the ref is fuckin hilarious, he's all dramatic pointing at the floor and for some reason as he's doing that a voice pops into my head and says "COUNT IT BITCHES!!!!"
My dad tells me the story of how him and his friend ran across town to see this happen all the time. He said that everyone was going nuts (especially because I live in Phoenix). Greatest game ever? I think so.
My favorite part if you watch it again... When the shot goes up the Boston crowd is waiting to rush the floor. One fan dressed in yellow almost comes out on to the court, but then stops suddenly in shock when he sees Gar Heard's shot go in. Love it.
@ashland1977 still after 34 years they look like they were playing with kids.. jesus even kwame brown played with these guys he would atleast average 25 points and 18 rebounds.. atleast
For all that surrounded this play, including the fact that Havlicek had scored a basket and time had ran out erroneously, they had to take everyone out of the court and bring the celtics back again in, the technical by westphal for the inbound to be at center court, and the difficulty of the shot...for me this is #2 only beaten by MJ at Utah in 1998. This one is definitely the greatest game ever played.
I don't necessarily think that it implies that God is against the Celtics in a *malicious* way, but that simply in that moment in time, in that tiny second when Gar Heard caught the ball, turned around and shot it, his fingertips just happened to perfectly throw that ball into the hoop. All the quote implies is that miraculous things happen and they usually happens in someone's favor. That's what luck is, and some people equate that with a God's doing.
there is a God, but yeah i see your logic. That's why i don't think u should pray for your sports team to win, because i am sure someone on the opposing side is praying they will win also!!! so who does god reward? The team that plays the best!
THE NBA named this as the greatest game ever and i don't know why!!!!
but i agree this is the greatest game ever!!!! because it is an nba finals game 5!!!so when the phoenix wins there they will claim their first championship but the celtcis won it so they will head to game 6 then the celtics won the championship
@whateveritsnoyes It is Al McCcoy, he has done every Suns game on TV or radio since they became a franchise in 1968, and he is still active as of 2010
McCoy jinxed the Suns by saying "Somebody up there is on our side." Because the Suns went on to lose that game (barely) and eventually lose the series.
No. Just bad coaching decision on the part of Heinsohn. He had a foul to give. Heard shot it on the right side, his strong side. Some years later in Game 6 of the 1979 Western Conference finals against the Supersonics, down one, Lenny Wilkens forced him to shoot from the left.
i don't care if thats his good side. you cant always stop a good offensive player from running to his "good side" he forced him to shoot it over the top of him, so it wasnt that bad of defense. it was a little bit of luck.
During the 2nd OT, Nelson fouled Perry while trying to block his shot and got a three pt play. So, remembering that, he didn't go at Heard hard; But you don't let a guy catch, pivot and then shoot. C'mon. The play was supposed to go to Westphal but he was covered and went to Heard, instead.
wow do you play basketball? you can't physically stop someone from pivating...lol. he could have fouled him if thats what you were implying? but to me from a coach standpoint let him throw up a miracle shot. he would have missed that shot 9/10 times probably.
and just because he got a 4 point play doesnt mean he can hit a shot every time. tmac got that pt play in his 13 pt 33 second comeback but u dont c him doing that ever do u? the point is it wasnt the players or coaches fault.
No but Paul Silas is one. He said that Nelson should have grabbed him from the start with a foul to give. By that time, the clock would have expired. Remember, no millisecond at the time as well. I go with his theory than yours.
it's not my theory dude. lol. its called what actually happened? and if he would have fouled him he would have got a shooting foul cuz he was in the act of shooting. so i go with what actually happened. it's not my theory it's called the coaches decision....
wow are you that dense,,,when did i say i was on the floor? your trying to bash them for not playing good defense when you should be praising the man for a lucky shot. cmon now
even the ref got excited 0:12 i wish we still had nba games like this

"I gotta take a breather. Garfield Heard made the basket. I wanna tell you something. Somebody up there is on our side."
There's a poignancy to those words that I can't quite put my finger on. You can hear the disbelief and the jubilee in his voice.
Btw, does anyone know who that voice belongs to? Obviously someone announcing for the Suns but I'm not sure exactly who it is.

That would be HOF announcer Al McCoy. He is still the voice of the Suns today.
