  • I only arrived to world 4 here(toys island)

  • There was an alternate ending: When you collected all diamonds in the proper order (the colors of the rainbow!) in each level, you´ ll get a diamond from each boss. Collecting all diamonds will unlock the alternate ending!

To get the correct colored diamonds: It depends where you kill the enemies: If you kill them on the far left of the screen it will be the orange diamond. The further you go to the right, the brighter the colors will be! ;-)

  • I had this and another game i forget the name of in a double pack! The other game I can always remeber you were like a water blob and had to collect things and kill enemies in a dungeon crawler style way......anybody know what it might be? I played that game to death!!

  • 0oo00o0o00oo0

  • 0oo00o0

  • Where's the fun when you don't collect the magic items and don't destroy all enemies? Many items in this were fun. I completed it on my C64, but I think the bosses were much easier on the C64.

@KeredDrahcir: Back in the day, if I lost a life on one of the first three islands, I immediately threw a tantrum, turned off the computer, turned it on, started again. I accepted losing lives from the fourth island on. I always considered Robot Island to be the toughest.

  • In that case. That was amazing. Especially the way you tooling the Guardians.

I had a friend who could complete the first island with out losing a life.

He's the only person I ever saw complete but that was only with infinite lives. He'd spend ages on from the guardian on Toy Island up.

The Robot was almost impossible and the Dragon was easier.

Do you know what that object at the end of Doh's Island is?

  • Did you play this is God mode?

  • 1:11 DOUBLE RAINBOW ALL THE WAY

  • This was so hard!

  • I had the cracked version and i could play only the five islands... :(

  • @ALXD1974

Did you collect all the gmes in the correct order from left to right on Doh's Island? If so, you would have got into the secret room and got the continue book.

  • I love this game on its own merits, but also because when I play it, I see glimpses of how the world looked when I was 5. The bosses terrified me, but the game itself was great fun. I never did manage to collect the coloured gems in ROYGBIV order though. Also, I swear those beehives used to look like onions. Still do, actually.

  • amazing game. been playing it on the ps2 and its great although the amiga version is defo the best. incredible fun game

  • if you get all of the colored gems in every stage you can get to stage 8, the main boss there is a fish-like alien. something that looks like an arowana or something.

  • One of the best games ever. no question.

  • This is the bad final! The game in this way in NOT complete!

To complete real final collect all 7 diamonds and 3 mirror (and never found secrets island) ...

    See this ;)

  • The main tune from this game still gets stuck in my head from time to time. I think it mentally scarred me :-)

  • the game that sold quite a few hundred thousand amigas in the uk on the back of basically being called by the amiga press 'the greatest game of all time!'

I woudn't go that far but its definetly closer than 95% of what was released on the system

  • pause @ 00:26

    Puddi.

  • I'm stoned about your skills with the game!

I'm getting pretty good with it, but I still have nightmares about the Doh island and the Robots one... I reached the dragon boss only once...

One question if you please, in the amiga version does the game let you use continues from the Robots Island??

  • IT'S A DOUBLE RAINBOW! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN! A DOUBLE RAINBOW WO MAN! (if you have no idea what I'm joking about look up Double Rainbow)

  • 0:54

OH WOW, DOUBLE RAINBOW! OH MY GOD!

  • The thing I don't like about the Amiga version is the lack of a second button. They should have at least had an option for using a sega genesis controller. Because of this, I say the tg-cd version is the best (outside of the arcade).

  • Man, I loved this game as a kid! Played it all the time!

  • Double Rainbow all the way across! What does it meeeeeen!!! :D

  • The music never gets old

  • @matthewung

i just realized that the first part of the theme in the music is just like "somewhere over the rainbow"

Now it's clear, why i sing this melody my whole life. Respect to the musician! ;-)

  • easiest game ever.. geez, those bosses are a joke

  • Was this before or after Super Mario 3?

  • @hootyhaha Before

  • What was that happend if you collected all the diamonds??? Someone remember

  • The problem I have with this conversion is the fact that it has jerky scrolling, and thus feels like an Atari ST game. It also makes the most idiotic use of the copper (resetting it with the 68000 CPU), the copperlist is a real mess.

