful. Thanks for writing. Please keep watching and look for me on facebook.

  • I still don't understand how to do it.

I don't think this is possible for me.

Or I'm just doing something horribly wrong.

  • @spongefan19

Of course you CAN. Just keep watching and trying. Also, go to my web-site and click on basic stitches. It's written out there.

  • im getting stuck on how to take it if the needle

  • @ayastafa

do you mean you don't know how to bind it off? watch my video BIND OFF PURL. That explains it. Thanks.

  • My mother is very grateful for your help. She's just relearning to knit in her late fifties after last doing it in her teens. Thank you!

  • @pepperminttea42

I'm happy to hear your mom started knitting again. Tell her to keep watching and she'll remember everything she learned years ago.

  • I've been watching and reading how to purl in knitting and I seem to never understand it! This video has competely changed my perspective in learning new things in knitting! Thank you so much for making awsome videos!

  • @Smiliesrockmysox

I'm so glad my video helped you. Please keep watching. There's lots to learn.

  • Thanks so much for this. I have been trying to figure this out for hours. The only thing I would have liked to seen is what the stitch looks like coming back the other direction.

PS. I looked for you on facebook and couldn't find you. Maybe you should leave a link to your page in your profile here on youtube.

  • @chickyboodiva

thanks, I just added it to my youtube profile and here it is.. my facebook

  • I was about to comment saying that it wasn't working for me, and that the yarn kept slipping off of the right needle before I could pull the yarn through the stitch for some reason. Then I re-played the video and realized I had the yarn in the back instead of the front. Oopsie, hahaha.

Now I'm purling like a pro, thanks to your video. Thanks so much! :)

  • @kleptonica

so glad it worked out and glad you stuck with it to make it work! please keep watching and look for me on facebook too. thanks for writing me.

  • Thanks for this. It really really helped. I only learnt how to knit about a week ago and I didn't even think about learning new stitches, but you made this really easy. Thanks so much! :]

  • @Soytyzlover

Great! Keep watching and learning. There are lots more stitches. Happy knitting!

Look for me on Facebook too.

  • Wow! You are the ONLY one I could understand! Thank you sooo much! =D

  • @J9mojotiny

thanks! keep watching. lots of videos, lots to learn. happy knitting!

  • THANKS! :)

  • you're welcome. please keep watching. lots more video. happy knitting.

  • it the opposite of the knit stich

  • if you do stockinette stitch the knit stitch would be the right side and the purl would be the wrong side. the knit stitch is flat and the purl stitch is bumpy.

  • Thank you so much. :) This was helpful!

  • you're videos are so great thanks for the help

  • i cant do it but good vidio

  • yes you can. you need to keep at it. you'll get it eventually. do it!

  • Thanks judy!as ever fab video!you make the best knitting vids on here:)

  • thanks so much. I appreciate hearing that. Happy knitting.

  • Best video on the subject, thank you.

  • thanks for saying that. happy knitting!

  • Excellent clip. Purl stitch is a pain in that you have to "think" about it, whereas Garter or knit stitch is truly effortless! But the Purl stitch LOOKS so much better!! Thanks,

  • the more you knit, the easier it all is, including purl. keep at it and you'll agree.

    thanks for writing.

  • I agree! Like everything the more you do it the better! Only wish that would always apply to dieting!!!!! Wait I hear some chocolate calling my name!

  • Thank you so much, Judy! Have watched so many tutorials and have been pulling my hair out with frustration - 2 minutes into your video and am purling like an old pro! Thank you thank you. God bless you. x

  • GREAT! I wish you could help some of the others who are having such a hard time getting it.

  • Judy I feel a lot of stress in my right hand does that mean that when I knit should I practice Continental instead...I like Eastern Continental but there are not that many videos teaching that method

  • I don't know continental at all. Just relax into it and you should be fine.

  • i understand how to put the needle through, but when you have to pull it away and take the stitch off of the other needle, i get confused. do you anything to help?

    thanks!

  • Just pull it off and go to the next stitch on the needle. Keep practicing and I'm sure you'll get it.

  • Im so confused, Judy, I have been knitting for a year now and still havent learned how to purl because I am confused on when you bring your yarn around, and you catch a stitch and cast off. WHAT STITCH DO YOU CATCH AFTER YOU BRING YOUR YARN AROUND?!?!?!?!

  • You catch the next stitch on the needle. Keep watching my video and with practice I'm sure you'll get it.

  • can you mix purl and knit stitches? what kind of pattern should I use? Thanks Judy... very helpful!

  • everything listed in the other comments is correct. Also, ribbing. Check out all my videos to see different methods.

  • Thanks, Judy! That was probably the most helpful vid I've seen on how to purl. (Others seem rather fast or don't show everything that needs to be shown.)

    :)

  • that it very good inpresaive:)

  • THANKS!

  • This hepled me a lot with the purl stitch. I watched other videos on how to purl, but they weren't as clear as yours thank you Judy. :)

  • I'm so glad. Have fun knitting.......and purling!

  • I'm 16, and my mom taught me the European way of knitting which is sssssssssssooooooooooooooo much more faster and efficient!

  • Thank you i am 15 and just started knitting i had no idea how to change colors or knit a purl stitch until now thanks a lot!