  • Good conversion

  • Pense na pessoa que vc goste, ponha a mão no coração e diga o nome dela 2 vezes.Mande essa mensagem para mais 2 videos e amanhã essa pessoa vai falar que gosta de vc

  • Man, i loved this game! Good times....

  • give p2 a turn!

otherwise this is a great video!

    ^_^

  • @rocksoliddude1 People who appreciate good games?

  • even though its repetitive, i still loved this game but didnt complete it because there was one boss i juss could not beat........

  • This vid is fucked! It wont let me watch from the beginning!!

  • Works here

  • It keeps putting me at 24:45 it's annoying...

  • Manually put the slider back

  • se non collezioni i diamanti questo gioco è così noioso...

  • Just one question to you, cubex55: When you made this Longplay, did you know then that you had to collect the Rainbow Stones to get to the true end?

  • Nope ;)

  • I think with all the Rainbow Stones you've got to collect here, they should have killed off the time limit in each level, 'cause without these Stones, you really don't get anywhere.

This was the meanest feature of this game.

  • wow. great skills...

I never was that good in playing this game...

    well done!

  • Rainbow Islands WiiWare & Xbox Live Arcade

doesn't retain the look of the arcade game

Taito Corp have screwed up porting both

Bubble Bobble Neo & Plus = better value

  • When i was really youg, i played this game at my cousin.

I also remember other game, but so bit about it...

Only thing i remember about it was "Blocky jumping bear boss with spiky ass" and awesome boss music...

  • Steve Turner from Graftgold said in the french magazine joystick that OCean never let them add a 3rd floppy disk for the 3 remaining islands (the game would have been 3 disks on atari ST and 2 on amiga instead of 2 and 1 respectively.

  • Taito should've made more Rainbow Island arcade games

  • They just remade it on the Xbox

  • You mean they just raped it on XBox :P

  • if you want to play it, in full version buy the ps2 taito legend n°1, (the amiga version is a short version only 7 levels),the full version : 10 levels , 7 and 3 hidden ones, if you collect all the diamonds , not like the dummy you play on this vidéo ! :p

  • One of the best games ever designed!

And really nice conversion for the Amiga!

Possibly the best game on the system.

  • WHWHWHWHAT THE

    This is a fantastic conversion!

It's nearly identical to the arcade version!

Frankly, that's mind-boggling, considering the Amiga's reputation for arcade ports...

  • Eventhough the game is finish after the 28 levels it's not completed. As stated in the end of this movie.

If you collect all 7 diamonds on all 7 islands you'll be giving access to 4 new islands and only if you complete those 4 islands also you'll have finished the game 100%.

How ever it's difficult enough just getting through with doing the diamonds also.

  • Does anyone else remember collecting the diamonds in the right order to activate some kind of bonus? It took a lot of skill to do but i can't remember what bonus you got :-D

  • Yes I do

You collect them in rainbow colour order (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, violet) and you got an extra life and a door would be in the boss room so you could skip the fight if you wanted. In the room would be a massive diamond that gave you a permanent power like double rainbows.

The screen was split into 7 vertical bands, and the band that the thing you killed fell into determined the colour (so red on the left side, then orange etc).

  • me and my mum used to sit there at nights playing it on the playstation along with bubble bobble, i was the only one who found it easy to get all the diamonds lol if it was the playstation version you got a colour diamond on each island i think you got only a life on the PS version though. nothing more lol. but to complete the game 100% you had to get a diamond on each island in order of the rainbow so like first island was red second orange e.c.t

  • Loved this game as a wee nipper!

Hmm... Is it weird that i'm feeling really hungry after watching this vid? O_o

  • The music is magic. I have it on my phone as ringtone.

The best game ever played in my life. Thanks you so much from my nostalgic heart. THANKS!!!

  • Looks like a good game, but I have one complaint: that music gets irritating after a while.

  • ow come on, its what brings the actual nostalgia about this game :P!

  • Actually, I have never heard of this game before today. I never owned an Amiga.

Thus, I have no Nostalgia Goggles to look at this game through.

  • The music is magic. I have it on my phone.

The best game I've ever played.

    Thanks for showing it again.

  • it's 'somewhere over the rainbow' haha.

  • this looks like the ps2 version to me. Still good though. I an hoping to complete this before I die.

  • Even thought is only just over 2/3 of a game, its still a great conversion.

  • Awesome game and great conversion.

1 of the best games made for Amiga ever. :D

And one of the best "sequels" ever in VG history.

Bubble Bobble and this are in the same league in history.

TBH, i liked this even more than BB though......:?

  • Clearly this is the best home port, I would say this even has better music than the arcade game!

  • This game is so cute! I love the little maggots. <3

  • I played this game when I was tiny! I never got to the end, though.

Damn, man, you're a gaming machine!

  • wow...

    god hand

  • Wow, awesome! You nailed all the tough spots perfectly! I always hated how some of the bosses were impossible to beat without three rainbows. But still one of my childhood's dearest platformers!

Doh Island was great homage; the sounds, graphics and enemies made you feel like you were actually playing Arkanoid even though it was totally different game! :D

  • Doesnt the first tune remind anyone of Somewhere Over the Rainbow?

  • no, this song be "what a wonderfull world" excreted by Louis Armstrong.

  • it does to me. the first part of the melody.. maybe they are connected?

  • Yes, you can hear it briefly. It's not a coincidence that the name of the game is RAINBOW Islands.

  • A demonstration of excellent skill! This game surely was a test of it. Broke me-I kept petering out by the time I got to Dracula. Just a nightmare game, with shit flying everywhere. And I can't get used to keep going upwards all the sodding time

  • lol 10)))))

  • Indeed WAZZA, the diamonds in order would be nice to see. This must have been a time-trial effort.

  • Think its brat

  • what is the name of the amiga game where you control a baby through various traps.

  • Brat? Chuck Rock 2? Baby Joe?

  • The nes game I had in the 80's he had BLACK HAIR....Can someone clear this up for me as to why he did.....???

  • Because the NES can only have 3 different colors per sprite, they had to reuse the color of the pants. The Amiga can have up to 15 colors per sprite or up to 63 colors for BOBs (in EHB mode)

BTW. look at the rainbows in the NES version(LOL)

  • looked at bit dodgy in parts, no lives lost. I think the collision detection was switched off for sprite to sprite, but not sprite to rainbow.

  • omg the person playing is UNBELIEVABLY good at this.. or well.. i suck.. i do.. but whatever thats damn good playing..!

  • Quanti ricordi!!

    Che bei giochi!

  • Can someone please do a walkthrough collecting all diamonds in order?

  • Dear God this brings back so many memories.

  • Well played (no deaths!).

This was one of my fave c64 games. I used to get the diamonds in the right order on world

    4. It gives you the wings which makes the rest of the game a doddle.

  • For some reason I never liked this game. As an ardent fan of platform games I found it terminally annoying how there were walls in the level design that served no purpose - i.e. you can walk right through them.

I know they're supposedly background but they're part of the platforms so look like they should be solid.

This gives the effect of incomplete physics.

Also, the gameplay seemed too repetitive.

  • I'm not very impressed. You didn't collect the diamonds, not even the bonuses...

    speed isn't everything.

  • is this europe version?

  • What a classic spent about half of my childhood on this, monster island was my favourite.

  • I loved this game, never completed it tho but i got to the last level i believe.

  • Well done!

  • hey thats pretty cool, but my sister cant get past the robot boss no matter what! can you please give me some hints

  • Ahh, great stuff! I love this game.

Well played - getting all the way to the end without dying once. However, it would have been nice to see this done properly: collecting all the coloured gems in order on every island. The person playing here obviously wanted to complete it quickly. And why doesn't s/he make more use of crumbling rainbows to kill enemies? Simply shooting them is cumbersome. Heh.. I used to play this too much! :)

  • Feel free to do a proper longplay - if you need any help om how to use an Amiga emulator and how to record games etc - feel free to ask us in our IRC channel - see profile for more info.

  • Oh, was it yourself who played this one? Cool. Well, I might just take you up on that challenge. I'll have to read up on how to do it on the PC however, as you suggest. Perhaps when I have some free time... I'll let you know if I do it. All the best.

  • Cool vid! Ah, this brings back so many good memories. 7 stars.

  • i used to be wicked at getting the crystals in order

i completed the game a few times without the cheat

although i had been out at warehouse party's all weekend...

  • Hey! For the playstation 1.... do you know any cheats for this game... I've looked it up online.. but it keeps giving me letters and I don't know what buttons on the controller are for what letters!