  • Oh, I'm so happy to know I've taught a new knitter. Now you'll have something that you'll enjoy doing for life. It's addictive! Have fun with it and thanks for writing to me.

  • Thanks! I'm purling now! Yay!

  • Yay, indeed. Now you know how to do the stockinette stitch. If you're not sure, watch my stockinette stitch video.

  • cool. i remember how to knit that stitch now! =D

could only remember the regular stitch until now. thanks for posting video's!

  • Great, now you can do the stockinette stitch. Happy knitting!

  • ok, this is SO ANOYING! wanna learn how to stitch? why don't you start by teaching us HOW TO START!!!!! OMG, all the videos say the same thing! SOMEONE TEACH US HOW TO START THE PEARL STITCH!!!

  • look up how to cast on or how to knit

  • Thanks for this vid! I've just started knitting a scarf for my sister and I wanted to make it look interesting, so I decided to do a basket weave pattern (always used regular knit stitch before), then realized I didn't know how to purl!! What a frightful eejit I am. Anyway, I got it right first time after watching this, so thanks :D

  • One of the best purl instructionals here, thank you so much, now I can rib.

  • Thanks so much! I learned the knit stitch a long time ago from my a grand parent. I have been trying to figure out the purl from written instructions and other videos for hours. I just now realized what I was doing wrong, I was trying to knit backwards with success. :) i had to heat and see the "push the yarn away from you" part before it made sense. I love your other videos too.

  • i just re-learned to knit, forgotten since childhood but with an explanation yesterday and a video some minutes ago i seem to get the hang of it. but both back then and with my friend we dont put the yarn OVER like that, we just kinda pick it up with the needle, (schoolteacher called it "putting on the scarf") ,its easier to me too. It looks the same in the end, but maybe its not and will have some consequense? is the other way better or its just a variation of how to do it?

  • judy, when i purl, i end up making 2 more stitches than before.. why is this happening? the row before is shorter than the row after!

  • well, you're doing something wrong. Be sure to put the needle in the stitch and wrap the yarn around once. If you do that on every stitch you'll be o-k. You must be wrapping the yarn around twice or purling into the stitch twice somewhere. Watch my video and go slow.

    Good luck.

  • oh you are right! thank you judy!!

    :)

  • 0:38 I always have troubles doing the "pulling away" at 0:38, my left line would be so tight till it's hard to pull it off my left needle... I guess practice make perfect, I hope!

  • yes, practice does make perfect. I hope by now it's coming along easier. keep at it and try not to hold your yarn so tight. good luck.

  • make sure that you push your stitches on the lieft needle closer to the tip of the needle as you work along the rows , it oftne makes the knitting easier to pull off :)

  • Thank you for your video, I am trying to learn the purl stitch and having a hard time/with it, but watching your video you've made it so easy! - I will give it another try!! - thank you!! :)

  • Remember, practice makes perfect. Keep trying. Look for the new video I uploaded today. It's an easy, versitile stitch called Bamboo.

  • No sock video yet, but it's on the (long) list of suggestions so keep looking. thanks for your nice comment. Happy knitting!

  • Thanks for the demo!! I had no clue how to knit until i watched a video on here...now i want to try some "real" projects!!!!

  • glad I could help. keep knitting!

  • Thank you for your comment. Happy knitting!

  • Judy, thank you so much, but i am still having an issue. i am making a scarf and need to Purl 2 then Knit 2. Its not working i think i am putting my lose yarn on the worng side. thank you!

  • The yarn goes in the back for knitting, in the front for purling. Knit 2, bring the yarn in front. Purl 2, put the yarn in back. Good luck. Keep practicing and happy knitting!

  • oops ignore my other question. i forgot everyone uses thier left hand to hold the stitches. hahahaha so ya just forget about that question. thx

  • hey im a lefty. do i just keep the needle with the stitches in my left hand "like it always is" or do i have to move it into my right hand?

but the vid was very simple and clear. thank you

  • This is SO helpful! I've been wanting to learn how to purl for a while now, and my friend didn't really explain it clearly in a way that made sense. But I'm going to try this out now. Thanks for posting this video!

  • glad I could help. Keep practicing and you'll have it down in no time. Happy knitting!

  • most of the other purl stitch videos made by others makes me confused but this one sure helped me. Thank you, Judy.

  • thank you for your nice comment. glad I could help. Keep practicing. Hope you'll watch my other videos and happy knitting.

  • Every time I try purling, I end up making a normal knit stitch instead :(

  • i have the same problem...i need help too.

  • When you purl make sure you put the needle in the front of the stitch and make sure the yarn is also in the front. Keep practicing.

  • Make sure you put the needle in the front of the stitch and that the yarn is kept in the front. Keep practicing.

  • lol thanks! you just helped the first guy knitter in my family

  • Great! Keep knitting!

  • Youre a great grandmother! Your grandkids are lucky to have a grandma who can knit for them! =D

  • Thank you for your nice comment. Happy knitting!

  • Awesome! Thanks...great view of each stitch..and slow enough for me to understand. Easy instructions...thanks again.

  • sorry it took so long to get back to you. Thanks for the nice comment. Happy knitting!

  • Very clear instructions, thank you Judy!