  • chikito juegazo primo. que tiempo aquellos

  • There are only the 7 islands in the Amiga version, Bastian1982.

  • Heheh that vampire boss is where I always died. The few times I got through it, I always died at the final boss at latest... Thanks for posting this vid, killed a skeleton from my closet. ;)

  • haven't seen this one in a very long time..

i still have my amigas but all the games are rusted..

  • Can anyone tell me wether the Commodore Amiga version had only the 7 islands or the three secret islands from the arcade version as well? Faerie Tale, Darius and Bubble island?

  • i know how to cheat that game

  • OK, the PSP version isn't that good. Obviously better graphics but gone is the old tune and there's no food or jewels to collect (only played a couple of rounds so far) but I;m not impressed :o(

  • ARGH! You just brought back repressed memories of the impossible level 3 vampire boss! seriously, thank you for posting this, i'm actually buzzing from the nostalgia :D

  • You're SO right! Unless I had a yellow potion and was shooting three rainbows the boss was nearly impossible! I often gave up unless I went that buffed up.

I did manage to kill it once or twice with just a rainbow but it was SOOOOO incredibly hard. Only the bosses from Dragon or Robot islands were harder.

  • Yeah i could always get to that vampire dude, but he was way too strong. I never beat him. Well done!

  • I made it to the toy island (4th level, so to speak), past the vampire. But then my disk always broke down because of some bug. Grrrr.

  • What bug? I haven't even got past the vampire, but I only know the spider from the first world. What kind of bug is it?

  • I mean a software bug, not an insectoid.

  • I remember getting the same problem once, at the exact same moment. The game glitched/froze and I had to reboot. :\

    Still, great game.

  • Wow, this was one of my fave Amiga games ever... I remember the panic when the big spider came on LOL. I actually just ordered Rainbow Islands Revolutions for the PSP from the net yesterday, can't wait for it to arrive although I know if will be quite different.

  • this was my first game to buy on my A2000 ... i LOVE this video :)

  • Amazing game!!

  • ahh so many sleepless nights...

  • ah, ye olde Taito. i've seen screenies of the best ending somewhere. I've still got to beat Bubble Bobble one day. i've gotten up to level 76

  • Those were the bloody days!

  • I never understood how you are able to play these computer games without getting carpal tunnel...

  • Cool. My first computer game! Thank you for putting it on the internet. I never got past the island with the vampire-guardian. Now finally I see the ending :p

  • wow this is great!! I've never seen all of the islands, and I always lose at the 2nd island :p

  • WoW the Amiga graphics were cool at those times!! This version is similar to the Arcade one.

  • aaw, no diamonds:/

  • I'll have to fire up the Amiga sometime, it's been awhile since I last played this version of RI.

  • Well not an Amiga, but an emulator for one, perhaps in the future this person can do a long play of Parasol Stars.

  • YES.

Parasol Stars is my most favourite game of all time. That, Rainbow Islands and New Zealand Story were my childhood games!

  • Said emu doesn't take up too many MBs, does it? And do you still have to play on a keyboard?

  • Only the arcade version has all three hidden islands available if you collect all the diamonds in each island. Collecting them in order isin't essential but gets permanent power-ups at the end of each island (if you enter the door that appears in the boss room).

  • Yet in every other version all you have to do is collect seven little diamonds from each world, they don't really have to be in order to access the hidden island, they do have to be in order, in order to get the permanent power up silver door to appear in the boss room, that is in turn harder to do.

  • Great game! You should collect the diamonds in order, according to the colors in the rainbow (red first and purple last). This will enable "special gifts" from the treasure chests, when killing the bosses on every island. This is also the only way to unlock the last hidden, Island.

  • Yup, great game. There is no hidden island in this conversion. 7 islands only. Glitchy 'placeholder' graphics for 8, 9 and 10 can be seen if you have an Action Replay though.

There's one item in this version that isn't in the arcade game, The Graftgold Key (named after the programming co.) It turns on a starfield background, which you can only see on Monster Island! :-)

  • Seeing you miss all those diamonds makes me cringe a bit, I thought you were going to try to get the diamonds at least.

  • The only way to unlock the hidden island is to collect the diamonds in order according to the colors in the rainbow. This has to be done on every island, not an easy task! The big diamonds will appear from the treasure chests when killing the island bosses.
